Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Dark Skeleton (Support Please!)

The moment he equipped the Eye of Insight, streaks of faint light flashed through the depths of Gu Ran's pupils, which after a few seconds, returned to normal.

When he opened his eyes again, Gu Ran suddenly froze in place. His vision, which had become somewhat blurry due to his addiction to electronic products, became incredibly sharp in an instant, as if the turbid water had suddenly become crystal clear.

That feeling, to exaggerate a bit, was as if he had been reborn at that moment, and it was simply beyond description.

With intense excitement, Gu Ran's gaze shifted. After equipping the "Eye of Insight" card, he first set his sights on the skeletal creatures outside the window on the street.

Compared to the gray-green monster he had just killed, which he had already learned was called a "Goblin" during the card selection process, he was now more interested in knowing about these creatures resembling undead skeletons.

After all, these skeletons gave off a much stronger sense of oppression than the Goblin.

As his gaze rested on one of the skeletal creatures, information soon surfaced in his eyes.

[Name: Dark Skeleton (Common)]

[Race: Undead]

[Level: 2]

[Weapon: Bone Longspear]

[Skill: Battle Sweep]

[Feature: Possesses a Skeleton Body, immune to physical damage to a large extent, fears holy light attacks.]

...…

Looking at the attribute panel in front of him, Gu Ran fell into silence.

Clearly, this Dark Skeleton was currently beyond his ability to handle.

After much consideration, he decided to wait until he had cleaned out all the floors in the residential building and at least leveled himself up before considering the Dark Skeleton again, as his chances of victory would likely increase significantly by that time.

According to his own attribute panel, he was still at level 0, not even reaching level 1 yet. And based on the physical enhancement gained after awakening from a Common human, it wasn't hard to guess that each level up would likely include a physical enhancement.

Without aiming for the same level as the Dark Skeleton, just one more advancement from level 0 to level 1 would give him an eighty percent confidence in a one-on-one kill.

...…

As various thoughts flooded his mind, a strong sense of hunger from his stomach suddenly pulled Gu Ran back to reality.

"Didn't I just eat a large piece of bread a little while ago? Why am I hungry again so soon?"

Confused, but quick in action, Gu Ran swiftly headed to the kitchen. He planned to reward himself with a box of instant noodles, um... and add a sausage.

Fortunately, there was still power in the house; otherwise, he really wouldn't know how to get hot water, since in Gu Ran's house, the kitchen had always been just for decoration, not to even think about using the gas stove.

Of course, Gu Ran was well aware that this was only temporary. With the rampage of countless monsters, the whole city had already descended into chaos, and a complete power outage would just be a matter of time, if not tonight, then at the latest, tomorrow.

By then, finding a hot meal would become very difficult.

He boiled water, soaked a packet of the classic explosive chili instant noodles, and found a thermos from a corner, not knowing when he had bought it. After cleaning it, he filled it up, not sure if it was still usable, but what if?

Having filled his stomach, he chose not to go out again. The light outside had already begun to dim, and night was about to fall; venturing out at this time was not a wise decision.

After some thought, Gu Ran stacked the two cabinets in the living room right up against the front door. Arranged neatly, one on top of another, they effectively sealed off the entire entrance. He could imagine that if any monsters were to charge from outside, they would find it very hard to break through.

It did seem a bit exaggerated, but with the world-changing anomalies that previously would have been unimaginable now happening, Gu Ran couldn't help but be cautious. He knew all too well that if something unexpected did happen, it would be too late for regrets then.

As time ticked away, night had fallen. He didn't even dare to turn on the lights. In the deepening darkness, the constant roars of various monsters intermingled, like a deep abyss's gaping maw slowly opening, ready to choose its next victim.

In the residential building facing him, someone was screaming. That person's nerves must have been thick; with such world-changing anomalies happening outside, they dared to brazenly turn on the lights at night.

Gu Ran noticed that the moment the light in their room turned on, all kinds of monsters on the street below seemed to receive a signal and charged into that residential building en masse. What followed was the scene unfolding before his eyes.

Because of this, Gu Ran inwardly congratulated the residents of his building. At least the fool wasn't among them. Otherwise, if too many monsters poured in, his hunting plans for the next day would be in jeopardy.

He remained at the window for quite some time, when suddenly everything went dark—the lights all around went off at that moment. Not sensing anything unusual, Gu Ran knew the whole city had lost power.

Returning to the living room and sitting down on the sofa, he placed the mechanical compound bow and quiver by his side to ensure he could reach them immediately if an emergency occurred. He then reopened his personal attribute panel to take another look.

This way, the night passed without incident.

The next morning, Gu Ran awoke early. Although nothing dangerous had happened the previous night, he had been startled awake once.

Around two in the morning, there came a loud banging on the door from next door. It was unclear whether it was bad luck or some noise made by the neighbor in their sleep, but in any case, after attracting the attention of the monsters that battered the door, it did not take long for Gu Ran to hear the sound of the door being broken down and the blood-curdling screams that ensued.

Regarding this, Gu Ran's expression did not change much; he had nothing to say about his neighbor's fate.

When he ventured out earlier the previous day, the first place he checked was his own floor and naturally discovered that apart from himself, there was another lucky survivor on the third floor.

He had kindly invited them to move into his home so they could live together, clearly stating that it would be safer; after all, there is strength in numbers.

However, what he got in return was an immediate rejection from the other person, who didn't even open their door during the conversation.

Gu Ran could understand this type of reaction. In a world where anomalies reigned and Jiang City's order had collapsed with no law to speak of, it was normal to be wary of strangers.

But likewise, since one couldn't trust others, they should be prepared to face danger alone. If they were killed by monsters, they had no one else to blame.

After hastily eating some food and checking his mechanical bow several times, in case of the worst, he also took a large fruit knife and tucked it into his waistband.

Once certain everything was ready, Gu Ran moved the cabinets away from the door and once again stepped out.

His plan for the day was simple: ensure his own safety and kill as many monsters as possible, while also collecting supplies.

Of course, the most important task was to see if he could get his hands on another new Miracle Card. In the grand scheme of a world anomaly, one's own solid strength was ultimately the only truth.
