The janitor's words left the Judge speechless; indeed, the matters of the Mortal World were not for him to handle. Without rules, there can be no square nor circle; everything in the world had laws: the Sky Deities were bound by heavenly laws; the Mortal World was bound by laws; and the Underworld was governed by its own netherworld regulations. A Netherworld Judge managing affairs of the Mortal Realm was overstepping bounds, not only breaching the netherworld regulations but also violating the heavenly laws.
The Judge opened his mouth, wanting to say something more, but no words came out. Helplessly, he glanced at me and then shook his head quietly to himself.
As a Judge, he certainly knew that his actions were not in accordance with the law. However, for the sake of repaying a debt of gratitude to me, he knowingly broke the law, and this deeply moved me. It seemed I could not always rely on him for help; who knows, one day I might actually bring him trouble.
