The woman in white had barely finished speaking when the two, who had been struggling to shift the blame onto each other, were now warily eyeing each other, as though both were anticipating the other might go and pick up the rusty old kitchen knife from the ground.
Watching their actions, I couldn't help feeling a bit surprised. Just moments ago, they were both trying to deny responsibility, each wanting to be the one left unharmed by the woman in white, but now that the opportunity had arisen, why were both hesitating simultaneously? Could it be that all of their prior actions had been an act for the woman in white's benefit? This seemed unlikely since they had been fighting fiercely, with the sounds of scuffling loud and clear and the man's face also scratched up with many bloody marks.
'Don't hit the face' is a common saying, and if they had been acting, they should not have targeted the face. Or maybe they did it to make the act look more convincing?
