Chapter 173 - Chapter 172: The Council of the Ancients

The first light of dawn crept through the trees, casting long shadows across the grove where Lilith and Elian had set up camp. The fire had burned down to embers, and a cool breeze swept through the forest, carrying the fresh scent of pine and earth. Lilith stirred, blinking against the early morning light as the weight of their journey settled back into her consciousness.

She hadn't slept well—her dreams had been filled with shadows, voices whispering from the abyss they had just sealed. The entity's warning still echoed in her mind, and though they had temporarily stopped the darkness, she knew it was only a matter of time before it tried to break free again.

Elian was already awake, sitting by the remains of the fire and sharpening his sword. He looked up as Lilith sat up, his expression grim but steady. "You ready for what comes next?" he asked, though his tone suggested he already knew her answer.

Lilith nodded, brushing her hair out of her face. "I don't think we have a choice. We need answers, and Oryn's the only one who might be able to help us understand what's really going on with the ley lines."

Elian sheathed his sword, standing and offering her a hand to pull her to her feet. "Then let's get moving. The sooner we find Oryn, the sooner we can figure out what we're up against."

They packed up their camp quickly, the ease of their movements a testament to how accustomed they had become to this life of constant travel and battle. Lilith strapped her sword to her side and adjusted her pack, feeling the familiar pulse of the ley lines beneath her feet as they began their journey back to Aelmir.

The road ahead was long, but the landscape slowly softened as they left the oppressive darkness of the mountains behind. Rolling hills and thick forests spread out before them, bathed in the soft light of morning. Yet despite the beauty of the world around them, Lilith couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking toward something far more dangerous than they had ever faced.

By the time they reached Aelmir, the village was bustling with activity. The villagers went about their daily tasks, unaware of the battles that had been fought on their behalf, unaware of the ancient entity that still lurked in the depths of the land. The familiar sight of Oryn's small, weathered cottage brought a sense of calm to Lilith, though it was tinged with the urgency of their mission.

They approached the door and knocked, the sound echoing faintly. Moments later, Oryn opened the door, his sharp eyes widening slightly in surprise when he saw them.

"Back so soon?" he asked, though there was no humor in his voice. He could sense the weight they carried, the tension that hung between them like a storm cloud.

Lilith didn't waste any time.

"We need answers, Oryn. We faced something in the heart of the ley lines—something ancient and powerful. It wasn't just a force of darkness. It was… alive."

Oryn's expression darkened, and he stepped aside, motioning for them to enter.

"Come inside. We have much to discuss."

The small cottage was as cluttered and cozy as ever, filled with books, scrolls, and artifacts from Oryn's years of research into the ley lines. The air smelled faintly of herbs and parchment, a scent that reminded Lilith of quieter days before their journey had taken such a dangerous turn.

Oryn sat down at his small table, his gaze sharp and focused.

"Tell me everything."

Lilith and Elian recounted the events of the past few days—the battle with the shadowy figure, the discovery of the entity in the abyss, and Lilith's growing understanding that the ley lines weren't just a source of power, but a battleground between light and dark forces.

When they finished, Oryn was silent for a long moment, his expression unreadable as he processed their words.

"The entity you encountered," Oryn began slowly, his voice low and thoughtful, "is not just a force of darkness. It is what the ancients called a Primordial—a being born from the very fabric of creation. The ley lines are not just channels of energy; they are the veins of the world, connecting everything. The Primordials are the guardians of that balance, but they are not all aligned with light. Some, like the one you faced, are agents of chaos and destruction."

Lilith's heart raced at his words.

"So, the ley lines themselves aren't just a source of life—they're also a conduit for destruction?"

Oryn nodded gravely. "Yes. The ley lines carry both creation and destruction, light and dark. That is their nature. For as long as they have existed, there has been a delicate balance between these forces. But over time, as the seals have weakened, the dark Primordials have grown stronger, feeding on the ley lines' energy."

Elian frowned, leaning forward. "If the ley lines are a conduit for both forces, then how do we stop the dark Primordials from feeding off them? How do we stop this from happening again?"

Oryn looked at them with a seriousness that sent a chill through the room. "You can't stop it, not entirely. The ley lines will always carry both light and dark. But there is a way to restore the balance."

Lilith's pulse quickened. "How?"

Oryn stood and crossed the room, pulling an ancient, weathered scroll from one of the shelves. He spread it across the table, revealing intricate diagrams and symbols that depicted the ley lines, the seals, and the Primordials. In the center of the diagram was a place Lilith had never seen before—a massive convergence of ley lines.

"This," Oryn said, pointing to the center, "is the Confluence—a place where all of the ley lines in the world meet. It is the heart of the ley lines, and it is where the Primordials were first sealed. If you want to stop the dark forces from feeding on the ley lines, you must go there."

Lilith stared at the map, her mind racing. The Confluence—it was the source of everything. If they could reach it, they might be able to restore the balance, to stop the dark Primordials from consuming the ley lines. But the journey to the Confluence would be dangerous, and the Primordials wouldn't let them reach it without a fight.

"How do we get there?"

Elian asked, his voice filled with determination.

Oryn looked at them both, his expression grave. "The Confluence is hidden deep beneath the world, protected by ancient magic and guarded by the Primordials themselves. It is a place few have ever seen, and fewer still have survived. But if you can find the entrance to the Confluence, you may have a chance to restore the balance."

Lilith felt a surge of determination. They had come this far, faced so many dangers. The Confluence was their only hope to stop the darkness from consuming the ley lines entirely.

"We'll find it," Lilith said, her voice firm.

"We'll restore the balance."

Oryn nodded, though there was a sadness in his eyes. "The path ahead will be unlike anything you've faced before. The Primordials are ancient, powerful beings, and they will not give up the Confluence without a fight."

Elian placed a reassuring hand on Lilith's shoulder, his voice steady.

"We're ready."

Lilith met Oryn's gaze, her resolve solidified. The Confluence was the key to everything—the heart of the ley lines, the place where light and dark were born. If they could reach it, they could stop the dark Primordials once and for all.

But the journey ahead would be the most dangerous one yet.
