I used 'swarm' instead of 'horde' as it sounded more suited for slimes.

A swarm. A term used to define a collection of ants. Of course, it could be used for other things as well but it fits best for ants.
However, in this situation, what I see before me, I can't say 'A lot of slimes' because they aren't only a lot, they are a lot, lot, and lot. So the best word to use would be swarm.
The shield was entirely covered by slimes. Oh yes. Not surrounded but covered. There were so many of them that they not only surrounded the whole shield, they were even covering all of it, not letting a speck of light in.
I could only see them after my eyes adjusted to the dark a little. At first, it only appeared as if the room was dark but I realized soon that it wasn't that the room was dark, there were just slimes blocking the incoming light.
I can't even count them, that's how many they are.
