Synopsis
The chair swung back and forth, with each swing a crack sounding through. The figure in the chair stared outside his window, where only darkness could be seen, and whispered softly: ‘There was once a ravenous creature that stood powerful, dominating all and immortal for as long as it stayed inside its prison. The cold and silent walls of the prison reached as far as the eye could see, icy cold to the touch and impossible to climb. ‘One day the creature saw his prison crumble, making it possible to escape. However, it remained inside.’ Then the figure turned and stared across it with unmoving eyes. ‘Why is that?’

Chapter 1 - Angel

Inside the Temple of Sky, a boy kneeled with his hands clasped in prayer.

'Being of the Nights and Days, bring us freedom

'Forgive our forefathers and the evils of the Day

'Here in Stone, we beseech you to set us free from the horrors of the world

'We bless you and plead for you to set us free

The boy looked up and cold tears could be seen in his eyes.

In a voice so quiet it could hardly be heard, he whispered:

'Forgive us

He stood up, his limbs seeming to creak with every movement, and raised a hand to brush away his tears. However, they had already frozen over, and he felt chips of ice fall away from his hands.

The distant ringing of a bell sounded and the boy glanced at the stone tapestries carved crudely onto the inner walls of the temple, then rushed away with surprising speed for someone who was so frail.

—————

'Night of Sky, Day of Sky, Stone of Sky, Orion of Sky, Angel of Sky.' The monotonous voice of the caretaker read out the names, then looked at the huge screen that hung behind him. 'Those are all.'

Angel felt slightly melancholy at the calling. Once there had been twenty-four of them, and now only five were left. The twins, Night and Day stood at the very left of the line, looking especially beautiful for those who belonged to Sky with their healthy skin and bright blue eyes. It was a wonder that they hadn't been chosen yet, although Angel knew why, having overheard in a conversation.

Next in line stood Stone, with piercing grey eyes and grey hair.

Orion stood after her, with black hair pulled back in a ponytail and inky black eyes that hid all emotion.

Angel himself was pale, not as pale as Orion or Stone, with blond hair so pale it looked white. His eyes, however, were black with a blue rim inside.

There was a silence that seemed to wrap around the cathedral, and then the caretaker spoke out: 'Night of Sky, Day of Sky, Stone of Sky, Orion of Sky.'

The four were soon whisked away from their spots on the cold stone floor, leaving Angel standing alone.

He looked up and saw the caretaker now loom over him, complete indifference on his face. 'Walk,'he commanded coldly, pointing at the exit of the stone cathedral.

Angel looked up and saw no pity in those cold eyes of the caretaker, so he walked to the exit and left.
