Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9

Narrator's POV

Jodie and Lisa were returning to Alpine's room when they were stopped by June accompanied by Lisa's mate. The two nurses having learned of June's earlier visit to their patient's room did not want to indulge her.

They looked at each other and after having their silent conversation, they decided to play dumb. They needed to know her real reasons for visiting even if it means playing a spy game on her.

They knew it was bad to do that to their friend but still, they chose to do it because it involved an innocent girl and their possible future Luna and Queen.

On the other hand, Jodie took it personally. She didn't quite trust the people who surrounded her now more than ever. She feared they each had their own hidden agendas. She vowed to speak with their Alpha regarding the matter at a later date.

Looking towards June, Jodie wondered how far she was willing to go just to be the alpha's mate. Was status more important than happiness?

Greetings were passed around and they all caught up like they normally did every time they met.

"Hey, where are you two headed off to, I hope none of you are sick," Jodie chose to ask after a moment of prolonged silence.

Although Lisa's mate presence wasn't that questionable, June's presence was. She didn't have any business being in the hospital especially more than twice per day.

"Your mate wanted to see you and I chose to accompany him here," June answered addressing Lisa.

In truth, she was already by the hospital snooping around when she saw him coming. She chose the moment and used it to wade off the suspicion that she has been around since her morning visit.

The man looked at him weirdly but chose to remain silent. He wondered why June chose to lie but filed the question for further investigations later.

"Cayden, although am happy to see you, we are swamped with work and so I can't stay long for a chat I hope you understand my love," Lisa said gently.

She was actually thrilled to see her mate but was bummed because of work. She was just glad that Cayden was such an understanding mate. Cayden knew his mate was a busy woman that's why he chose to come by himself to deliver the news than using a mind link or making a call.

"Oh No, am not here to chat, I just came by to inform you that your aunt will be arriving in the next one hour," he informed her, "she said that it was time, you know how cryptic she can be. Half the time I never understood her, even when growing up," he added.

Indeed it was true, growing up, Cayden never understood half the things Lisa's aunt said. Back then, being the Luna, she had so many secrets that even her mate knew nothing about.

Lisa has seen her aunt only once in the past four years that she has been mated to Cayden. That was during her uncle's burial, he was mated to Luna Serenity but passed away due to severe injuries during a rogue attack.

After the burial, Serenity disappeared but not before leaving a cryptic message behind," I'll only be back when the time is right."

From there on, no one knew her whereabouts or a way to get in touch with her, not even her children.

They all knew that she blamed herself for the disappearance of Alpine. No one was able to convince her otherwise.

Apart from Cayden, she was also the one who mourned her assumed death the longest. Most people still think that she was still grieving and they chose to let her be.

Back in Dark forest pack, no one understood why she took the news harder than most. According to them, Alpine was just some ordinary, insignificant human girl who most people thought her disappearance was good riddance.

Lisa wondered about her sudden appearance, was the time right? After all it's been four years of zero communication. Why come back now?

Although June was curious, she wasn't much invested in it. All she needed to find out was if Jane Doe was awake and if she recognized her presence in the room.

She was anxious to say the least. She had gone with the intentions of injecting the girl with the serum given to her by the dark witch but she failed. The girl had freaked her out which made her drop the serum. She had no choice but to rush out forgetting to pick it up.

"Did she say why she was visiting so suddenly" Lisa asked interrupting June's inner musing.

"No, she just said to tell you it was time, before the call was dropped. You of all people know how she is. She is known to give out an indirect answer." Cayden answered.

"That's alright then, I'll keep an eye on the time then I'll meet up with her when she arrives," she answered.

What more could she do, her aunt was coming for a visit after four years of radio silence. To Lisa, questioning her wasn't the right thing to do. She just needed to see her favorite aunt, spend some quality time with her catching up. She wasn't asking too much was she?

Seeing that he had done what brought him over, Cayden chose to leave. Just when he had turned around, June's question made him stop on his tracks.

"Jodie, how's Jane Doe doing today any improvement?"

To someone else, they would see June's question as that of a concerned friend but to Lisa and Jodie, it sounded suspicious.

The two chose not to show any reaction to her question. The question had Cayden's curiosity piqued.

He also wanted to know the progress of the patient. Since meeting her in the hospital, Cayden has been restless. His wolf Knight wasn't helping either.

Knight kept insisting that the girl was their sister but Cayden wasn't buying it. How could he? It had been eight years since that fateful night Light Moon pack that he lost someone dear to him.

Since that particular day, he has not spoken or seen his family. After got the news, he left home and joined the Hybrid pack cutting off ties with his family.

Later on he met his mate Lisa, Luna Serenity's niece and proceeded to join the warriors where he has been to date.

"Um,, Jane is rec….." Jodie went to answer only to be interrupted by a frantic nurse.

"Nurse Jodie, the patient is missing," she shouted in fear.

"What do you mean? Who is missing?" Asked a surprised Jodie.

"Jane Doe, she is missing. I went to administer her medication as you instructed only to find an empty bed. I checked everywhere and she is nowhere to be seen," she answered in a rush.

Jodie was in shock, where could she be? Who took her? How? when?

Both Lisa and Cayden were surprised too. Despair engulfed Cayden as he felt his heart breaking all over again. He was confused by his own feelings but chose not to dwell on it and focus on what was happening.

Lost in their own thoughts and fear, the trio failed to see the triumphant smirk on June's face.

Was June really behind the disappearance or was she happy for a different reason.
