The clang of metal on metal echoed through the refuge as Sebastian brought the hammer down upon the glowing blade, shaping it with each strike. Sparks flew, illuminating his grinning face with each hammering.
Nearby, Richard observed his new apprentice's work with a critical eye. "Keep your arm steady," he said. "One wrong move and you'll ruin the balance."
Sebastian's grin widened despite the harsh instruction. He adjusted his grip, keeping his arm firm as he continued to hammer away.
"Now, quench it," Richard said. "But carefully. Too fast, and the blade will crack."
Sebastian plunged the glowing metal into the waiting trough of water. Steam hissed and billowed around him, but he paid it no mind, his eyes fixed on the sword taking shape before him.
"Good," Richard said, a hint of approval in his gruff voice. "You're learning fast. Faster than most."
