"Shitty, so shitty."Â
Teng Liu kept repeating the phrase over and over. She was pacing back and forth in the middle of a luxurious bedroom, silk draping down to veil various lengths of the room.
Some may have welcomed transmigration with open arms, but Liu was not such a person. She had been working hard to live her life independently, and, even with such effort, she was suddenly whisked into another world entirely.
She wanted to grab whatever divine being made this happen and beat some sense into them! She ran her slender hand through her silk-like hair, trying and failing to calm herself.Â
Of all characters as well, it had to be the trash with her same name. She supposed in this day and age, asking to be the heroine was too much, but she hadn't asked for anything at all. Teng Liu in the novel she had read was the most minor of minor characters. She was a woman, married off to a minor antagonist of the novel so as to hinder him. She was quite literally a human demerit, a weight attached to the minor characters heels. Even just thinking about it made her shudder with rage, her breath coming out in a shaky exhale.Â
She had spent so much time and effort working to improve herself, to stand on her own feet. Now, she was being sent off with the idea that she would be so lazy, so greedy, and so unvirtuous that it would drag her unwitting husband down.Â
And what a husband he would be! A character who was the outcast of his family, a known playboy and jealous fool, whose only redeeming qualities were his looks, and his martial talent.Â
That was just one more thing increasing her rage. It couldn't have been a novel in the modern world? Instead, she was trapped in a world of insane fools who threw themselves into swirling whirlpools, caves of endless lightning bolts, and volcanoes, all to "Cultivate power."
The beautiful silks draping over her body rustled unpleasantly as she clenched her fist around her arm, pulling on the soft material. She took deep breaths, trying to calm herself down from making a mistake.Â
Cultivators, spirit beasts, earth shaking calamities, and all sorts of other unique ways she could die in this land. To finally put a nice bow on her present of sheer misery, the body she had inherited had been one incapable of cultivation. So, she quite literally couldn't gain the power to stand on her own two feet.
Due to this, she was considered a failure by her parents, and used in such a marriage. Were the two of them not cultivators that could kill her in a flick, Liu would've strangled them. "So shitty!"Â
Finally, her rage boiled over, and she slammed her fist into the wall. She took another shuddering breath, letting the emotion pool over her like the waves of the ocean.Â
"Have I perhaps come at a poor time?"Â
A man stood, his eyebrow cocked in what looked like amusement. He was dressed in similar finery as her, the traditional marriage garb of the world. He had a look of annoyance suppressed by a grin. His closed eyes made him look almost serene, his face a pleasing mixture of refined and rugged. He had short cut black hair, and when open, his eyes were a kind brown.Â
Of course, all of these features were wasted on a playboy like him, who cared only for indulging himself.Â
"Yes, in fact, all times are poor for seeing you."Â
"I'm already agreeing with my wife, how wonderful."
Irritation from both seemed to physically flood the room, and the servant who escorted Liu's husband felt sweat bead down their face. The young man coughed, bowed, then left, sliding the door closed behind him.Â
"What does my wife even have to complain about? I'm the one being dealt the short hand." The cocky bastard jumped onto the finely decorated bed, letting out a sigh. "If I give you what you ask for, I indulge my mortal pet too much, If I-"
Liu immediately walked and stood above him, her eyes dark and full of rage. "Call me a pet again, and I will spit into every cup of tea I am forced to serve to you."
The man sputtered, an astonished look on his face. "You…"Â
Liu scowled, leaning down. "I dare." He blinked at her, unable to respond. She snorted, standing back up straight. "This is how this is going to go. We will sit in this room in silence, and once freed, will never speak to each other again."Â
"Oh? And, how exactly do you intend to manage on your own, without your very attractive and generous husband's support?"Â
She looked down at him with eyes full of disgust. "To call yourself those things…" She shook her head at his sheer arrogance. "I will manage, however, to be used like a poison needle to drag someone down…" She was unable to properly articulate her feelings, and instead simply slammed her fist into the wall again, letting out another angry breath.Â
"Ohoho? It appears my little wifey is a prideful beast as well~"Â
"Spit. In your tea."Â
He stuck his tongue out towards her immaturely. He rolled over on the bed with a huff, resting his head in his hands as he glared upside down in her direction. "Unfortunately, it would reflect poorly on your husband if you were to starve in the streets."Â
"That hardly seems like my problem."Â
He let out one small huff, amusement in his voice. "They never told me you were such a dignified and graceful speaker." She raised an eyebrow at him with an unamused expression, and he raised a hand in the air, gesturing dramatically. "Your crude and harsh words are like the flowers which sway with the breeze."
"And your condescending and arrogant tone is as high as a valley and as deep as a mountain."Â
"You mixed those up."Â
"Did I?"Â
He smiled again, forcing himself to sit up. "Well, If we both detest this arrangement so much, I propose…a truce."Â
"Oh? I'm listening."Â
He gestured towards himself. "I hate the idea of having to provide for you." He pointed to her, "You hate the idea of me providing for you, yes?"Â
"Very much so, yes."Â
"So, I shall grant you, from my mighty reserves, a small enough sum that you will not immediately starve to death."Â
"How generous."Â
"I know." Liu bit her tongue from insulting the cheeky brat further. "Furthermore, as I practically never use it, you may live in the materials storehouse the Sect entrusted to me."
The husband of Liu, Guo Gang, smirked at his new wife. The offer was insulting to a lady of her standing, even with their shared detestment. In truth, he meant it as another barb, a verbal insult and nothing else. She would refute him, and he would, in his mind, noblely allow her to stay in the large home he had, in a guest room far away from him.
"Very well."Â
He raised his head in the air, ready to scoff and give in to her demand before stopping. His brows knit together. "Very well?"Â
The woman looked scornfully at him once more. "Tsk. Brat, do you not intend to respect your own offer? The storeroom is mine."Â
"To sleep in, the materials ar-"
"Are under the Sect's control, I am aware."Â
Gang frowned. This woman was…far from what he had imagined. Marrying her was a blow to him, for he was wedding a mortal with no ability to cultivate. Furthermore, if he indulged in actual pleasures, he was unfaithful, yet if he was to indulge in her, he was wasting time with a mortal. Not only did this curb his ability to wed a woman of actual standing, the woman in question was said to be a demanding and needy thing, always requiring the heights of luxury to not throw tantrums.Â
Such a woman was bickering with him over if she would be allowed to sleep in a storeroom. The thought alone should make her break down crying. Yet she was simply glaring down at him. Perhaps she was planning to set herself up as a tragic woman, so that some wanderer would take pity on her. How absurd.Â
"Do you truly have such little pride?" It was half taunt, half question.Â
The women scoffed again. "It is because of my pride that I will not accept your…" She made a noise like she was sick. "Generosity." The word was spoken with all the venom of a viper strike.
He laughed again, rolling over once more to place his chin in both of his palms. "You're an amusing little thing."
She recoiled like he had struck her, her mouth open, as if tasting something foul. "Ugh. I'm going to vomit."Â
"Haa, my wife is so mean to me."Â
"Your wife is going to need to clean her ears from hearing such shit." She shook her head, and spoke with a sigh. "Listen fool, my family attached me to you for the sake of impeding you."Â
"Yes?"Â
"So," She gave a smile with closed eyes. "Loath as I am to say, I'll be rooting for you." She placed her hands in her long sleeves, seeming to calm with the smooth sensation of the luxurious fabric. "If ever you must require my presence, explain to me how it will screw over my family, and I will play the part of a loving wife dutifully."
"Not a very filial woman are you?"
"And you are a filial son?"
He barked out a laugh. "Not at all! My bastard father has done nothing for me, save putting one so great as I into the world."
"Your sheer arrogance is something to be…not applauded, perhaps studied?"
"I indeed will be studied, in history books and in the eyes of all young hopefuls of the future."
Liu snorted, sitting down on the bed next to where her husband was. "Such a mighty man can surely sleep on the floor, while his poor wife takes the bed."
"And risk disturbing my beauty?" She gave him another entertaining look of disgust. Gang considered that his married life may not be so unpleasant after all, he could only imagine the kinds of faces she would make when she was forced to beg his mercy. "Surely a devout wife would allow her husband the only bed, no?"
"I hadn't known my husband was so frail that a single night of sleep on the floor would disturb him, I worry for my life, wed to someone so sickly."
He snorted. "Unfortunately for you, I lack any pride."
She gave him a look up and down. "I could tell." She rolled her eyes and stood. "Give me the blankets, and I'll take the floor."
"What's in it for me?"
"I don't attempt to smother you in your sleep."
It would take her hours even if she tried due to his cultivation, but the comment was entertaining enough he gave in, throwing her the blankets and all but one of the pillows. "Behold, my great charity."
"Oh yes~" she spoke with a poison laced tone. "So magnificent is the charity, allowing your wife bedding for her time on the floor, truly, your magnanimity is comparable to the Bhudda himself."
"Glad we agree."
Her eyebrow twitched, but she merely huffed, laying the blankets out on the ground. "Pompous ass."
"Haughty mule."
It was her turn to stick her tongue out at him, and turn over on the floor, her back to him. He huffed, lying back on the luxurious bed.
He couldn't help the smile twitching on his lips though, even as he glared at the ceiling. He was far too used to insults being leveled at his birth, comparing him to his brother, or other such veiled insults. Having a woman look him in his eyes and threaten to spit in his tea was a new experience.
Still, the smile receded. He would need to gain more strength, so that this detriment did not impair his ability. His eyes narrowed as he looked at the ceiling of their marriage room.
His brother, he would surpass such a man and claim his rightful place as the Guo heir.Â
While the two newlyweds were trading poison laden words, the families of the two clinked their cups together, drinking merrily.
Guo Jin, the patriarch of the Guo family, drank the expensive alcohol in his cup, letting out a loud and satisfied sigh.
"I must say, the heavens truly must've aligned for such a perfect marriage."
Tang Lin, the patriarch of the Teng family, sipped lightly in his own cup. "Indeed, I must thank you once again for receiving my daughter into your family, useless though she may be."
"The worse the better for that failure of a son."Â
Lin nodded lightly, taking another sip. "Well, as arranged the two will be entrusted to your family, yes?"
"Only in the lowest of ways. Gang, that fool, has been relocated to the outskirts of your Sect's territory. The land is owned by us, of the Guo family, but is mostly worthless. After his failure in the ascending cloud tournament, we have placed him there, and have him developing the territory. In truth, he is most likly going to rot there."
"So long as the Teng family no longer has to foot the bill for my useless daughter, I care little as to what fate they meet."
"Of course, of course. Let us drink once more, as the family of two failures, joined together forever under the heavens."
The two men once again clinked cups, sipping from the expensive drink with hatred in their hearts.
