Chapter 8 - Not goodbye

"I am sorry," Skye's voice reached her ears. Her head snapped in his direction and found him looking at her. She then looked behind her, and he was gone without telling her. She then looked back at Skye.

"Mhm," she hummed and then returned her attention to Martha.

"That is not what I am apologizing for…Well, that too, but this is about earlier," Nyx stared at him, her brows pulled together into a frown. This was not the time for them to go into another argument. "I promise I do not have any ill intentions towards you. There are just some things that I am unable to tell you, even if I want to. It is beyond my power," he tried to explain.

Nyx looked at him for a moment before she looked away. "This is hardly the time and place for such a conversation, Mr Morgan. Please respect my mother and do not bring this up here," she didn't look at him again after saying that.

"As you wish," he relented. He felt guilty even more so now that he was in the presence of the woman he had promised to take care of her daughter. That was why he wanted to talk, and maybe, just maybe, his conscience would allow him to have a breather.

"Mr Morgan," she called after remembering what Martha had said before she left her room. "I can not trust someone whom I do not know nor does he want to open up to me," she paused and looked at Martha and took a deep breath. "I will live here and not file for a divorce as long as you do not get in my business. I have a life and this marriage, we both know it is in name and nothing more. Whatever your reason may be for wanting to marry me so badly, I do not care. Not anymore. Live your life as you please, and I will live mine."

"Nyx…" Skye was only able to call her name. He couldn't find any words to say that would counter or agree to what she had said. It hurt that she would say something like that. In name or not, they were still married. He was her husband, and she was his wife.

He didn't mind marrying her. She was a good person, and so was he. They were not that bad a couple to begin with. If they could just put their differences aside, they could make it work. Tonight was their wedding night, yet here they were drawing lines. One holds back and keeps secrets while the other puts distance and builds a fence over her emotions and life. How pitiful they were.

"Do you mind having a conversation when this is over?" he asked in a calm tone. At the end of the day, she was still a woman who was forced into a marriage she did not want when it was clear that her heart belonged to another man. He couldn't blame her for her actions, especially since he was not helping. He wanted to tell her everything, but his hands were bound, and his lips were sealed. It was even normal to say he had a knife to his throat that wouldn't hesitate to sink into his flesh and cut all that was in there.

"Mhm," Nyx hummed, not finding anything wrong with a little talk. The sooner that they had it, the better it would be for the both of them.

"Thank you," Skye said, grateful that she didn't reject the idea. After her monologue about minding one's own business, it wouldn't be a surprise if she didn't want to talk anymore. He left the room to give her the space she needed to talk to her mother one last time before she wouldn't be able to do it again.

Nyx spent some time in there with Martha until it was too late at night. She returned to her room and found Reaper standing by the window with a book in hand. Wordlessly, she walked over to the bed to lie down. She was tired but she doubted she would be able to sleep.

"You have decided to stay," Reaper said. He closed the book and walked to her. She looked up at him and nodded her head.

"Mother wanted me to, and you have just said the same thing to me, didn't you? To live with my fellow humans and be happy even though you know I can not be. Don't worry though, I will manufacture my own happiness," Nyx replied. She scutched inside to give him some space when he sat at the edge of the bed.

He reached his hand for her hair and ran his fingers through it. "You will not be happy being with me. There is too much to consider before I take you in with me. The last time was the first, and not many were aware, but this time, it is different," He said, most of which Nyx did not quite understand.

Was there ever a time when she was with him? She couldn't remember, but he wouldn't lie. "What do you mean the last time was the first?" Just how many things is she supposed to know that she did not know?

"It is nothing to worry about, Little Bunny, if you are meant to know, you will remember all on your own," he leaned to her neck and kissed the birthmark that always caught his eyes. He then moved to her lips and hovered over them for a while before he pressed his lips on her.

"Is this a goodbye?" Nyx asked, wrapping her hands around his neck. He had done this same gesture in the past. Although she was younger back then and such intimate actions shouldn't be done with a child her age, he did. He kissed her birthmark and then kissed her lips, although light and gentle, it was still a kiss. After that, she never got to see him again until now.

"No, this is not goodbye," he replied with a faint smile playing on his lips as she took the initiative to kiss him. " I will be right here if you ever need me,' he spoke directly into her head. "Be a good girl, Nyx, my Little Bunny," he said after their kiss was over. He kissed her forehead and then disappeared.
