Chapter 1 - Lackluster (1)

"You're fired. Effective immediately. You are to grab your belongings from your cubicle and are to be escorted out by security. I do not want to see you here in the next 30 minutes."

Carmen stands alone in the halls as his boss shuts the door right in his face. This was his only and final job. This marks his 6th failure. He wasn't the brightest nor the most sociable which made his co-workers dislike him. It may have even been the reason he was fired to begin with. Nobody likes a downer. He has always tried his best to keep up. People stared and whispered to each other as he walked by. His desk wasn't all that great. A small gray area, flooded with papers and sticky notes. Carmen grabbed all of his items and stuffed them into a box as much as he could. "Serves you right, creep!" Someone yelled from the distance. He couldn't tell who it was but it didn't matter much to him as he just walked out of the office quietly.

"I'm sorry Carmen. We can't be together anymore. You promised to try your best in keeping this job. I can't see a future with us when you're jobless again. Goodbye."

"Please, Julia.. You're all I have left.. I don't want to lose you too." Carmen looked distraught.

"I really am sorry. There's nothing you can do to make me stay anymore. We are done."

Julia stands up from the table and walks away. Carmen sits alone in the café where his girlfriend just dumped him. They had been together for two years and had been inseparable. From everything he has been through, Julia was the only one to support him. He watches as his girlfriend leaves through the door and walk up to an unknown car that had been parked ever since they got there. It's a sleek, expensive model with a pitch black color coating and dark tinted windows. A tall, well-built man steps out from the car to grab onto her hand and kiss it. He guides her into the car and it drives away, disappearing around the street corner. Carmen breaks down and leaves the café, absolutely heartbroken by what he saw.

He arrives back at his apartment. A gloomy darkness enshrouds every crevice of the living room with a slight silver glow of moonlight peeking through the curtains. It seems that his girlfriend already moved out completely. The silence flows through the room, a barren void. He lays to rest on the couch, letting the emptiness fill his ears. "Where did it go wrong?". He thought to himself about his own life, how terrible things are for him in the present. His past was something he always wanted to fix but now it only affects him even more. His future became non-existent and now there is no one he can rely on for help.

With no where left to run, he decides to end it all. It would've been that way if he hadn't met his girlfriend, but now that there's nothing good for him it's better to let go. Carmen looks at the balcony window, deciding that the way to do it is to jump off the ledge. He imagined his girlfriend comforting him through his hardships, telling him that everything would be okay. A shattered vision that exists within the mind of a frail man. Tears seep from his eyes and the last glitter of hope fades away.

Carmen opens the glass door, stepping out into the moonlight and looking towards the edge. He gulps, terrified of this experience. He doesn't really want to do this. His body resists the temptation while his mind is eager to release all the pent up anguish. However, his hopelessness sets in and he climbs onto the railings. Only a few more inches off and he would soon be free. The moon shines down on him, as if it was giving the spotlight to the man that wants to end it all. He takes one last glance at the world around him. The brightly colored lights covered the city. People rustling through the streets and sidewalks, cars honking furiously due to the traffic, sign boards and neon signs flashing with advertisements. "It's beautiful..."

He takes a breath of the city air. His hand reaching out towards the moon, as if he could almost grab it. Carmen wished for a better life in which he could live a happier and more successful one. More tears rolled down his cheeks as he reminisced about his family. "I wish I could talk to guys once more..". He takes the leap of faith, jumping off the balcony railings, embracing the cold air that pressed against his skin as he fell. "Ah... maybe we can meet in the afterlife.." Carmen closes his eyes as he continues to descend.
