Chereads / Shield Vs Sword / Chapter 2 - Prologue

Chapter 2 - Prologue

In the waning light of a war-torn land, where the echoes of conflict danced in the breeze like ghosts of battles past, sat two souls amidst the chaos. The woman, her visage adorned with tear streaks that shimmered in the dying light, clutched a sword tightly within her grasp, her hands betraying the tremors of fear and uncertainty.

Across from her, amidst the backdrop of crimson-stained garments that bore witness to the brutality of war, sat a man whose countenance radiated a haunting beauty amidst the carnage.

Their attire, once pristine, now bore the marks of the battlefield, stained with the blood of fallen comrades and adversaries alike. Yet even in the midst of such desolation, the woman's beauty remained undimmed, her features possessing a delicate allure that belied the strength within her. And beside her, the man, his rugged charm accentuated by the scars and injuries that adorned his form, exuded a mesmerizing presence that captivated the eye.

As they sat together, the woman cradling the man in her arms as he endured the agony of his wounds, their shared suffering forged a bond that transcended the horrors surrounding them. And though their hearts were heavy with the weight of their duty and the burdens of war, a flicker of hope ignited within them, a glimmer of possibility amidst the encroaching darkness.

"You must do your duty," the man's voice pierced through the cacophony of battle, his words a solemn reminder of the grim reality they faced.

"But we can still make things right," the woman pleaded, her voice choked with tears, her heart heavy with despair.

In the distance, the thunderous gallop of a thousand hooves heralded the approach of an inexorable force, a tide of destruction sweeping towards them with merciless intent. The man turned to the woman, his gaze unwavering, his resolve unyielding.

"It's too late now," he murmured, his voice tinged with resignation. "You must fulfill your duty, else everything will be futile. All these struggles, all the people who sacrificed themselves. We can't let that go in vain."

But the woman's spirit refused to surrender to fate's cruel decree. "No." She shook her head violently, "No no no! I won't leave you. You promised me that you would not leave me. You will stay with me till the end." She cried.

The man sighed, as his face glowed in the yellow hue of the setting sun. His eyes looked enchanting yet commanding, that could make anyone unable to refuse him. "I did. And you know that I always keep my promise, especially to you," he confessed.

With each passing moment, the pounding of hooves grew louder, the clamor of battle drawing ever nearer. Time was running out, and the man knew that their final moments together were slipping away like grains of sand through an hourglass.

"There is one last thing that must be done," the man's voice wavered, his strength fading like the dying embers of a fire. "And only you can do it."

But the woman shook her head, her resolve unyielding. "I cannot bear to lose you," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.

As the thunderous roar of the approaching horde reached a crescendo, the man's gaze softened, his eyes brimming with unspoken sorrow. "Will you let me hold you one last time?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper against the backdrop of chaos.

With tears streaming down her cheeks, the woman nodded, her heart heavy with grief and love intertwined. And as the tumult of battle engulfed them, they embraced, two souls bound by duty, honor, and a love that transcended even the ravages of war.

The woman's heart shattered as the realization dawned upon her, a cruel twist of fate plunging her into a maelstrom of grief and disbelief. She recoiled in horror as she felt the blade sink deeper into the man's chest, her hands trembling uncontrollably, unable to halt the tragic course of events unfolding before her.

"It was the only way," the man's voice, now a mere whisper, reached her ears, his smile a bittersweet reassurance amidst the anguish that threatened to consume them both. "I would rather die in your hands than someone else's."

"No, no no! Why did you do that?"

"I have no choice."

The woman cried, as she desperately tried to stop the bleeding with her hands. "We could have left together. We still have time."

"No, we don't," The man said as he coughed some blood. "I will only delay you. So you have to leave. NOW!"

"I would rather die than see you perish," she declared, her defiance a beacon of hope amidst the encroaching darkness. "I am not leaving you. No, never!"

"Remember you promised me that day, that you will do anything I ask you?" the man reminded weakly, "I want you to fulfill that promise. Leave and do your duty, Princess!"

The woman's protests fell upon deaf ears as the man's unwavering grip held her fast, refusing to release the sword that sealed his fate. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she confronted the harsh reality of his sacrifice, her heart torn between love and despair.

"Liar!" she cried out, her voice raw with anguish. "You promised to love me for eternity, yet you betray your own words!"

Despite the agony etched upon his features, the man's smile remained, a beacon of solace in the darkness that surrounded them. "Forgive me, Princess," he whispered, as he kissed the back of her hand lightly. His voice strained with the effort of speaking. "In my next life, I will protect you better. This time, it will be me who will chase and woo you, with all my heart. Every effort will be mine alone."

With a tenderness that belied the agony coursing through his veins, he brushed away her tears with trembling hands, his touch a fleeting caress upon her sorrow-stricken face. And as he pressed a final kiss to her forehead, they embraced one last time, two souls intertwined in a bond that transcended the bounds of mortality.

"I love you, Meenakshi," he whispered, as his voice faded into the ether as his strength waned. And with those final words of devotion upon his lips, his hands fell limply to his sides, his spirit released from the mortal coil, leaving behind a legacy of love and sacrifice that would endure for eternity.

"NOOOO!!!"
