Chereads / The Wooden Pallet / Chapter 2 - Gods' Flaw

Chapter 2 - Gods' Flaw

"You fool! How could you, a "GOD" even fail your own very job!?!"

In the absence of darkness, there's light, in light there's two figure in a heated conversation... or rather, it was a slaughter.

"I'm sorry father, I'm sorry, I thought it was him who did those cruel things. I... I didn't know he would be saved by that guy."

"And now, you just punished... not just an innocent man, but the embodiment of human kindness. A person, we, the gods, are supposedly protecting from mischiefs! Now look at that man! YOU are in a very fortunate situation right now merely because he remains a kind person despite your cruel punishment!"

In a holographic screen, floating just beside them, is the moving image of a young child covered in dust and dirt, working earnestly after giving time to others slave a time to play.

It was precious... It was adorable.

"How could you not see that!?"

"I-I'm sorry father, I was busy!"

"Busy for what? Flirting with the other gods?!"

"N-No... The psychopath are yet to leave the world of Earth. So I was trying to lessen his victim by divine intervention."

"LADY... You are in a deep shit if your mother found out about this. AND IT WILL NOT BE LONG! Unfortunately for you, we cannot directly intervene to Mikael. So as your punishment, you will watch that child 24/7, with no rest nor time for flirting."

The lady sniff as tears stops falling from her eyes.

"Mikael would see you as cruel if-"

"Do not guilt trip me!"

The father of the goddess smack the back of her head and surround her with the holographic images, all directed to the child in each and every different angle.

Truly, the goddess meant no harm. It was merely a genuine accident for the kind man's suffering as of now.

That's why, she fully accepts this punishment. For, as long as she watches over him, with her power, she can make the man's life better.

But... it still saddens her.

She held the holographic image showing the child's fragile face, crying on pain away from people to see, holding places where he was heavily beaten by a size thrice of his.

"I'm sorry, young one... I cannot repent enough for your current and future pain. But I will make sure you are well-treated using my power. Even if it means I drain it"

5 years had passed, and a month left before the deadline payment for the loan of his family.

I had grown used to the pain of being beaten, but so did the beating was lessen. I was yet to find the reason, but the slaves I work with says a lot about his looks.

Perhaps that was the reason.

I easily accepted their optimism and carry on our jobs.

And as we grew, our jobs also got harder.

Now, I am to always carry barrels of waters from the wells at least ten times daily to cater the needs of the thirsty adventurers. My job also increased, serving the people in the diner's area of the inn.

Despite these numerous slave jobs, I didn't falter, and instead, with full of excitement, I accepted it all.

Why not? Despite the ever tiring jobs, I am always in the presence of my loving customer... Lyza. A C-rank adventurer with a job of healer. She have the most amazing personality and adding those fair skin and golden hair, she is a total angel!

Even today, I will be able to meet her.

But it seems I was unlucky.

"haha... ah... Mikael, this is Tyler. I was hired by him to join the group and so, I was here. I was thinking of renting a room for one? Can you tell the master, please?"

It seems I was a tad bit late to capture the heart of this maiden.

But... according to how she describe him, it seems quite trustworthy so I guess I should live it at that.

"Master! A room for one please!"

"Don't shout you imbecile, I'm just at the other side!"

Then a smack in a head I received. It was painful, but then, I got used to it.

"Ah. One room, yes? Do you need anything else?"

"Yes... we need a bucket of water. Just live it at the door's front."

"Heard that fool? Get a water from the barrel and have it delivered to their room."

I excuse myself to the backyard and filled the wooden bucket with a handful of water from the well.

As I do, I thought about Lyza.

I didn't particularly mind her getting a partner, she's beautiful, she have a good personality, even making her way to give me extra foods in case I didn't had some.

Those characteristics of her would even shock a person if she says she doesn't have a husband. She's a wife material and for a lifetime at that.

And for an extra, she's a healer.

I believe healers are quite amazing. Being able to heal any wounds in a certain situation. It comes in handy in certain things, especially to a kind of works a slave gets into.

I carried the buckets above towards the 2nd floor... The counter there pointed the room and so I left it just in front of their door.

I want to eavesdrop, but the counter lady was eyeing me, perhaps wary of the slaves sneaking a glance to each door.

I understand her intention, though. She was merely doing her job.

So without much things to do there, I hurriedly left the floor and continue my job.

The next day, I awoke from a loud shout of our master.

"Rise and shine you bastards!"

His words had become our alarm every morning.

So, all of us started the day as usual, with an empty stomach, we were given heavy tasks, such as carrying barrels of water to other houses.

But before I could start my work, I noticed a lady sitting alone near the window. I immediately noticed the lady upon looking her dress so I made my way towards her.

And as expected it was her... only that she is extremely pale and have dark, swollen eyes.

"I see you had a rough night."

It wasn't hard to get into such conclusion if one thinks about it. The marks on her shoulder, vulgar marks on her necks, and her red, swollen eyes. Only a fool wouldn't notice it.

She rested her head to my stomach and silently cries, I merely patted her head and gave her the best thing I could do in this kind of situation... A comfort.

"There, there. I am here. Don't worry."

*

"Thanks, Mikael. You're so nice."

"No problem, just doing my job maam! Well, then. The master will beat me if he noticed I haven't delivered the waters. Well then!"

"Okay, bye."

I wave my hands before leaving, but before I could step off the inn, I stop for a bit, then I returned and look at the lady with sad smile.

"Don't kill yourself, okay? If you think you can't carry on your life, I am either at the back or at the basement. I will do anything for you."

"You're... so kind."

"I... am not. I am merely being a hypocrite. Well, then."
