Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 (Beast Hunting)

"The vampires!" Grimshaw thought, his mind consumed by thoughts of them. "They are the primary reason I accepted his offer."

The age-old feud between vampires and werewolves seemed eternally irreconcilable. One cursed by the full moon, the other by daylight. Werewolves, ancient and possessing lethal bites, stood as a primal threat to vampires despite their relatively shorter existence. In turn, vampires, endowed with superior strength and cunning, bore the scars of countless battles fought over centuries.

Grimshaw harbored a deep-seated hatred for vampires, stemming not just from their predatory nature but from the brutal massacre of his family. His salvation came at the hands of a beta, who ascended to alpha by usurping leadership of the modern werewolf pack.

Grimshaw was a runaway from the pack at an extent of his life, and knowing they were after him, he took to his heels.

Fleeing from the relentless pursuit of his former pack, Grimshaw found an unlikely ally in a reclusive billionaire who shared his vision of survival and dominance. It was out of this that the society of shadows cane into existence.

Together, they forged an alliance driven by mutual need—protection for Grimshaw and access to resources for the billionaire, whose wealth and influence offered a shield against their enemies.

Yet, once again, Grimshaw found himself a pawn in a larger game, manipulated by the enigmatic figure known only as Blackthorn. This shadowy mentor promised tantalizing rewards: power beyond imagination, status among the elite, and the means to exact vengeance upon those who had shattered Grimshaw's life. Whether to ascend to the coveted alpha position within the werewolf hierarchy or to eradicate vampires from existence, Blackthorn's guidance offered the pathway to achieve his deepest desires.

In Grimshaw's eyes, Blackthorn was a savior compared to the loathed vampires, the embodiment of all that threatened werewolf kind.

To the former, the latter embodied a dark salvation, a necessary evil in a world where vampires were seen as the ultimate threat to werewolfkind.

Albeit, With each step deeper into Blackthorn's world, Grimshaw felt the inexorable pull of destiny, knowing his life would never be the same.

It was the dawn of a new month at the esteemed Academy of Arcane Arts, where tradition and excellence intertwined in its hallowed halls.

Disappointment hung palpably in the air for both Dante and Evelyn as they found themselves falling short of their goal for the month: visiting Valeria and their other friends.

Evelyn let out a heavy sigh, her expression tinged with regret, while Dante, ever the optimist, maintained a warm smile on his face despite their setback.

"We missed our chance to visit them," Evelyn murmured wistfully.

"Well, we couldn't help it with all those extra hunting lessons," Dante replied lightly, his tone carrying a hint of amusement.

The academy had mandated additional lessons at month's end to compensate for earlier disruptions, effectively canceling their anticipated break. Though unpopular among most students, the decision was non-negotiable.

Today, however, promised a reprieve and a reason for smiles all around. This week marked the commencement of beast hunting, the primary focus of lessons and activities. The mere announcement of the upcoming expeditions sent a ripple of excitement and energy through the students body.

"Prepare your gear! This group led by Mr Shabazz who is unquestionably me would take off in five minutes." Announced a commanding figure, his imposing presence accentuated by a dark complexion and a monstrous physique, his voice echoing through the room.

And so, another bustling day began for Evelyn, Dante, and their fellow students at the Academy of Arcane Arts.

---

As Evelyn adjusted the straps of her leather hunting gear, she couldn't help but feel a surge of anticipation mixed with a hint of nervousness. Beast hunting was a rigorous test of their arcane skills and teamwork, a chance to prove themselves amidst the ancient forests and mystical creatures that roamed beyond the academy's protected grounds.

Dante, always eager for adventure, flashed a reassuring grin at Evelyn. "Ready for this, Evelyn? I hear Mr. Shabazz doesn't take it easy on first-timers."

Evelyn nodded, her determination setting in. "Absolutely, Dante. We've trained hard for this. And with my knack for elemental spells and your knowledge of ancient wards, we'll make a formidable team."

Their group gathered near the academy's grand gates, a portal just a few meters ahead where Mr. Shabazz stood tall and imposing, his presence commanding respect. "Listen up, students," he boomed, his voice carrying authority that echoed through the courtyard.

"Today marks the beginning of our beast hunting week. Our mission is to locate and subdue a Direfang, rumored to have been spotted in the western marshes. This creature is cunning and dangerous, so stay sharp and follow my lead."

With a nod from Mr. Shabazz, the group set off, their footsteps echoing on the cobblestone path leading out of the academy grounds and into the wild unknown through the portal.

The air was alive with excitement and nervous energy, every student eager to prove themselves in the field.

As they ventured deeper into the dense forest, Evelyn's senses heightened. The ancient trees whispered secrets of forgotten magic, their branches stretching towards the canopy where sunlight filtered through in ethereal patterns.

Hours passed as they navigated through rugged terrain and tangled undergrowth. The sounds of wildlife grew louder, a symphony of chirping birds and rustling leaves that masked the subtle movements of unseen creatures.

Suddenly, a low growl reverberated through the air, sending a chill down a few students spine.

Mr. Shabazz signaled for silence, his keen eyes scanning the surroundings. In the distance, amber eyes gleamed from the shadows—a pair of Direfangs, formidable predators known for their speed and ferocity.

Without hesitation, Mr. Shabazz raised his hand, casting a barrier of shimmering light that encircled their group. "Stay together," he commanded in a low voice. "We'll lure them into the open where we have the advantage."

Evelyn stretched her palms forward, channeling ancient incantations she had studied under the Nexus Sage. The lattet whispered elemental invocations under his breath, while the former prepared to unleash bursts of ice at a moment's notice.

The Direfangs circled cautiously, their predatory instincts sharp. With a sudden lunge, they attacked, claws slashing through the air with deadly precision. Spells and wards clashed against primal fury as the students fought back, their training and teamwork proving invaluable in the face of danger.

Through skill and determination, they managed to drive the Direfangs back, forcing them to retreat deeper into the forest. Adrenaline surged through the students as they caught their breath, their hearts pounding with the thrill of survival and triumph.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the treetops, Mr. Shabazz nodded approvingly at his students. "Well done, everyone. Today, you've proven yourselves capable hunters and guardians of the arcane arts. Remember this day—it marks the beginning of your journey towards mastery. In the next hunting event, I would not help, but I'll still oversee the hunt in case anything goes wrong."

Evelyn exchanged a proud smile with Dante, as they returned to the academy under the fading light of day, they knew that their adventures had only just begun, with countless mysteries and challenges awaiting them in the mystical realm they called home.
