After the king gave his approval for the research of necromancy, the mages' experiments led to the utter destruction of their nation, with the only survivors being the necromancers on the island.
Thousands of years later, the man known as Netherius was born to a sickly woman who had been captured by the residents of Death-Crumble Valley, passing away during his birth.
Netherius' childhood was similar to Dante's, as he spent his first few years in an orphanage, training with the necromancers who lived nearby.
