Chapter 1 - Prologue

The sound of silk against marble made it feel like a carousel of opulence in the grand hall. Eirene stood away from the dancers and looked up at the cherubim carvings high above. That's when she felt his presence before she saw him—Kaiser, with his mischievous eyes and a smile that hinted at secrets untold.

"Eirene, may I have this dance with you?" As he held out his hand. His voice was as smooth as the brandy being poured at the table next to him, cutting through the noise of the ball. Kaiser walked up to her with the confidence of a man who had never heard the word "no."

She couldn't help but smile, and the corners of her mouth lifted in silent agreement. Eirene put her hand on his, and the warmth of his touch made her arm shiver for no reason.

There were angels and devils around, but it was the adorable devil who got her to join the dance. Caught in Kaiser's arms, she whispered, "If you wish to seduce an angel, you must play the part of a devil." With a look of defiance in his eyes, he replied breathily, "Then let the devil lead, Eirene."

Their dance became a duel, and each step was a defiance against the gods.

"In this desire," he said in a raspy voice, "our dance becomes an orchestra of forbidden notes." His eyes held hers, dark and piercing, which holds mysteries. As the candles burned, she matched his intensity, note for note, step for step. "A melody that goes through heaven and hell," she countered, her voice low. Their bodies were close, too close for mere dance partners, yet not close enough for the hunger in their eyes.

Every step they took showed how much they desired each other. The way Kaiser's hand pressed against her back, guiding her closer, spoke volumes of the silent desires that passed between them."Every step with you is a dance on the brink of joy," he murmured, his breath warm against her cheek, "where heaven and hell disappear." The music kept playing. Eirene, bewitched, replied, "The dance is our rebellion; it's unavoidable, like the sun rising after a dark night."

Kaiser's breath was a warm whisper over her skin as they swayed together, the world and sounds blurring around them. "Tonight, let us be both architects and prisoners of our own sin," he said, his voice a velvet darkness that promised sweet torment.

Their steps slowed, a rhythm that matched the thudding of Eirene's heart. She could feel the heat coming from his body, the controlled strength in his arms as they pulled her closer still. Their foreheads touched, a delicate point of connection in the eye of the tempest they had conjured with their dance.

"In the dance, we are neither devil nor angel," Eirene whispered back, her breath mingling with his, "just two souls lost."

Is it forbidden love or their past lives that draws them together?
