Chereads / A New Stefan Salvatore / Chapter 28 - Meeting Jacob

Chapter 28 - Meeting Jacob

The next morning, Mystic Falls High buzzed with life. Students moved through the halls in chaotic harmony—laughter echoing, lockers slamming, and the rhythmic hum of chatter filling the air. Sarah was already at her locker, her posture stiff as she fiddled nervously with her combination lock. Her usual casual confidence was absent; instead, her movements were fidgety, her fingers trembling slightly as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

She glanced over her shoulder, her hazel eyes scanning the crowded hallway for any sign of Jacob or Aurora. The tension from the night before hadn't left her, and she couldn't shake the unease that clung to her like a shadow.

"Hey, Sarah," a cheerful voice called out, breaking through her thoughts. It was Bonnie Bennett, her bright smile warm and genuine. Bonnie's presence brought a brief moment of relief, and Sarah forced a small smile in return.

"Hey, Bonnie," Sarah replied, her voice lighter than she felt inside. She closed her locker with a soft clang and adjusted the strap of her bag. "You ready for another thrilling day of school?"

Bonnie chuckled, rolling her eyes playfully. "Thrilling might be a stretch, but sure. I'll take it over being home alone with Grams' herbal remedies."

Sarah laughed weakly, but her attention was already drifting. As Bonnie continued talking about their history assignment, Sarah's gaze shifted down the hallway. Her breath hitched as she spotted Jacob and Aurora walking side by side, their presence commanding in a way that made people instinctively step aside.

Jacob's stride was purposeful, his broad shoulders squared as he moved with an almost predatory grace. His sharp jawline was set, his piercing eyes scanning the hall with a cool detachment. Despite the casual jeans and leather jacket he wore, there was an undeniable weight to his presence—a sense of danger that hung around him like a storm cloud.

Aurora, on the other hand, seemed to glide rather than walk, her movements fluid and deliberate. Her chin was held high, her striking features calm and composed, though there was a flicker of something darker in her eyes. Her fingers rested lightly on the strap of her purse, her manicured nails tapping rhythmically against the leather in a subtle sign of her impatience.

Students whispered as they passed, their curiosity and unease palpable. "Who are they?" one girl murmured to her friend. "New kids?"

"They look like trouble," another added, their tone tinged with both fascination and wariness.

Jacob and Aurora seemed oblivious—or perhaps indifferent—to the attention they were drawing. But Sarah wasn't. She swallowed hard, her palms suddenly clammy as she adjusted her grip on her bag. She forced herself to look away, her heart pounding in her chest.

Bonnie noticed her sudden shift in mood and tilted her head curiously. "Everything okay?" she asked, her brow furrowing.

Sarah nodded quickly, plastering on a too-bright smile. "Yeah, just—uh, forgot I left my notebook in my last class. I'll catch you later, okay?"

Before Bonnie could respond, Sarah turned and walked briskly toward the nearest hallway corner, her pace quickening with each step. Her mind raced as she tried to figure out what Jacob and Aurora were planning by coming here. Whatever it was, it couldn't be good.

Jacob stopped near the trophy case in the center of the hallway, his gaze scanning the gleaming plaques and photographs without really seeing them. "This place hasn't changed much," he muttered, his tone devoid of emotion.

Aurora smirked faintly, her eyes following a group of cheerleaders who giggled nervously as they passed by. "It's charming in its predictability," she said, her voice light but tinged with subtle disdain. Her eyes flickered toward Jacob, narrowing slightly. "Are you sure this is the best way to go about things?"

Jacob turned his head slowly to meet her gaze, his expression unreadable. "We need to get close to her," he said simply. "And this is where she is. Unless you have a better idea?"

Aurora tilted her head, her lips curving into a small, enigmatic smile. "I always have better ideas," she said smoothly, her tone laced with quiet confidence. But she didn't argue further. Instead, her gaze shifted, sharp and assessing, as she scanned the crowd.

Jacob's eyes followed hers, landing on a familiar face further down the hall. Elena Gilbert. She was standing with Stefan, her warm smile lighting up her face as she handed him a book.

Jacob's sharp gaze locked onto Stefan, his expression faltering for a brief moment as though he were caught off guard. Aurora, who rarely showed anything beyond cool composure, hesitated mid-step, her graceful movements briefly disrupted. Her piercing eyes narrowed slightly as she studied Stefan with a mix of surprise and something deeper—something almost like recognition.

Jacob's jaw clenched, his hands curling into fists at his sides. His usual air of calculated confidence wavered as he stared at Stefan, his piercing blue eyes reflecting a storm of emotions he couldn't quite suppress. It wasn't just that Stefan was here in Mystic Falls—he was completely unprepared for the sight of his father, the man whose face he saw every time he looked in the mirror.

Aurora tilted her head ever so slightly, her lips curving into a faint, enigmatic smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Well," she murmured under her breath, her voice low and smooth, "this is... unexpected."

Stefan, meanwhile, had caught sight of the pair and froze. His usual calm, collected demeanor cracked as his brows furrowed, his green eyes narrowing as he focused on Jacob. The resemblance was uncanny—too uncanny to be a coincidence. His lips parted slightly, his breath hitching as a flicker of something unspoken passed across his face.

Elena, standing beside him, noticed the shift in his posture and frowned. "Stefan?" she asked, her tone concerned. "Are you okay?"

Stefan didn't answer immediately. Instead, he raised a hand in a subtle gesture, signaling Jacob and Aurora to come closer. His movements were deliberate, but there was a tension in the set of his shoulders, a tightness in his jaw that betrayed the swirl of emotions beneath his calm exterior.

Jacob hesitated, glancing at Aurora as if silently asking for direction. Aurora returned his look with a slight arch of her brow, her expression cool and unreadable. She gave a faint shrug, her body language relaxed despite the tension crackling in the air.

"Looks like we've been summoned," Aurora said softly, her voice carrying a hint of dry amusement. But there was something in her eyes—a glimmer of vulnerability that she quickly masked.

Jacob exhaled sharply, straightening his posture and adjusting the collar of his leather jacket as though steeling himself. He took a step forward, his movements purposeful but heavy, as though he were walking into battle. Aurora followed, her graceful stride contrasting sharply with his more deliberate pace.

As they approached, Stefan's gaze remained fixed on Jacob, his expression one of quiet disbelief. When they were close enough to hear each other over the din of the hallway, Stefan spoke, his voice low and steady but tinged with an edge of uncertainty.

"You," he said, his eyes locked on Jacob, "look... familiar."

Jacob tensed, his jaw tightening as he met Stefan's gaze head-on. "Do I?" he replied evenly, though there was a slight crack in his voice that betrayed the undercurrent of emotion he was trying to suppress.

Aurora's lips twitched into a faint smile, her sharp eyes flicking between Stefan and Jacob. "Well, this is awkward," she said lightly, though there was a distinct edge to her tone.

Elena, standing beside Stefan, looked between them with wide eyes, her confusion growing. "Stefan, who are they?" she asked, her voice tentative.

Stefan finally tore his gaze away from Jacob and turned to Elena, his expression softening slightly. "These are my... siblings," he said carefully, his voice steady despite the unspoken weight of his words.

Aurora's smile widened, a hint of mischief dancing in her eyes. "Siblings," she echoed, her tone light but laced with irony. "That's one way to put it."

Jacob said nothing, his piercing gaze still locked on Stefan. His hands were shoved into his jacket pockets, his fingers curling into fists as he struggled to keep his emotions in check. The resemblance between the two men was undeniable, and it clearly wasn't lost on anyone.

Elena looked between them, her brow furrowing. "You all look..." she hesitated, searching for the right words. "A lot alike."

Stefan glanced at Jacob again, his lips pressing into a thin line. "I suppose we do," he said quietly. His tone was neutral, but there was a flicker of something deeper in his eyes—something that only Aurora caught.

Aurora tilted her head, her gaze lingering on Stefan for a moment longer than necessary. "It's been a long time, hasn't it?" she said softly, her voice carrying a subtle weight. "Since we've all been in the same place."

Stefan's expression flickered, his carefully maintained composure slipping for just a moment. He nodded slowly, his throat bobbing as he swallowed. "Yes," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It has."

Jacob shifted uncomfortably, his sharp jawline tightening as he tore his gaze away from Stefan. "We're here now," he said curtly, his tone clipped. "That's all that matters, right?"

Stefan opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, the shrill sound of the school bell rang through the hallway, breaking the tension. Students began filing into classrooms, their conversations and movements filling the space with noise and activity.

Aurora glanced around, her expression composed but her body language tense. "Looks like we've caused quite the scene," she said, her tone light but with a hint of sarcasm.

Jacob exhaled sharply, his shoulders relaxing slightly as the crowd dispersed. He looked at Stefan one last time, his piercing eyes filled with a mixture of anger, confusion, and something that might have been longing. "We'll talk later," he said, his voice low.

Without waiting for a response, Jacob turned and walked away, his movements stiff and deliberate. Aurora lingered for a moment, her gaze flickering between Stefan and Elena before she followed, her stride as graceful as ever.

Stefan watched them go, his expression conflicted. Elena touched his arm gently, her voice soft. "Stefan, who are they really?" she asked.

Stefan hesitated, his jaw tightening as he stared after Jacob and Aurora. "It's... complicated," he said finally, his voice heavy with emotion. "I'll explain everything. Just... not here."
