Chereads / When The Sky Bled / Chapter 31 - 31

Chapter 31 - 31

The hooves of the borrowed horse echoed through the forest; each beat a heavy thud in the silence that followed Sera's sacrifice. Rezak led the way, the weight of the saddled animal and his own grief pulling him forward.

Delena rode behind him, her small form a fragile silhouette against the dense foliage. The memory of her mother's final breath, her hand clutching hers, was etched raw in her mind. The world had lost its vibrancy, painted only in shades of loss and regret.

As they emerged into a clearing, the familiar outline of his home brought a flicker of hope to Rezak's weary heart. He dismounted, gently lifting Delena down and settling her on the ground. His eyes scanned the silent house, searching for any sign of life, any clue to who the blade had spared.

With a deep sigh, he knocked. The sound echoed hollow in the stillness, then was answered by a hesitant scrape of footsteps. The door creaked open, revealing a face creased with worry and exhaustion. It was his wife, but something had changed in her eyes, a flicker of fear mingling with the relief.

Rezak pushed open the door and enveloped her in a hug, tears finally breaking through the dam of grief. "You're safe," he choked out, burying his face in her hair.

His wife gently pushed him back, her touch hesitant. "You've been gone so long," she whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

"I won't leave you again," he vowed, his heart heavy with the promise he knew he could barely keep.

"There's something you need to know," she said, her voice trembling. "Our son... he..." She couldn't finish the sentence, the pain raw in her throat.

Rezak pulled her close again, the weight of another loss crushing him. "I'm so sorry," he whispered, the words a balm he couldn't offer himself.

A small tug on his clothes drew his attention. He looked down to see Delena, her eyes red and swollen, gazing at them with a mixture of fear and curiosity.

His wife spoke, her voice barely audible. "Who is she?"

Rezak took a deep breath, the truth settling like a stone in his stomach. "We lost our son," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "But we found a daughter."

He joined their hands, his own linking them together, a fragile bridge across the chasm of grief. In their shared loss, he found a flicker of hope, a reason to keep going, to build a new life from the ashes of the old. The road ahead would be long and difficult, but they wouldn't face it alone. They had each other, and in Delena, a chance to heal, to love again.
