Chereads / Tale of Two Brothers [The Throne Saga] / Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Barracks

Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Barracks

Ray and Ra's approach to the imposing Knight's Barracks was met with a palpable shift in atmosphere, from the vibrant chaos of the market district to the disciplined silence that surrounded the stronghold of Alleria's defenders. The stark, stone walls of the barracks rose before them, a barrier between the world they knew and the one they sought to enter.

As they neared the entrance, two guards clad in shining armor and bearing the crest of Alleria halted their progress with a synchronized step forward. The air filled with an unspoken tension as the guards sized up the brothers with a discerning gaze.

Ray, mustering all the courage he could, addressed the guards with a voice stronger than he felt. "Good sirs, we've come to speak with Sir Gerith. He visited us personally and offered us a place in the Knight's Training Academy."

The taller guard, his armor clanking softly as he moved, tilted his head, eyeing them with a mix of curiosity and disbelief. "Sir Gerith, you say? And he offered you two, peasants, by the look of it, a place in the academy?" His tone dripped with skepticism, the words 'peasants' lingering in the air like an unbridgeable gap between their worlds.

Undeterred, Ra stepped forward, his resolve as clear as the day. "Yes, sir. We may not look like much, but Sir Gerith saw something in us. Please, just let him know Ray and Ra are here, as he requested."

The guards exchanged glances, their expressions hidden behind the metal of their helmets. The silence that followed was thick with consideration, the possibility of turning away potential candidates weighed against the improbability of their story.

Finally, the second guard, who had remained silent until now, spoke up, his voice softer but still laced with doubt. "Wait here," he said, not unkindly. "I'll check with Sir Gerith. But I warn you, if this is a jest, the repercussions will not be light."

As the guard turned and disappeared behind the gates, Ray and Ra were left standing in the shadow of the barracks, the weight of their journey and the uncertainty of their future pressing down on them. They stood side by side, the bond of brotherhood their anchor in the swirling tide of anticipation and fear.

Moments turned to minutes, and just as doubt began to gnaw at their resolve, the gate creaked open. The guard reappeared, his posture betraying his surprise. "Sir Gerith will see you now," he said, stepping aside. "Follow me, and don't stray."

The brothers exchanged a quick, relieved glance before following the guard into the heart of the barracks. With each step, the reality of their situation settled deeper, their humble beginnings, the forest they called home, and now, the chance to prove themselves in a world far removed from anything they had known.

"Peasants or not, you've got guts. Sir Gerith doesn't just see anyone," the guard murmured as they walked, his tone now holding a hint of respect. "Let's see if you're worth his time."

As Ray and Ra stepped into Sir Gerith's office, they were immediately enveloped by the room's warm, scholarly ambiance, a stark departure from the austere exterior of the barracks. The office was richly furnished, illuminated by sunlight pouring through the tall windows, casting a serene light on the walls adorned with weapons and shields,a testament to valor and duty.

Sir Gerith, donning a simple but dignified attire, motioned for them to take a seat across from his large, oak desk, cluttered with documents and scrolls. Behind him, a grand tapestry depicted the city's storied history, a silent witness to the countless decisions made within these walls.

"Boys," Sir Gerith began, his voice imbued with a mix of concern and authority, "there's been word of a fire near your home. We feared the worst had happened to you." He paused, allowing the gravity of his words to sink in. "Can you share what occurred?"

With a nod from Ray, the brothers recounted their harrowing experience, from the attack on their home to their unexpected venture into the undercity. Sir Gerith listened intently, his expression turning somber with the unfolding narrative.

Once they finished, Sir Gerith leaned back, his gaze shifting between the brothers and the symbols of knighthood that surrounded them. "The ordeal you've faced speaks volumes of your courage. However, the dangers you've encountered also highlight the threats lurking in the shadows, threats to you and to Alleria. I would be very careful within the market Jeros was known to be a leader under a powerful undercity crime boss. We still do not know much about who he is under. "

He stood and approached the window, looking out at the training grounds with a contemplative air. "I'll see to it personally that you're included in the trials for the Knight's Training Academy. But," he turned to face them, "I must be clear, entry into the academy is not guaranteed. The trials are designed to test the mettle of all who aspire to become knights, including those born into nobility and those who've trained their entire lives for this moment."

The gravity of his words hung in the air, framing the stark reality of the challenge they were about to face. The office, a sanctuary of wisdom and leadership, had become the backdrop for a pivotal moment in their lives.

"I cannot make promises regarding the outcome," Sir Gerith continued, "but I have faith in your potential. The trials will not only test your skill but also your heart and resolve. Remember, the path of a knight is one of service, honor, and sacrifice."

As Ray and Ra prepared to leave Sir Gerith's office, filled with a newfound resolve, Ray turned back, locking eyes with the knight. "We will make it through the trials," he stated, not as a boast but as a promise to themselves and to the legacy they hoped to uphold. Sir Gerith, observing the determination in Ray's eyes, nodded solemnly. "You have a month to prepare. Use it wisely," he advised, emphasizing the fleeting nature of time and the importance of their upcoming challenge.

Ra, seizing the moment, voiced a concern that had been gnawing at him. "Sir Gerith, the attack on our home...it didn't feel random. It felt targeted, personal even." His voice carried the weight of their loss and the shadows of suspicion that had been growing in his mind.

Sir Gerith's expression darkened slightly, a hint of concern flashing across his features. "You're not alone in this," he began, his tone grave. "There have been other incidents, other families targeted. It seems there's a pattern emerging, one that we're still trying to understand."

The revelation sent a chill down Ra's spine, the implication that their suffering was part of a larger, darker scheme unsettling him deeply. "Other brothers?" he inquired, seeking clarity amidst the growing storm of questions.

"Yes, other siblings in the area have been attacked, homes burned, lives threatened. It's becoming increasingly clear that these are not isolated incidents. We're doing everything we can to investigate, to bring those responsible to justice," Sir Gerith assured them, his commitment to their safety and to the security of Alleria evident in his resolve.

As they left the office, the weight of Sir Gerith's words hung heavily between them. The path ahead was not just about the trials or becoming knights; it was also about uncovering the truth behind the attacks, about understanding the enemy that seemed intent on engulfing their lives.

As they left the Barracks, Ray and Ra meandered through the busy market streets, their conversation light but focused. Suddenly, Ray halted and spoke directly into the crowd, "La'ru, you might as well come out. We've been aware of you skulking around since we left." Almost instantly, a figure with striking maroon-red hair stepped from the shadows, a sheepish grin spreading across her face.

La'ru approached them, her expression a mix of surprise and respect. "Well, I see my little lesson in vigilance paid off," she said, referring to her earlier theft of Ray's pendant,a move that had sharpened their senses to their surroundings.

Ra joined in with a chuckle, "Yeah, getting pickpocketed by you was lesson number one in staying alert. Seems like we passed the test. I hope the next lesson doesn't involve stealing or dark magic users." His tone was light, the banter between them easy and familiar, reflecting the depth of their shared experiences.

Their playful exchange continued as they navigated their way back to the temple. La'ru teased, "I'll need to be sneakier next time. Can't have you two catching me so easily." Her voice carried a playful challenge, acknowledging their growth.

Ray replied with a smirk, "Next time, try to be as quiet as a whisper and as invisible as the air itself. We'll be ready." He said with a chuckle.

Their journey back was filled with laughter and light-hearted jokes, a welcome distraction from the challenges they had faced. It was La'ru's cunning theft that had inadvertently taught Ray and Ra a valuable lesson in vigilance,a lesson that had now become a shared joke among them.
