Chereads / Ultimus Custos (The Last Guardian) / Chapter 12 - Chapter 11

Chapter 12 - Chapter 11

James stormed out of the interrogation room into the main hall where most of the cops were busy carrying out their duties. His face showed anger that was trying so hard to erupt like a volcano and he was trying his possible best to keep it locked up.

"Okay, can someone tell me what the hell happened in there?" He barked when he got to the hall.

No replies. Everyone was dead silent. No one seems to know what was going on, so they were all lost.

"Don't tell me a murder took place in SCPD and no one is aware" Mr. Mccarthy said on getting to the scene. His face showed a mixture of anger and frustration. 'How could this happen right under his nose?' He thought while pacing restlessly.

Clara was silently observing James. She's getting confused by his reaction. She didn't know if he was just acting it all up or he was... 'No, he's the one. He did it she thought as her expression changed into a frown.

"What, you're all dumb now?" Mr. McCarthy yelled. The silence was annoying.

"No sir, we just don't know what's going on" a cop replied.

"Oh really?" Mr. McCarthy asked drawing close to him, "you don't know what's going on?" His breath harsh and his face mean.

"I'm sorry sir... It's just... I... I"

"Fine!" He said turning, with his hands on his waist in frustration. "You wanna know what happened?" Mr. McCarthy asked looking at their faces.

"Well, a murder happened. A bloody-messy murder happened on your damn watch!" He yelled banging the desk closest to him with his fist, turning to face detective James and Clara.

"Where's the detective?" He asked Clara as detective James was nowhere to be found. A frown broke across Clara's face.

Miss Brentwood was just rounding up her History lesson when a scream broke out. It was the students. The whole class including Miss Brentwood rushed out of the classroom to check the cause of the uproar.

A small crowd of students had gathered down the stairway, trying to revive one of the female senior students. The students are trying their best, but it's not working. Her head was bleeding with her eyes closed, she wasn't moving at all.

"Oh my God, Chloe!" Trey exclaimed. He knew the girl, she was the first person to talk to him when he got to the school, even though she was one class ahead of him.

"What happened?" He asked those around, squats beside her, with his heart beating hard against its ribcage.

"She tripped and fell down the stairway" another girl replied.

"C'mon Chloe, open your eyes," he said shaking her roughly. "You can't just die," he said still shaking her.

"She's dead," a male senior student said with a shaky voice. Trey recognized the voice. It was Trevor, Chloe's boyfriend. He was fighting hard to keep back the tears from rolling down his cheek. This broke Trey's heart as he felt his pain. Chloe was his friend too, and he knows how hard it is to lose a loved one.

The pain of watching your loved one die is something more excruciating than death itself. He didn't know when tears rolled down his cheek. He left her side as Trevor took his position.

"Please Chloe, open your eyes" he sobbed as the tears he'd been holding off forced themselves out.

Trey wiped his eyes with the back of his palm as he watched Trevor's grief. He couldn't take it anymore, so he turned to leave, but couldn't find himself leaving. He couldn't move his legs as his whole body seems not to listen to his command. Everything was in slow motion, including what everyone was saying. Their voices echoed in his ears but he was nervous. His eyes locked with that of Miss Brentwood and he didn't seem to know why she was staring at him. He felt a chilled sensation as he could almost hear his breathing exercise.

The pendant which had been attached to a necklace on his neck glowed and he suddenly felt like he no longer have control over his body. He turned to look at Chloe's corpse as he suddenly felt a new energy welling inside of him. He felt as if there was something inside him that wants to come out, but he didn't know what it was.

Everything around Miss Brentwood was in slow motion as she observed Trey closely. She observed his nervousness and she needs no one to tell her that something is up. She concentrated more as her eyes changed to pure black, plunging her into the spiritual realm. She saw Trey's pendant glow the usual green light as she took a step forward but stopped when something strange happened.

Trey was suddenly surrounded by the green light making it look more like flames. She listened to his heartbeat but was taken aback when she heard two hearts beating instead of one. She could feel a powerful presence erupting from Trey's position as she took a step back. She couldn't tear her face off him, she couldn't miss any part of this.

Trey suddenly split into two as the other part moved with super speed to were Chloe's lifeless body lay, leaving a trail of green flames behind him. She suddenly became overwhelmed with fear. She was so scared that she felt like running away from the scene. The only thing stopping her right now is the urge to know what's going on.

The Trey that came out squatted beside Chloe and touched her head as a bright light glowed around her body.

"What's happening?" She said to herself as the other Trey suddenly got up and with the speed of lightning was standing right in her face, but it was no longer Trey when he got to her. It was someone she had seen before, an old man. She knew him, she was certain. She had seen the face before, but she was finding it difficult to remember where or when.

"I know you didn't do this," he said staring into her face as she was too overwhelmed with fear to speak or move.

"He did," he said, gesturing down the hallway as she saw the bony structure of a faceless man in black suit and tie.

"You're here for the stone," he said, "for your selfish reasons I presume" he added.

"You don't seem to remember me, do you?" He asked as she kept looking into his eyes as if she was spelled.

"We met centuries ago, you came with Cerberus, remember?" That was when her memories came rushing back. 'The first guardian?" She mumbled as he smiled.

"You can't harm him," he gestured towards Trey. "You can't touch a hair on his head or should I say wouldn't?" He asked with all seriousness.

"It's better if the stone falls in your hands than in theirs," he said as her eyes suddenly widened. "Don't be surprised, I know of your plans, I know you're trying to protect, but it's not in your nature to do so. It's not part of your mission, and it might not end well for you" he said, "especially when he's around, since you're both looking for the same thing".

Miss Brentwood couldn't say anything, she just stared at him in disbelief. No one noticed what was going on, as she was a few minutes behind in the spirit realm.

" I'll always stay and protect him from danger," he said as his eyes flashed green. "And I mean it," he said as she suddenly came back to reality.

She was shaken up so much that she couldn't move or speak. No one knows where the first guardian ended up centuries ago. They didn't know if he died or not, he just vanished. And now, he can take control of Trey's body whenever he wants.

"I should have known," she said, trying to put the pieces together. She had smelled his blood when she encountered Trey for the first time in his dream. She didn't believe it at first, but with this, it was real.

Chloe gasped out as she opened her eyes, panting heavily at the same time Trey snapped out of whatever trance he'd been in. It was like a miracle to everyone.

"What happened to me?" She asked as she stared at the faces of the students gathered around her.

"Oh my God, you're alive," Trey said and rushed over to assist Trevor in sitting her up.

"What do you mean by I am alive, did I die?" She was lost.

"No, no... We... We thought you died" Trevor said sniffing as she turned to look at his face.

"You've been crying," she said observing him for a moment.

"You passed out, Chloe, you passed out," Mia said, "Everyone was worried" she added with a long face.

"You tripped and fell off the stairs" Trey added.

"Yeah, I did" she replied. She seems to remember everything now as her memories came rushing back.

"Someone pushed me"

"What?!" Trey was shocked, "why would anyone want to do that to you?" Trevor asked, curiosity taking over him.

"Did you know who the person is, like, did you see his face?" Trey asked.

"No, I didn't see his face" she replied, "he has no face" Trey was taken aback. He looked in the direction Miss Brentwood was standing before, but she was gone.
