Chapter 1 - The Awakening

The street was as silent as a graveyard, with the chirping of insects and crickets renting the air. And oh, the crackling sound of electricity from a broken electric pole nearby also adds to the melody. Smoke was emitting from different parts of the city. Skyscrapers could be seen with half of their structure torn off.

The burnt smell of flesh, mixed with the odor of gasoline and burning rubbers that already substitute the smell of barbeques and sweet-smelling vodkas were everywhere.

Limbless bodies lay all over the floor with some of them having their heads decapitated from their bodies. A closer look at them makes their camouflage khaki which has been stained with all sorts of debris more visible to the eyes. The city no doubt is in a time of war.

A figure with the shape of a female could be seen walking amongst the bodies that lay lifeless all over the place. On her right hand was a flaming torch which illuminated her appearance as she came out of the dark. Her long hair overflowing her shoulders; is as dark as night itself, with her enticing green eyes sparkling in the darkness of the night. She is putting on a red colored robe that covers most of her body, with a green and mean-looking snake wrapped around her, showing its fangs and tongue as it hissed from time to time.

A wounded soldier was among the ruins. He couldn't move because of the big slab of concrete on his legs, it has him pinned down and all he could do is just wince in pain while struggling to free himself. He was still struggling with the slab when he saw the figure approaching him. Looking to his left, his eyes fell on the Beretta lying close to him as he picks it up, pointing it at the figure approaching him.

"Stand back," he said nervously, trying to hide his fears as the figure kept a straight face, not minding the threat in his voice.

"Pathetic mortals," she said on getting to where he lay with the weapon ready to fire.

"Don't come any closer" he warned, he was nervous as he aimed the gun in between her eyes.

"Den the mátheis, étsi?" She said in greek.

The soldier has a confused look on his face, "What are you saying?".

"You're all the same" she replied bending low, so her face could be aligned with his.

He tried to fire his weapon, but he couldn't as his fingers suddenly went numb. He couldn't move any part of his body, except his head which was facing the lady directly.

"You tried to kill me, don't you?" She said in her greek accent with an evil smile on her face. "I can't die. I'm not from your world" she said mockingly into his face.

Chuckling, he look into her green eyes as the countenance on his face suddenly became mean.

"Go fvck yourself!" He said, spitting into her eyes.

This seems to anger her, as she rises to her full 5 feet and 9 inches height, concentrating on his body as an unseen force engulfs him, lifting him into the air so that he dangled helplessly as he tried to fight back.

"I tried to be reasonable, but now you've kindled my anger," she said as the flame on her torch turned to green and the brightness of her eyes increased.

"Now, I'll take your soul," she said stretching forth her hand as he gasped all of a sudden. Black smoke could be seen coming out of his eyes, nostrils, and mouth going straight into her outstretched hand.

There was lightning as he kept struggling with his breath until he couldn't move anymore. Her eyes became normal again with his body falling with a thud.

The coffee shop was closed already, but the teen kept knocking non-stop, not minding the tag on the door which says "CLOSED". He look nervous like someone in danger as he kept hitting the glass door with his fist. He doesn't look like someone ready to go away if the door didn't open up.

He looked back occasionally with sweat on his forehead. His black hair was wet with perspiration and a close look at him showed his clothes were also wet.

He peered into the coffee shop which had been cleaned and arranged in preparation for the next day's work. The iron burglar proof inside was also locked with a big padlock.

"Shit, shit, shit!" He cursed as he searched his pocket for his phone. It was gone, then he remembered. It fell from his grip when he jumped the car's bonnet a few minutes ago.

He has bruises on his head and arm. There were scratches on his elbow, but he doesn't seem to feel all of that at the moment. He tries to steady his breath, but he just can't.

"Aunt Lucy!" he called, but his voice can't be heard because of the type of security doors used in securing the coffee shop. It was a soundproof glass.

He ran over to a nearby pillar ringing the bell on it. He looks up at the camera, ringing the bell and calling the name he called earlier, occasionally looking back again to see if they're closing in on him. His heart sank as he saw those red horrible eyes emerging from the darkness. He's dead.

The cafe owner, a young lady, dressed in black bum shorts and a white sleeveless top could be seen cross-checking her security systems. The computers in the control room are too much to serve as security for a coffee shop.

She was surrounded by computers as she kicked against one of the desks, propelling the chair she was sitting on in the opposite direction with the aid of the wheels. She grabbed the steaming cup of coffee on the desk and took a sip from it while working with her left hand on the keyboard as the surveillance camera which was tagged "CAM 5" came online.

Satisfied, she stood up from the chair, revealing the silver Glock tucked in her waistband looking all around her once again as all the security cameras were now live. She smiled in satisfaction. She made to take the last sip from her cup before leaving the room when an image from one of the cameras caught her attention. She saw those black figures that almost look like night itself, if not for their red eyes crawling from across the street, it was CAM 8.

She looked at CAM 2, there were just 4 red eyes, she frowned. That was not supposed to happen. What's causing the attraction from the street?

She looked at CAM 4, clear. CAM 6 was also clear. She narrowed her eyes when she saw the image on CAM 1.

"Trey?!" She said in disbelief, as she stared at the image of the teen boy jumping and ringing the bell, at the same time saying something inaudible. She has turned off the sound systems because of her husband, so she could neither hear what he was saying nor hear the ringing bell.

She looks back at the images from CAM 8, lining them back to CAM 1, trying to put the pieces together.

"Holy motherfvcker!" She cusses as her head process what's going on.

The boy seeing he was not escaping this time grabbed a nearby rod and took a fighting stance. Although he knew it would be suicide to take on them with the rod, he wouldn't go down without a fight.

The creatures kept growling as they move cautiously toward him. Their gaze was fixed on him as they seize up their prey with their red eyes which portrayed death or hell, whichever you could think of.

Trey took a deep-shaky breath, and clutch the rod tightly, fixing his eyes on the one closest to him. His eyes watched every one of its movements as it got down on all fours, ready to attack.

"Get down!" He heard a feminine voice say just as the beast dive straight at him. He did as he was told and a loud sound could be heard as the force of the shotgun pushed it back, desecrating its body.

The rest of the beasts now fully aware of the new threat snared viciously at her, revealing their sharp fangs as they seem ready to devour her flesh.

"Aunt Lucy," the boy said, making it sound more like a question.

"Happy to see me?" She asked with a smile.

"Couldn't be happier" he replied as the charging growls of the beasts could be heard.

"Go, take the back exit into the building. It's opened" she said, blasting off the head of the beast that took the first dive.

She slides underneath the arm of another that tries to slash her face with its claws, shooting its stomach as flames devour his body, desecrating it immediately. She feels a sharp pain in her left hand and a glance makes her realize it was a slash from one of the beasts- Nightwalkers. They only attack at night because of their shadow forms, for them to blend with the darkness.

The Night Walker that slashed her hand with its claws grabbed her shoulder, but she hit its face with the butt of her shotgun. It stagger backward and was about to get up again when she fired a shot at its head. She heard a snare nearby and not even bothering to look at it, she released two successful shots at it. She wanted to fire a third shot at another, but her gun clicked empty. She didn't have enough time to reload it with shells. Holding the pump's muzzle, she swings it with so much force that it connects with the jaw of the walker that dives at her, ramming it against a nearby vehicle. There was a loud blaring sound as the security system of the car was activated.

Distracted by the sound, she didn't realize that two of the walkers were already crawling behind her. One of them grabbed her leg, flinging her towards another walker. It hit her with its head making her crash roughly on the tarred floor.

She raises her head, shaking it to clear her sight. Her head was pounding so badly and her vision was blurred for a few seconds. She shook her head the second time again, trying to clear it and get up on her feet when another walker kick her with so much force that she crashed against another vehicle.

She let out a cuss word, spitting out the blood she tastes in her mouth.

"I'm done with this" she cursed under her breath. She reached out for the rod attached to the belt on her hip. Pushing a button on it, a ray of thin blue light forming the shape of a sword's blade appeared on it. The blue light soon fades out, leaving a shining silver sword in its place.

The beasts snarled at her on seeing the weapon. They begin to circle her with their gaze fixed on her as they continue snarling viciously. They stopped circling all of a sudden as Mrs. Smith took a fighting stance.

"Bring it on" she dared with a smirk on her face...
