Chereads / Blue blooded man / Chapter 18 - Raiding the Tiger's Den

Chapter 18 - Raiding the Tiger's Den

I leaped up again and saw the car come to a halt, two burly men charging towards me.

As they came closer, they kept firing their pistols at me incessantly. One bullet grazed my waist, causing a sharp pain.

I dodged constantly, making it difficult for the two men to aim, thus saving my life. I retreated into an empty house, and to my surprise, the two men followed me inside.

Chasing after the car that took Fang Tian was now hopeless. I had to deal with these two men first. I could already guess their origins; they must be members of the Moon God Society.

I kept backing away into the empty house until I reached the closet door leading to the cellar.

The room was pitch dark as the lights were already out. I hid beside the door, planning to slip into the cellar when the two men entered. In the cellar, amidst the corpses, I could lie down, indistinguishable from the dead until they came to inspect, giving me a chance.

I held my breath, waiting silently, listening to the footsteps of the two men getting closer.

Suddenly, they stopped, and one said, "Let's not pursue further. Let's go back." The other replied, "How can we? The Elder commanded that no one should be left alive; this can't leak out."

When the other man mentioned the Elder's command, I was sure they were indeed criminals of the Moon God Society. The Moon God Society was being incredibly brazen!

Then one said, "Let's split up and search."

The other cautioned, "Be careful, that person is very agile. It might be the same person who escaped from headquarters last time, the Chinese Wesley." The other seemed surprised, "If it's him, let's leave quickly, Big Brother."

The other one snorted, "If we kill Wesley, we'll all be promoted!" The reluctant one agreed, and their footsteps resumed. Listening to their conversation, I understood a bit of what happened at the Moon God Society headquarters after I left. They must have realized they had the wrong person; I wasn't the "flying" extraterrestrial they believed me to be.

They probably also discovered my identity and finally found Fang Tian and took him away.

In this situation, Fang Tian's safety wasn't a major concern because the Moon God Society wouldn't harm him since they wanted him to "fly" at the believers' grand assembly.

Although things were still heavily stacked against me, they were slowly becoming clearer. I understood Fang Tian's background, and the Seven Gentlemen's Party, who once opposed us, had withdrawn from the fight.

Now, our only competitor was the Moon God Society.

Fighting against the Moon God Society wasn't easy, but it was better than not knowing who our enemies were.

Thinking about this, I suddenly remembered Kimura Noboru, casting a shadow over my heart.

Because regardless of anything, Kimura Noboru's death had nothing to do with the Moon God Society. According to Fang Tian, it was something about "huoke" (huò ké yī dú jiān). However, I didn't know what those five words meant. Fang Tian intended to explain it to me, but he didn't get the chance.

Thinking about it, I felt that it might be even more challenging to deal with than the Moon God Society. But since it was still unknown, there was no need to dwell on it.

As I thought, I kept an eye on the movements of the two men.

I heard one of the men gradually approaching the room where I was hiding. Finally, with a loud bang, he kicked open the door. I was just three steps away from him, but because the room was so dark, he didn't see me.

But I could see him. I watched as he took step after step towards me.

When he had taken three steps, he seemed to realize someone was in front of him. He abruptly stopped and raised his gun, but by then, I had pounced like a leopard, silently grabbing his throat. His gun fell to the ground as he desperately tried to pry my hands away, his eyes bulging in fear.

I knew the Moon God Society's power was vast, and these henchmen were partly responsible, so I showed no mercy. I tightened my grip until his trachea made a "crack" sound, snapping, and his head slumped backward.

I released his body, picked up the gun, and kicked his corpse down into the cellar with a loud thud. Immediately, someone asked, "What happened, Brother?"

I realized the person who had just died in my hands was the leader who wanted to kill me. I spoke in a hoarse voice, vaguely calling out, "Come quickly." Swift footsteps approached, and as a man rushed in, I raised my knee, hitting him in the tailbone. He bent backward, and I grabbed his neck with my arm, aiming the gun at the center of his eyes, saying, "Do you want to meet your leader?"

The man stuttered, "N-no... no..."

He repeated the word "no" three times, trembling, almost collapsing. I wrested the gun from his hand, about to fall to the ground, and released his grip, saying, "Sit down!"

The man fell to the ground, and I sneered, "Do you know who I am?"

The man said, "Y-you... you're Wesley?"

I said, "That's right, I am Wesley." The man's body trembled, and he let out a long sigh, closing his eyes. I sternly asked, "What are you doing? Do you think I will kill you?"

The man opened his eyes again, showing an incredulous expression, and said, "You... you... can you spare me?"

I tossed the pistol in my hand and said, "Where were you planning to take Fang Tian?" The man replied, "To the headquarters by the seaside." I asked, "Is it the same place I visited?"

He replied, "Yes." I continued, "What about the metal box you took from here?" The man suddenly fell silent. I sneered, "I guess you don't want my forgiveness anymore."

With a sigh, he said, "It was in the trunk of the car that left just now. It's also headed to the seaside headquarters."

I understood why Fang Tian's brainwaves could detect the metal box nearby but couldn't pinpoint its exact location. The car was moving, so he couldn't determine it. I asked one last question, "What about Sakaki Kisako?" The man shook his head, "I don't know." I grunted, and he hastily added, "I'm just a thug; I don't know about confidential matters."

I looked at him, pondering. Since he had told me the truth, I should let him go. However, if I let him go, the Moon God Society would immediately know their secrets had leaked. If they just reinforced the headquarters, it would be manageable, but if they changed the location of the metal box and Fang Tian, it would be troublesome.

Shouldn't I just kill him?

I hesitated, and the man looked at me like a condemned prisoner, his face pale. After a while, he spoke first, "I... will never speak of our encounter."

I asked, "How can I trust you?"

He replied, "You can trust me because if I leak the secrets, I'll be burned alive."

I shuddered at his words, removed the bullets from his pistol, and returned the gun to him. I kept the other pistol. Normally, I wouldn't carry modern weapons, but the situation was too dangerous. If I didn't carry a gun, I might die at any moment!

In a deep voice, I said, "Go."

He sprang up as if granted clemency and rushed out. I heard his footsteps leaving the house, then climbed out the window at the back, leading to an alley.

I traversed the alley and reached the nearest police post. Two officers looked at me strangely. I told them I was from the International Police Force and needed to use the phone at the post. The credentials Nelson gave me worked wonders, and the officers immediately complied.

I dialed the number Nelson had given me when we parted ways. I didn't know where it led, but I knew it would reach Nelson.

The phone rang, and before long, Nelson's voice came through, "Hello?"

I immediately said, "Old friend, there's no need to mobilize troops anymore; I have a lead."

Nelson sounded extremely excited, "Really?" I said, "Where are you? Get ready with a speedboat, a fast car, and two powerful weapons. I'll meet you."

Nelson asked, "Is it the Moon God Society?"

I replied, "Yes, they've taken Fang Tian too. I'll tell you the details when we meet." After a brief pause, Nelson said, "Okay, I'll wait for you at the entrance of Police Dormitory Number Seven. Everything will be ready when you arrive."

I hung up the phone, borrowed a motorcycle from the officers without much ado, and sped off. Eight minutes later, I arrived at our meeting point. Nelson was standing beside a very old-looking car, rubbing his hands together.

The car looked like junk on the outside, but experienced eyes could tell it was a specially fitted fast car.

I didn't say anything, just opened the door and got in the driver's seat. Nelson joined me, asking, "Don't you want to bring more people?"

I smiled bitterly, "No matter how many people, they won't outnumber the Moon God Society. It's better to have fewer." Nelson asked, "What's your plan?"

I replied, "A car took Fang Tian, and the metal box is in the trunk."

As I said this, our car had already shot forward like an arrow. I continued, "I hope we can catch up with that car now; it would make things much easier."

Nelson asked, "What if we can't catch up with the car?" I said, "If we can't catch the car, we'll have to head to the Moon God Society headquarters from the sea." Nelson remained silent, and I recounted the events of Fang Tian's abduction. Nelson retrieved two guns from under the car seat. The guns looked very peculiar, almost square in shape, ten centimeters in length and width, with short barrels and handles. I reached out and took one of the guns, feeling its weight in my hand.

Nelson said, "Each gun has one hundred and twenty rounds. Although the bullets are few, they cause a small explosion upon hitting the target, with considerable lethality."

I was surprised, "Can they be fired in succession?"

Nelson replied, "Yes, you can fire all one hundred and twenty rounds within a minute!"

I couldn't help but sigh. The advancement of weapons is getting more and more extreme. The fact that a weapon with such power can be carried by an individual shows why Chinese martial arts are declining. What can a person with high proficiency in Chinese martial arts do when faced with a new type of handgun that can fire one hundred and twenty rounds in succession?

(1986 note: This kind of weapon was just the author's imagination at the time, but its appearance and performance are remarkably similar to today's M15 and M16 automatic rifles, which is quite interesting.)

Mr. Nelson said, "But this type of gun has a drawback, and that is the complex procedure for loading bullets. It's not easy to complete in a very short time."

I shrugged and said, "With one hundred and twenty rounds of ammunition, isn't that enough?"

Mr. Nelson added, "Don't forget, each bullet will explode upon impact, causing considerable damage!"

I didn't say much more. Mr. Nelson, being a Westerner, seemed pleased with the advancement of weapons. But as an Easterner, I felt an indescribable discomfort in my heart! Especially when I thought about having to use this new type of weapon, the unease in my heart grew even stronger.

I drove the car very fast. At a fork in the road, two motorcycles emerged from the intersection and followed closely behind our car. They were police patrol cars.

However, the car we were driving now was specially equipped with the performance of a racing car. I quickly left the two police patrol cars far behind, and they couldn't catch up with us anymore.

Before long, we had left the city of Tokyo.

The last time I escaped from the Moon God Society headquarters, I had already identified the location of their headquarters. Therefore, as soon as we left the city, I could drive on the highway. I chose the route along the seaside because I believed that the car carrying Fang Tian and the metal box would also take this road.

Although the Moon God Society was powerful, many things had to be kept under wraps. The route from the seaside to the Moon God Society headquarters was not only faster but also more concealed.

Of course, I also knew that the hope of catching up with that car on the road was very slim. Because too much time had passed, the Moon God Society's car had surpassed us by a lot. But I hoped that we could intercept the speedboat sent by the Moon God Society on the sea.

If this hope couldn't be fulfilled, then we would have to take the risk and explore the Moon God Society headquarters.

There weren't many cars on the highway, and suddenly, it started snowing heavily, making the road very slippery.

Our car was traveling so fast that it almost seemed to fly over the road. The tires rubbing against the road surface made a thrilling "sizzle" sound.

Mr. Nelson leisurely took out his pipe, lit it, took a few puffs, then lit a cigarette and handed it to me, saying, "Perhaps I shouldn't ask, but I still want to know."

As he spoke, he looked at me. Before he finished, I interrupted and said, "What kind of person is Fang Tian?"

Mr. Nelson smiled and said, "That's the question."

I sighed and said, "You should know that you are my best friend, so I promised not to disclose their secrets, and you shouldn't push me."

Mr. Nelson nodded, "You're right, but it's a pity that my curiosity will never be satisfied." I said, "That's not necessarily true. After a while, I'll be able to explain everything to you in detail."

Mr. Nelson seemed skeptical, "Really?"

I involuntarily looked up. I wanted to see the sky. After Fang Tian returned to Saturn, I could naturally explain everything to Mr. Nelson. But as I looked up, the roof of the car blocked my view. Also, because of my movement, the car slid to the side, and if Mr. Nelson hadn't immediately turned the steering wheel, our car would have crashed into the roadside billboard!

I slowly reduced the speed, and the car stopped. I sighed, and Mr. Nelson said, "How about I drive?"

I smiled and said, "That's not necessary. I promised to satisfy your curiosity, and I won't break my word; it's just a matter of time." Mr. Nelson said, "I naturally believe you."

I stepped on the gas again, and the car sped forward once more. As we headed towards the seaside, there were fewer cars on the road, and the rain turned into a heavy snowfall. I had to slow down the car as the visibility ahead became very blurry.

After a while, the snowfall became even heavier, and the visibility ahead was extremely poor. Mr. Nelson kept instructing me to drive carefully, and I tried my best to keep the car stable, limiting the speed to the point where it wouldn't overturn.

About half an hour later, I looked ahead and vaguely saw what seemed to be a car speeding ahead. But because the snow was getting thicker, I couldn't be sure if there was a car ahead.

I asked Mr. Nelson, "How fast is that car going?"

Nelson said, "We are gradually getting closer to it, but its speed won't be much slower than ours."

I took a deep breath and said, "Think about it. In such heavy snow, what kind of vehicle could be speeding almost as fast as us on such a remote road?"

Nelson asked, "Are you suggesting that it's the vehicle we're tracking?"

I replied, "I need to speed up to catch up and see." Nelson didn't say anything, he just rolled down the window, and the heavy snow immediately rushed in.

Before I could ask him what he was doing, I saw him holding a gun in his right hand, already extending it outside the window. I asked, "Are you trying to force that car to stop?" Nelson said, "If possible, I want to shoot the rear tire of the car ahead."

I gradually increased the speed. The car on the road was bouncing like a small boat in a storm, ready to flip over at any moment.

Our risky move was worth it. On the radar explorer's fluorescent panel, I saw that we were gradually getting closer to that car.

Finally, even without relying on the radar explorer, I could see the car clearly in the heavy snow.

When I couldn't see the car clearly, how I wished it was the car that took Fang Tian away!

But when I could vaguely see the shape of the car ahead, I was disappointed. The car was green, not the black RV that took Fang Tian away.

Just as I was about to speak up to stop Mr. Nelson, a gunshot rang out!

I was suddenly shocked because the car ahead was driving at such a speed. If Mr. Nelson's bullet hit the rear tire of the car, it would surely cause the car to roll violently on the road. If that wasn't the Moon God Society's car, it would mean harming innocent people.

However, as soon as this thought crossed my mind, I saw the green car ahead shoot forward like an arrow.

And our car suddenly jumped up like a wild horse breaking free from its reins.

In that moment, I truly felt like we were soaring through the clouds!

It was also in that moment that I realized the gunshot just now didn't come from Mr. Nelson's gun, but from the car ahead. Our car had been hit.

The four wheels of our car had left the ground. In such a situation, apart from remaining calm, I had no other choice. What amazed me about Mr. Nelson was that even while our car was airborne, he managed to fire four shots ahead!

He fired four shots in just half a second.

But within that second, the changes were tremendous. After our car took off, it suddenly flipped over, and I felt a violent shockwave.

The shockwave didn't stop all at once but continued for two or three times.

You can imagine, our car took off, landed, and bounced up two or three times! In that moment, almost every cell in my body was vibrating, and the thunderous roar in my ears made me believe it was caused by a car flipping over.

I managed to pull Mr. Nelson over with my arm to protect his head, while I tightly tucked my head against the car mat.

After the intense shaking passed, I regained my composure.

First, I confirmed that I hadn't died. Then, I even felt fortunate that I hadn't been injured. It was then that I heard Mr. Nelson's protest, "Hey, you're suffocating me!"

This made me know that Mr. Nelson had also miraculously survived. We both fell together on the roof of the car, as the car had flipped over. The car's mechanics were incredibly sturdy; although the car had flipped, I could still hear the sound of the four wheels turning.

Mr. Nelson struggled to stand up and said, "Thank you, I'm not hurt." He looked outward and said, "I think I hit it!"

I also said, "Yeah, the kind of loud noise we just heard doesn't seem like something a car flipping over alone would make."

As I spoke, I crawled out through the window that was opened. Snowflakes hit me in the face, and the cold wind pierced my bones. As soon as we got out of the car, we immediately saw the green car, about twenty meters ahead, overturned in the snowdrift.

Mr. Nelson exclaimed, "I did hit it!"

As he shouted, he ran forward, and I rushed over and pulled him back because if we could survive a car rollover, the occupants of that car could too. Running forward like that would undoubtedly make us easy targets. When I pulled Mr. Nelson, he immediately lay down.

I also followed suit and lay down. The two of us, like soldiers attacking a fortress, crawled forward on the ground. However, as we gradually approached the car, we stood up.

The extent of the damage to the car was worse than we had imagined. It was evident that only one of Mr. Nelson's four shots had hit.

But even that shot had completely destroyed one of the car's rear wheels. Inside the driver's seat, a person lay sideways, half of the steering wheel stuck into their chest. That person was undoubtedly dead.

Apart from him, there was no one else in the car.

Mr. Nelson leaped forward and kicked open the already cracked luggage compartment lid. The car's trunk was specially made, with a large capacity, and after kicking open the trunk lid, we saw the hard metal box!

Both Nelson and I cheered at the same time!

The size of the box and the distinctive silver-white glow of the new alloy assured us that it was the same hard metal box we had handled before, the one that had been taken from us twice, the box containing the "extraterrestrial" solar system navigation device!

At the same time, we both remembered another question: Where was Fang Tian?

Mr. Nelson stepped forward, lifted the driver out of the car, but the driver was already dead and couldn't answer our question. We exchanged glances and quickly recounted what had just happened.

We both felt that if the people escorting Fang Tian were smart and uninjured, they had enough time to take Fang Tian away before we crawled out of the overturned car.

Of course, even if they left, they wouldn't go too far!

Nelson and I hardly spoke a word, but our actions were consistent. We both moved the hard metal box to our own car and then together pushed the overturned car back onto its wheels.

Mr. Nelson quickly checked and said, "The radar tracker is damaged, but the car is fine, and even the wireless phone still works."

I said only one sentence, "Hurry to find Fang Tian."

Mr. Nelson thought for a moment and said, "If we can't track down Fang Tian and need to go to the headquarters of the Moon God Society, should we also take this box with us?"

Before Nelson mentioned it, I hadn't thought about it.

I hesitated and said, "What do you mean?"

Nelson said, "We need to divide our work. One person will track Fang Tian, and the other will take this box and leave first, returning to downtown Tokyo for safety."

I immediately said, "Then I'll go after Fang Tian."

Mr. Nelson looked somewhat worried, like an elder watching a younger one about to embark on a journey. I smiled and said, "Don't you believe in my abilities?"

Mr. Nelson reluctantly smiled and said, "Good luck."

He got back into the car and used the wireless phone to instruct his subordinates to immediately send a car to pick up the hard metal box.

I wasn't very comfortable leaving Mr. Nelson alone with the box on such a remote road, so I ignored his protests and moved the box to a pile of rubble by the roadside, making Nelson squat behind it.

That way, he had the rubble behind him, the hard metal box in front of him, and the powerful new gun in his hand. His subordinates could arrive immediately, so even if enemies attacked, he wouldn't have to fear.

I ran to the car, got in, and waved to Mr. Nelson. The heavy snow continued to fall, and I saw him waving back at me. I stepped on the gas, and the car roared forward again.

I couldn't drive too fast because the person taking Fang Tian might be on foot. If I drove too fast, it would be difficult to catch up. As I drove, I carefully scanned the surroundings. Although there were some houses along the road, they were far from the road, and smart people wouldn't seek refuge so far away.

The snow fell heavily at times, and as far as I could see, there was no one.

I looked at the road signs. I had already driven fifteen kilometers and still hadn't seen anyone. I felt something was very strange. Either Fang Tian wasn't on that car at all, or the person taking Fang Tian had left with another car. Unfortunately, I couldn't confirm either point because the snow continued to fall, covering any tire tracks.

As I drove forward, I quickly turned my thoughts. But I couldn't figure out why Fang Tian was nowhere to be seen. I gritted my teeth, stepped on the gas, and increased the speed of the car. I had decided that no matter what, I would go to the headquarters of the Moon God Society first!

Because Fang Tian was always going to be taken to the headquarters of the Moon God Society, why bother worrying halfway?

Before long, the car drove into a small town, and there was no road ahead.

It was a very small town, and if it weren't for a large-scale canned fish processing factory, the town would have ceased to exist long ago. I drove into the town and stopped at the end of the road.

As I opened the car door, two Japanese men ran towards me.

Nelson had arranged for personnel to meet me, they were undoubtedly his subordinates.

They both spoke fluent English and said, "We recognize this car, is it from 1940?"

It was the pre-arranged code, and I said, "No, it's from 1946." The two of them said again, "September 1946?" I smiled and said, "No, November."

They lowered their voices and asked, "Is there only you?"

I nodded and said, "Yes, Mr. Nelson couldn't make it because of something urgent."

The two men said, "How about having a drink first?"

As they spoke, they looked around, and I realized that even in this seemingly calm town, there might be unrest. I quickly said, "Do we have enough time?" The two men smiled, and the older one said, "We've prepared a speedboat."

My heart stirred, and I followed the two of them into a small hotel. After two shots of strong liquor, my whole body felt warm. Seeing no one around, I asked again, "Did anyone from the Moon God Society pass by just now?"

The older one replied, "Yes, three people in total, one of them seemed to be under their control."

I was greatly pleased and asked, "How did they come?"

The younger one said, "They came by a sports car."

At this point, I was sure that one of the three was Fang Tian. As for how they could obtain another sports car after the car crash, it seemed they had been prepared with a car to pick them up.

While I was happy, I couldn't help feeling anxious and said, "They've already left. Are we still drinking here?"

The two men laughed, each downed another shot, and then said, "Don't worry, their speedboat has been anchored at the seaside for a long time. We've done some tricks."

I smiled and asked, "Did you pour gasoline?" The older one said, "Adding gasoline is possible, but I drilled five small holes in their speedboat's fuel tank. After adding gas, it leaks out completely. Therefore, their speedboat has to stop and go!" I patted him heavily on the shoulder and said, "Great plan, but we need to hurry. If they arrive at the Moon God Society headquarters first, things will be much more complicated."

The two men stood up, grabbed their hats, and left the small hotel, heading towards the seaside where a speedboat was moored. I followed behind them and saw that the speedboat, in appearance, was also old and worn, like it was waiting to be scrapped. We got on board together, and the two men started the engine. The stern of the speedboat was equipped with four engines.

With a grinding sound, the speedboat shot forward like an arrow.

We didn't say anything to each other; I just took out the binoculars and looked out over the sea.

The snow had stopped, but the sky was still cloudy.

After looking for a while and finding nothing, I couldn't help but sigh.

One of the older men walked over to me and said, "Mr. Wei, are you saying that even if we catch up with them in such a situation, it will be difficult to take action?"

I couldn't help but secretly admire this person's wit. It was surprising how intelligent he was. It goes to show that one should not judge a book by its cover, as he appeared to be a simple farmer from the outside.

Since he was an international police officer, I had no need to hide my concerns, so I immediately said, "Yes."

The younger one laughed and said, "Don't worry, I painted a lot of luminous paint on the stern of their speedboat. Once we catch up, there will be no problem spotting it."

I couldn't help but give him a thumbs up and said, "Thoughtful!"

The younger one seemed very interested in me and said, "Compared to you, what are we?"

I couldn't help but feel apprehensive. Their actions were much more clever than mine, and they had done so much to uphold justice and order.

But I was just basking in undeserved fame and felt ashamed. So I quickly said, "Don't say that, you two. I'm just lucky." Before the two men could say anything else, I pointed forward and said, "Look!"

At this moment, the sea was pitch black.

The north wind howled, and the sea was not very calm. Our speedboat, because of its high speed, was relatively stable. Ahead, where I pointed, was a gloomy green light.

The green light swayed up and down with the sea. I immediately took out the binoculars.

Through the binoculars, the green light was clearer. It was emitted from the tail of a speedboat, which meant we had caught up with the speedboat that the Moon God Society had used to kidnap Fang Tian!

At this point, I felt that things had been too easy to succeed.

Because Mr. Nelson and I had no intention of confronting the Moon God Society head-on, as their power was too great. Going to the headquarters of the Moon God Society to cause trouble was a last resort.

Now that things could be resolved on the sea, it was naturally even better.
