Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 - Crashing my Dreams

The elevator doors slid open with a faint ding, and I stepped out into the sleek, modern headquarters of the office building. My eyes scanned the directory, locating the Gray Room on the sixth floor. My heart pounded with anxiety as I checked the time on my watch. I hurried down the hallway, my heels clicking on the marble floor.

Suddenly, I collided with a solid force, nearly losing my balance and spilling hot coffee all over myself. A sharp pain shot through my nose, and I winced as I looked up to see a man standing in front of me. He was tall and strikingly handsome, his expensive suit and shirt now stained with coffee. His cold gaze fell upon me, a mixture of annoyance and surprise evident on his face.

"Mr. Lowell!" A shrill voice rang out from behind me, and I cringed at the thought of facing my boss. I cursed inwardly, regretting my decision to stop for coffee, as I quickly apologized to the man in front of me. This was not how I wanted to start my day. At that moment, I would have gladly vanished into thin air or crawled into a hole to hide for the rest of my life.

However, since neither option was feasible, I could only think of one course of action when faced with the company owner I worked for, having just met him for the first time and made a complete mess. I had to apologize. "Mr. Lowell, I'm sorry. I was in a hurry, and I wasn't paying attention... The Gray Room... I didn't... I mean, I apologize," I stammered, my words faltering under embarrassment. As I stole a glimpse at the woman, presumably an employee of his, who had witnessed the entire calamity, I observed her frozen in shock. In my mind, I began to prepare for what came next; getting fired was imminent. I avoided meeting his gaze, and a cold, commanding voice pierced through my spine in the following oppressive silence. I sighed heavily and grabbed my purse, looking for a tissue to wipe off the mess. I was just one step closer to my dream job, but now all my wishes and hopes seemed to shatter before my eyes. But how had I gotten into this unfortunate mess?

I've always been intrigued by the economy, but the struggling state of my hometown and family has intensified my curiosity for the thriving city of Wolfsville. I long to unravel the secrets behind Wolfsville's and Lowell Enterprises' success and uncover possibilities for sustainable growth in impoverished areas. As I eagerly make my way to Lowell Enterprises headquarters today, I believe I am one step closer to fulfilling my aspirations. My alarm is set to go off at its usual time, but I find myself awake beforehand. The anticipation for today's visit kept me tossing and turning throughout the night, leaving me with a jittery feeling coursing through my body. Despite being fully prepared for my presentation, the thought of entering the company I greatly admire still fills me with anxiety. After a quick and nourishing breakfast, a refreshing shower, and getting dressed for work, I take a long glance at myself in the mirror. Dark circles under my eyes and a tired expression make me look older than my years. Months of stress have taken a toll on my skin, leaving it lackluster and marked by countless sleepless nights spent working diligently.

Despite the heavy weight of exhaustion and neglect, I attempted to deceive myself into feeling optimistic. My first agenda was appearing presentable for the conference at Lowell Enterprises headquarters. A quick fix of masks, creams, and makeup veiled my lack of self-care and unhealthy habits. The reflection in the mirror showed an unfamiliar sight - someone who hadn't taken the time to look good in months. My appearance was impeccable - a flawless face adorned with a loose high bun, topped off with a black pencil skirt and light beige blouse tucked neatly into its waistline. My outfit was completed with simple yet elegant touches - a large black bag and chunky-heeled shoes that exuded professionalism. Although I couldn't afford designer labels or keep up with current fashion trends, I made sure to put in my best effort to appear put together and composed. After giving one last approving glance at the mirror, I headed out the door, carefully navigating through my flatmate's cluttered belongings strewn across the living room floor. Filled with renewed confidence and determination, I grinned at my reflection before heading off for work. Arriving at Lowell Enterprises headquarters early as planned, I made a quick stop at a nearby coffee shop to grab an iced coffee for my boss, Susan, just like every other morning. Though she never asked for it explicitly, it had become a daily ritual for me to ensure her caffeine fix was met, and I wasn't about to break that routine on such an important day.

The coffee shop door jingled as I entered, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee filled my nostrils. There were only a few people in line ahead of me, and I breathed a sigh of relief, hoping to get my caffeine fix quickly. The first two customers were served promptly, but the man in the suit at the front seemed to be taking forever. Finally, he passed by me with two cardboard trays full of coffee cups, and I could finally order my much-needed iced coffee. But just as I was about to request them, the barista informed me that they had run out of coffee and needed to clean the machine. Frustrated, I settled for one coffee and left the shop, eager to make it to my meeting on time. As I approached the impressive Lowell headquarters building, I couldn't help but feel small in its shadow. The entrance hall was vast, with a pristine white marble floor that reflected every step I took. The minimalist design of black, white, and grey with hints of metallic accents gave off an air of sophistication. In the center of the room stood a grand fountain with three wolf statues spewing water from their mouths. It was all very impressive, and I couldn't wait to see what else this company had in store for me.

As I approached the towering building, my heart raced with a mix of awe and nervousness. The sleek metal exterior gleamed in the morning sunlight, exuding an air of elegance and luxury. Two imposing security guards dressed entirely in black stood at attention on either side of the entrance, their sharp gazes scanning everyone who entered.

I took a deep breath and stepped inside, feeling intimidated by the grandeur and professionalism of the place. At the reception desk, three attractive women welcomed visitors with warm smiles and efficiently checked them in. Summoning my courage, I approached one of the receptionists – a young woman who appeared to be close to my age.

"Hi, I'm here for a conference and need to go to the 50th floor," I said, trying to sound confident. But as her gaze swept over me, I could sense her skepticism.

"Good morning. May I ask for your name, invitation, or visitor/employee card?" She asked with a forced smile.

My heart sank as I realized I had forgotten some crucial details. "My name is Lina Wilson and I work for Wolfsville Tourism and Leisure. My boss is Susan Miller," I explained, feeling flustered.

The receptionist's smile turned into a sly smirk. "I'm sorry, honey, but I can't assist you without concrete proof."

Feeling embarrassed and frustrated, I remembered Susan's email containing all the necessary details for today's appointment. Without saying anything else, I placed her coffee on the desk and quickly retrieved my phone from my bag.

Unlocking it, I saw missed calls and messages from Susan - she had been trying to reach me. Scrolling through my emails, I found the one from someone named Coco which contained all the crucial information for today's meeting.

Without hesitation, I opened the email and extended it to the receptionist for her perusal. Her eyes widened as she read through the contents.

"Ms. Wilson, you may proceed to the elevator. You'll need this card to access the 50th floor," she said, her tone now respectful.

With a grateful nod, I murmured a quick "thank you" before returning my phone to my bag and grabbing the access card in one hand and Susan's coffee in the other.

Determined to make it to my meeting on time, I walked past one of the security guards and headed toward the elevators. Luckily, I caught one that had just arrived.

As the doors opened onto the sleek gray conference room, I let out a sigh of relief. But then disaster struck – I crashed into my boss.

Panicked and embarrassed, I tried to wipe away the stain from his expensive suit and succeeded in making it worse. And that's how I managed to anger my future boss and get fired before even applying for the job. Or at least that's what I thought.
