Chapter 1 - life of a simple man

In a room lit only by the glow of a computer screen, Johan was hard at work. His desk was a mess of papers, coffee cups, and tangled wires. The sound of his fingers tapping on the keyboard filled the room, occasionally interrupted by a tired sigh.

The clock on the wall showed that it was way past midnight, and outside, the city had quieted down for the night. But in Johan's small apartment, the world of lines and codes was alive and kicking. He stared at the lines of code on the screen, his face showing signs of exhaustion.

The light from the computer dimly cast a glow on Johan's tired face. Deep lines could be seen on his forehead, and an obvious black spot lingered beneath his eyes. His eyes appeared irritated, as well as dry and red. Clearly, Johan had not gotten enough rest. His hand moved quickly and precisely on the keyboard, with every rhythmic tap akin to beats. Click, tap, click, tap; it appeared that the room hummed with the sound of electronic gadgets, sharing secrets with each other with every click.

His tired eyes and the half-empty coffee mug told the story of a man dedicated to his work. The lines of code on the screen were akin to a digital canvas, and Johan was the artist, pushing himself to perfection in the world of ones and zeros.

"I'm tired," the man remarked as he rubbed his eyes.

"And I'm hungry." Looking at the clock, it was clear that Johan had been at this for hours. A forgotten mug of cold coffee sat next to his keyboard.

As Johan got up, he walked unsteadily to the fridge. He rummaged but to no result; he had forgotten that his supply had been emptied. Left with no choice, he decided to go out and buy some snacks at the convenience store near his residence. As Johan got dressed, he took one last stare at his Chef-d'oeuvre.

Unaware that this would mark the end, he took one last glimpse at his works.

As the man left his residence, the cold lunar air suddenly greeted him. "Thankfully, I have my hoodie with me," Johan muttered absentmindedly as he walked to his destination.

Maybe because he was deep in his thoughts, maybe he was just hungry, or maybe he was simply too tired; he didn't hear the honk of a speeding bus. The bus kept honking, as if desperate to get the attention of the man ahead. "GET AWAY!" the bus driver shouted. No matter how hard he braked, it never worked.

"SHI---!"

As Johan saw the terrified expression of the bus driver, dread could not keep up with him, as the event was too fast. He never knew what happened. All he knew was that he would be consumed, and the dawn of a new day would forever remain beyond his grasp.
