"Maybe, it's time you should consider managing your workload independently," Kayden remarked, a hint of exasperation lacing his voice. It wasn't aimed at Markus, but rather at the situation.
Eight years ago, when Markus was drowning in a project, Kayden, with his unique blend of urban development, sustainability, and management expertise, had swooped in and saved the day. Witnessing Kayden's exceptional talent, Markus had offered him a job. It was a win-win situation – Markus gained a highly skilled right-hand man, freeing up time for his family, and Kayden found a way to utilize his knowledge while receiving the financial support he desperately needed at the time.
"There's no point letting your talent go to waste," Markus said with a wide grin, clapping Kayden on the shoulder.
Kayden remained silent. He owed this family a debt that could never be fully repaid. They had taken him in when he was most vulnerable, offering not just a job but a sense of belonging.
A sweet, high-pitched voice, calling "Dada! Greenie!" shattered the contemplative mood.
Both men turned their attention towards a little violet blur hurtling towards them. She stumbled slightly, but Kayden was there in a flash, scooping her up in his arms. The little girl wrapped her arms around his neck, her large, eyes sparkling with joy.
"Greenie, you're the best!" she exclaimed, peppering his cheeks with kisses.
"Come down, I want a hug too!" Daisy chimed in, though her playful demeanor was marred by a slight pout. She tugged at Violet's clothes, clearly wanting her turn in Kayden's embrace.
Laughter filled the air as Kayden bent down and gathered both girls into a warm hug. They clung to him like koalas, their affection genuine and heartwarming.
Markus felt a pang of amusement rather than jealousy. It was a familiar scene – their "Greenie" was their world whenever Kayden was around.
Irene appeared just then, witnessing her husband's situation. A smile played on her lips.
"Markus, come help me set the table," she instructed, her gaze flickering to the girls. "Alright, you two, time for lunch! Let Uncle Emzy eat first. He must be tired from his travels."
The girls, however, remained glued to Kayden. Violet lifted her head just enough to peek at him with her irresistible charm.
"Greenie, eat first and chase away those hungry mice in your tummy," she said in a voice that could melt glaciers. "Then we can play!"
Kayden chuckled, the sound warm and fresh. He carried both girls inside.
The meal was filled with laughter and lighthearted conversation. Afterwards, Kayden spent some time playing with the girls. However, noticing their drooping eyelids, he gently put them to bed. They were soon fast asleep, their peaceful faces a picture of innocence.
As Kayden stepped out of the room, he found Irene waiting by the doorway, her gaze fixed on him.
"They're already asleep?"
"Yes," he replied softly. "They must be exhausted after all that playing."
Watching the stern-faced man tucking her daughters in with such care, Irene couldn't help but feel a sense of envy for the woman who would eventually capture his heart.
"I know you're incredibly busy right now," Irene began, her voice laced with concern. "You wouldn't be here unless something was wrong, would you?"
Kayden didn't hesitate to explain the situation. "Sister-in-law, Brother Markus has an urgent meeting in the capital tomorrow. We need to leave this evening."
Irene, understanding Kayden's dedication to his work, simply nodded. "Of course." A question lingered in her mind, though. "Markus could have gone alone. Why did you travel back and forth instead of taking a break?"
Kayden met her gaze, his voice filled with a quiet sincerity. "I wanted to see my princesses."
He glanced back at the room, a soft smile gracing his lips. Irene patted his arm gently.
"Go and get some rest yourself," she said warmly. "I've prepared the guest room for you."
Knowing his flight was soon, Kayden followed her suggestion. Irene watched him go, a thoughtful expression on her face. Just as she turned to leave the hallway, she saw Markus staring in the direction Kayden had disappeared.
"You should make him work less," She nudged him playfully. "Is this how you treat your brother?"
A flicker of sadness crossed Markus's eyes. "Don't you already know what burdens him, Irene? What makes him like this?"
Markus wrapped his arm around her shoulders, a mix of emotions swirling in his eyes – sadness, anger, and a deep longing.
"I wish there could be someone in his life," Irene murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
"Everyone has their own path, their own destiny," Markus replied gently, squeezing her hand. "He'll find the one, just like I found you all those years ago."
A playful smile bloomed at Irene's lips. "Oh, you smooth talker!" she teased, playfully hitting him on the chest.
With a shared look of understanding and love, they headed inside to rest for the evening, both harboring a silent wish for Kayden to find the happiness he so deserved.
