Chapter 37 - Cellar

Lin Yiran took Li Zhun to leave the resettlement point quickly. On the way back, looking at the time, it was only ten o'clock, so he said to Li Zhun, "It's still early. Let's go find supplies while we're out."

Li Zhun readily agreed. He really liked the sense of achievement when finding supplies.

The two headed to the suburbs to see if there were any usable supplies there.

Most of the houses in the suburbs were frozen, and the supplies inside were almost taken away. After running around for several houses, it was the same.

Lin Yiran stood outside, looking at a farmhouse and observing carefully.

According to common sense, there should be a cellar in a farmhouse, so where is it?

He looked at it bit by bit and found a broken tricycle parked by the parking lot. Going over to push the tricycle away, he saw a square large mat under the ice.

"Li Zhun, come here!"

"Coming!"

Li Zhun hurried over and saw it too, surprised, "Could this mat be under the cellar?"

"Let's see."

Lin Yiran took out a hidden knife and inserted it into the ice, then cut it little by little to reveal a short flight of steps.

He held a flashlight and went down first, followed by Li Zhun. After observing the environment, their faces changed.

There was a person leaning against the wall looking at them!

Lin Yiran immediately shone the flashlight on him, while grasping the Tang knife with his other hand, ready to strike.

But seeing that the person had closed his eyes, his whole body was stiff, covered with ice crystals, and was already dead.

The two relaxed, and Lin Yiran saw a piece of oilcloth in the corner, so he had to cover the person with it first.

Only then did they see the things in the cellar, shocked to widen their eyes. There were sixteen baskets of pumpkins, carrots, and sweet potatoes, as well as five large jars. Opening one up, it turned out to be pickled vegetables and sour beans!

"Hit the jackpot!" Li Zhun was overjoyed.

Although finding supplies was hard work, the sense of achievement when finding supplies was simply too fulfilling!

Lin Yiran also smiled and said, "Good luck."

He took another look at the frozen person and saw carbon ash and sweet potato peels not far from him, guessing that this person was probably the owner of the farmhouse, who hid in the cellar to eat without worry, but was trapped in the cellar by the ice. He couldn't withstand the extreme cold and froze to death.

Lin Yiran and Li Zhun discussed taking four baskets of vegetables back first, leaving the jars alone. They placed the table upside down on the ice, tied a rope to the two legs, placed the vegetables on it, and then dragged them back.

Before going back, they closed the cellar, laid the mat, and covered it with the ice cubes to hide it. They pushed the tricycle back.

Everything was covered up, and the two decided to hurry back before anyone else came to take it away.

They didn't even have time for lunch, and when they were hungry, they just had some white fungus soup. They rushed back to the apartment before one o'clock.

Su Yu was sitting there, and upon hearing Lin Yiran's whistle, she quickly put away something that shouldn't exist, opened the window to ventilate, and then went down.

Seeing the things they brought back, she was also somewhat surprised, "So many things?"

Li Zhun came over and whispered, "There are still many in the cellar, and there are pickles too..."

In fact, there were hardly anyone in the apartment. Everyone had gone to pick white fungus, but it was better to be cautious and prevent someone from overhearing.

Su Yu immediately helped, and the three of them sent the things upstairs. Lin Yiran asked Li Zhun to stay and clean up, and put them in the kitchen. Li Zhun could only agree.

Su Yu and Lin Yiran went downstairs. She put on ice skates and looked at Lin Yiran, who was wearing thick mountaineering shoes. She thought for a moment and took out another pair of ice skates from her "bag" and handed them to him, "Wear these, it'll be faster."

Lin Yiran looked at her, then withdrew his gaze before she felt uncomfortable, thanked her politely, and took them.

The two wore ice skates and used less than an hour to reach the farmhouse. After Lin Yiran observed the surrounding area, he removed the disguise, opened the door to the cellar.

Because he had mentioned it beforehand, Su Yu didn't get scared when she went down.

She said to Lin Yiran, "Let's take a jar of pickled vegetables and two baskets of vegetables back. I'll help you store the rest."

"Okay."

Lin Yiran readily agreed, "You take one-sixth of the reward."

Su Yu shook her head, "This is what you found. I'm just helping you store it. I'll only take a jar of pickled vegetables."

Anything else, she would keep it.

After they came up, looking at the oilcloth, Su Yu said, "Should we just leave the person in the cellar?"

Lin Yiran looked at her and said, "What do you think?"

"Bring him out and cremate him."

Su Yu thought that in the not-too-distant future, when the extreme heat came, the person would probably rot. To thank him for his supplies, they could help him be cremated.

Lin Yiran went down and wrapped the person in an oilcloth, dragged him out, and placed him in the yard not far away. He poured gasoline on him and lit it, and in ten minutes, the person was burned to ashes, leaving only the ashes. Even the ice was melted by the fire, revealing the ground.

Su Yu found some ice to cover it, and the two watched for a while before leaving.

On the way back, both of them were silent until they reached the apartment. Li Zhun received the message and came down to move the supplies.

Lin Yiran explained to him, "The apartment can't fit anymore, and the other supplies are stored in a safe place, so don't worry."

Li Zhun was relieved and moved the leftover fried rice from the afternoon to the kitchen. Lin Yiran handed her a "brick", explaining the situation.

Su Yu thanked him and accepted the unexpected surprise.Unexpectedly, by being softhearted for a moment, she could get this kind of communication tool that couldn't be bought even if she wanted to.
