Chapter 1 - 1: Met with a terrible fate

The beeping of the monitor was the only audible noise in Victoria's hospice room. Her weary emerald eyes stared out the window at the people who were enjoying the spring weather.

The beautiful flowers that bloomed used to be one of her favorite things but she hadn't gotten the chance to adore them in years.

Her chapped lips let out a sigh as only wished she could be out there where there was life and fun.

A single tear drop trailed down her eyes as she remembered the fact that she had less than a few weeks left to live.

How did her life get to that point? Left alone to die in a hospice bed, forever regretting every single decision she made in her life.

She was all alone, she had always been. Her parents got divorced when she was eight and she was left with her mother, only for her mother to fall ill two years later and pass away.

She grew up by herself, struggled to feed her mouth and her little sister.

She managed to get a few jobs that helped her sponsor herself and sister to school but she was too busy that she had no time for her sister.

On her eighteenth birthday, it was such beautiful weather and she went out to buy a cake to celebrate with her only family, only to return home to find her sister dying.

With her last breath, her sister blamed her for her death and ever since then, Victoria had never celebrated another birthday.

"Mom, Hope, I miss you guys so much." Victoria muttered as tears fell from her eyes.

"I'll be coming to see you soon, please wait for me." She cried.

The door to the room pushed open and a young man in a white coat walked in. "Miss Crown? Your bills are yet to be paid and my superiors are wondering when it will come in?"

She turned to him and immediately wiped her tears. "What? But I thought
 my husband he
" she stuttered.

"Your husband said you would handle your own bills. He told us this a few weeks ago but we are yet to get anything from you." He said.

"What? I am not aware of this, he has my card and everything, he will pay the bills."

"I'm only here to relay a message, if you can't get it paid today then we will have to send you home. We only left you here because you used to work for us."

The young doctor bowed his head and walked out of the room.

She felt like her heart was about to explode, what? Pay her own bills? What the hell was he thinking? How would she be able to pay her bills?

She struggled to climb down from the bed with her last strength to get to the drawer by the window side.

Rummaging through the drawer, she found her phone and picked it out. Immediately, she dialed her husband's number but it was to no avail.

[The number you are calling does not exist, please check the number and try again]

"What? But this is my husband's number!" She exclaimed surprisedly.

She immediately dialed it again but the computer said the same thing.

She didn't know what to do, the next thing that popped into her head was to call her best friend.

Yes, she had a best friend, Naomi Heart.

Naomi was the only person who always visited her at the hospital but a few weeks back, she told Victoria that the company had sent her to another state to treat some sick patients so she wouldn't be able to visit her anymore.

But what choice did she have? There was no one else to call.

[The number you have dialed is not answering, please--]

"Oh Naomi please pick up!"

She dialed the number again.

[Hi, this is Naomi, I can't pick up right now so please leave a message at the beep]

She got redirected to voicemail.

Left with no choice, she picked up a jacket from the drawer and threw it on then kept her phone in the pocket.

As she walked out of the hospital, her used to be colleagues just stared at her without saying a word to her.

From the hospital to her home was a trekable distance so she decided to walk it since she had no money on her.

Occasionally, she would have to stop to rest on the roadside benches or lean on a wall for strength but eventually, she got to her house.

It was a rented apartment in a towering building and theirs was on the top, she would have to climb so many stairs as there were no elevators in the old building.

One slow step at a time, she forced her body up and stopped after two to catch her breath.

Her legs suddenly became weak and she fell, groaning from the sudden pain she felt in her chest. She was suffering from stomach and lung cancer.

"I can do this
 I have to do this
" she motivated herself.

She raised her body and dragged herself up the flight of stairs.

Finally arriving at their doorstep, the door was opened by a few inches.

She shook her head in disappointment. "He never learnt to lock the door."

As she walked in, she saw a pair of heels and a pink Gucci bag placed carelessly on the floor.

She could hear muffled moans of a woman's voice coming from the bedroom but she told herself she was hearing wrong.

She dragged herself to the bedroom, the door was left wide open.

Clothes were left lying on the ground as well as red g-string panties.

Just like she had heard, her husband was having sex with another woman.

"Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!"

Her voice traveled through the room as she screamed.

Her husband flinched at the sound of her voice, startled. As he moved aside, a set of familiar eyes stared back at her.

She gasped. "Naomi?" Her breath shuddered.

"What? Vicky? What are you doing here? Who let you out of the hospital?" Her husband questioned.

Just like they had lives of their own, Victoria's hands started picking up things and began throwing at both of them.

"What are you doing?! Stop it!" Her husband exclaimed.

"You lying bastard!"

A framed picture of herself and her husband went straight at his head and blood began to trail down his forehead.

"Ah! Richard! Are you okay?" Naomi questioned worriedly.

She cupped his face in her palms as worry glistened in her eyes.

Tears filled Victoria's eyes as she watched them displaying affection towards each other while she was still standing there.

"I'm fine, get dressed, let's leave this psychotic bitch alone here." Richard said.

They put on their clothes while Victoria stood there and stared, feeling like she was in a dream.

Richard shoved her aside with his shoulder and went into the living room. "Hurry up, Naomi, let's stay at yours for a while huh?"

Naomi nodded shyly.

As she walked past Victoria, she felt her arms grip hers tightly. "Why would you do this to me? You are my only friend, my best friend!"

"Why can't I do this exactly? I am your best friend which is why you should be happy I am willing to take care of your husband while you die." Naomi spat out.

"Whose fault is it that I'm dying huh? Isn't it his?!" Victoria's emerald eyes glared.

"No, you have cancer, that's why. You know, I have to be honest with you, I added a little dosage of poison to your drip to help you die peacefully without any pain."

"You tried to kill me?"

"I wanted you to pass on peacefully because I love you! The poison would make you feel less pain while you die, that was the best I could do for you."

Victoria couldn't hide it, she was so surprised to see Naomi blurting out those words with so much bravery.

"You crazy bitch!"

She grabbed at Naomi's hair and began pulling with all her might.

"Ah! Leave me! Stop it!" Naomi groaned.

"Hey you crazy witch!"

Richard jumped in between them and pushed Victoria away so much energy that she went flying straight to the wall.

Her head met with the hard surface and split open her skull in a crushingly painful way.

Victoria immediately fell to the ground the instant she slammed against the wall, blood followed her body as she collapsed.

Naomi screamed and covered her mouth with her hands as her brown eyes widened in fear.

"Ah! You've killed her! Richard!!!" She exclaimed.

"Shush! Keep your voice down! We have to clean up the mess and place her in a way to convince the police that we didn't do anything." Richard stated, fidgeting.

Victoria fell deaf almost immediately and her vision started becoming dark and blurry.

The last thing she saw was her best friend and husband pulling at her legs, causing her head to hit the ground with so much force that she instantly blacked out.

★

"Vicky, Vicky! Vicky!"

A muffled masculine voice called out her name. It was almost like it was from a distance.

"Vicky!"

She flinched at his touch on her shoulder.

Her eyes widened as she met with a set of unforgettable ocean blue eyes.

Richard squeezed her shoulder gently. "Are you

okay? You're in tears! Did something happen?"

He worriedly began scanning her body with his eyes. "Does it hurt anywhere?"

The sound of her heartbeat was all she could hear as her heart raced like it was about to explode through her chest.

She clenched at her chest, she couldn't breathe.

"What is happening to you?!"

Was it all a dream? Is she in some kind of alternate universe? Why could she still remember the pain from hitting her head?

Was she dead but somehow
 alive?
