A few days later, Anton had fully recovered physically, but his mind was more bewildered than his body, so before anything else, he wanted to stay calm once again. As Anton was putting on a white T-shirt after taking a shower at the hospital, he heard the door being opened, and without any exaggerated reaction, he looked at who had entered.
"What are you doing here?"
However, Anton couldn't maintain his composure when he saw Akira, who had entered the private room.
"What was she doing here?"
From the expression on Akira's face, it was clear that she was not in a good mood coming to this place, so it was evident that her father had sent her here for some reason that Anton was unaware of.
Akira looked at Anton and said, "Get dressed quickly."
In confusion, Anton asked, "Why?"
"Since you're completely healed, my father has invited us to dinner for a meeting between a potential bright future family. He believes that if we get to know each other better, we might have a closer connection." Akira sat on a chair right next to the bed where Anton was buttoning his shirt.
Anton acknowledged Akira's visit and asked, "Do you think you disagree with the engagement?"
This was the only thought Anton had when he saw how interested Mr. Shimazu was in a simple dinner that should take up a lot of valuable time.
"Maybe that's his concern, but I can't tell him to stay calm because I have to show indifference about it." Akira replied with the toughness that always characterized her expression.
Anton, of course, didn't care about this. In fact, it was certainly an appeal that distinguished Akira from the other women he had known before.
"With just the two of you, he should be worried, especially when Baba Yaga is a friend of your father and now seems to be excommunicated."
A few days ago, Anton realized that John had been excommunicated from the Continental hotels, and he knew that Akira's father had a very good relationship with John. So, the acceleration of their relationship might be due to the protection of his daughter, which was very intelligent on his part.
"Forget it; that's more worrying than anything else." Akira, feeling better, looked at Anton and asked, "How are you? It seems whatever you faced didn't treat you well."
Akira involuntarily looked at all the scars on Anton's body—some seemed to be burns, others were long scratches, and she could even see bullet wounds in very dangerous areas.
With her experience, she knew that professional assassins were injured, but not like this. Now she knew that Anton's job wasn't just being an exorcist who gave blessings, but someone who faced the most terrifying things in the world—that was the supernatural.
Anton seemed to notice Akira's gaze and smiled a little. "If it's dinner, we still have a few hours before that. How about you give me a tour of some interesting places before that?"
"Are you this curious?" Akira looked up, evaluating Anton's empty gaze that now showed more emotion.
Anton put on his jacket and said, "Normally, nothing excites me more than eliminating my targets, but it never hurts to have a bit of fun."
"Then follow me. I don't know good places, but I know a few spots where many people gather." Akira was surprised by his way of expressing himself, but knowing that Anton was right in a way, she took him to the city center, where many interesting things were.
After getting into the car parked outside the hospital, Anton sat next to Akira, letting her drive since it wasn't his car.
"Tell me, Akira, have you found any interests besides helping your father? Most of the time, I feel lost, as if something is stopping me from enjoying other things." Anton said, looking at the modern buildings around him.
Akira, who had heard the first question, was angered by Anton's confidence in asking that. But after hearing him talk about his feelings toward life, she sighed and said, "Protecting my only family has always been what I've done. None of that has changed, but I think it's not worth it, and the worst part is that my father knows it. Still, knowing that he protects many people as the hotel manager, he will continue to do so until the day he dies."
"Very honorable, but after that, what are you going to do?" Anton looked at Akira's expression, which seemed lost, and smiled. "As exorcists, everyone has a duty, and it's safe to serve the light they have sworn to protect, even after death. We don't do it for people; we do it because we know few can."
"When one looks into the deepest darkness, they break, feel empty, and even doubt if they have been dedicating themselves to eliminating evil for a good cause. The world is evil, Akira; you must know that's how we are and will continue to be evil. But the little things make our short lives honorable. I really don't want to force you into an engagement you disagree with."
Saying these words, Anton looked at Akira and said, "But as long as we're engaged, I'll protect you. That won't change, even if you're not willing to marry me. I have very little time to dedicate to finding a partner, so I'm afraid I won't be a good husband for you, someone you truly want."
Anton didn't know how long he would last in this world. The things he was facing were getting stronger, his wounds were increasing, and he knew that someday he would likely fall in battle against evil—that was his mission, and he fully accepted it. But he wouldn't let his redemption affect someone else. It would be too selfish if he acted that way.
He had discovered this after the last exorcism. He didn't have the right to trap someone else with his problems, and he shouldn't be someone who joined another person knowing that he could die at any moment.
Anton had stopped feeling what love was, so he didn't know what he was about to offer in a relationship. Akira, a good lady, couldn't let herself get caught up in his dark life.
Akira listened to these words in silence. She never thought that Anton would open up, but she found it very pleasant. "Can you get a fiancé better than you?"
"Huh?" Anton, who was in the process of opening up seriously with Akira, fell silent.
"Let's buy ice cream; this is where they sell Kiwi-flavored ice cream... Come on, stop taking our engagement so seriously. Like you said, maybe we'll die before getting married." Akira smiled as she got out of the car.
Anton, who had seen Akira's expression soften, was surprised. Had he just enamored this woman? Seriously, the world would be crazy if that were the case. So he got out of the car and followed Akira, who was standing in front of an ice cream stand.
"I want vanilla ice cream; give that man the Kiwi one."
Anton smiled bitterly; he really didn't like Kiwi.
