(A/N: second day, second milestone..... I don't know what else to say lol, When I was in the office I saw the notification about the number of powerstones you guys sent, I thought 'do I have to increase the number of powerstones in the milestones?', but anyway thanks for the support!!! This is the second bonus chapter because it has reached the second milestone, namely 100+ Powerstones!!!)
========================================
On July 20th, in front of them stretched a tropical uninhabited island, with a clear, vast sea under a high, blue sky. The students were slated to spend two weeks in this place.
"It's just as Mashima-Sensei described, but this island seems much larger than the uninhabited one from a year ago," remarked Hirata, standing beside them.
Indeed, it was evident at first glance that the scale was much grander compared to the previous year.
"Well, it's for all the grades, isn't it? So, naturally, it's spacious," replied another student.
"There might be unforeseen circumstances, and above all, securing water is the most crucial," someone else added.
Even from onboard the ship, they could feel the heat, and it was clear that the sun was beating down on the sandy shore. With temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius, there was a high possibility of many succumbing to heatstroke.
As they gathered here, they were called to the ship's theater, where they received instructions on a large screen.
"Now, I'd like to explain the rules for the special exam on the uninhabited island," announced MaShima-Sensei , the instructor for 2nd-year Class A, just like the previous year.
The stay on the uninhabited island would last for two weeks starting the next day. If any participants suffered from injuries or illnesses rendering them unable to continue during the exam period, or if they committed a serious rule violation, they would be forced to retire.
Groups ranging from a minimum of three to a maximum of six members were allowed. However, if all members of a group retired, their ranking would be determined at that point. The bottom five groups would face expulsion unless they managed to escape it.
"Now, each group will engage in a battle to gather 'points' to determine their ranking," continued Mashima-Sensei.
・Survival test where all groups compete to gather rewards for two weeks.
・If all members of a group withdraw due to retirement during the period, they will be disqualified at that point.
(The points collected become invalid and the ranking is determined immediately.)
In other words, even if you gather many points, if everyone retires, everything will be in vain. And along with the overview, a map of the uninhabited island is displayed, divided into small, evenly distributed squares with lines vertically and horizontally.
The rules included a two-week survival exam where groups competed to gather privileges. If all members of a group retired during the period, they would be disqualified, and the collected points would become invalid, determining the rankings on the spot.
The methods to gather points included two ways. One was through "basic movement," where groups were instructed to move to specific squares, divided into a hundred squares each, at regular intervals of time. For instance, if the starting point was the harbor in the D9 area and the designated destination was the C8 area, the group that arrived first would receive 10 points, the second group 5 points, the third group 3 points, and those who arrived within the specified time would receive an equal "arrival bonus" of 1 point.
Undoubtedly, there would be groups willing to take risks to aim for the top spot. However, the competition would take place on an uninhabited island, where unexpected events could lead to retirements.
"The announcements for the destination areas in the basic movement will occur three times on the first and last days of the exam, and four times during the remaining twelve days. The goal times are from 7 am to 9 am, followed by a two-hour break, then from 1 pm to 3 pm, and finally from 3 pm to 5 pm."
It seemed the school had taken into account the risks involved by limiting activities until 5 pm.
"A crucial point to note is that skipping the movement to the designated area three times in a row will result in a deduction of one point each time."
If they depleted their stamina or became unable to move, they would fall behind in reaching the designated areas. On the other hand, camping at the starting point for two weeks wouldn't accumulate points. However, as long as one member of the group reached the destination, they'd be safe from this deduction.
While having more members was advantageous on the map, there were areas like water surfaces where arrival wasn't possible, so those areas wouldn't be designated.
Moving from the northernmost to the southernmost point within two hours was impossible. Pursuing distant areas might lead to stamina depletion or accidents preventing movement. This would result in failure to reach the next area, perpetually lagging behind the designated areas, a frightening prospect indeed.
Basic Movement Rules:
- The designated area will be announced four times a day (three times on the first and last days without random designation). The goal times are from 7 am to 9 am, 9 am to 11 am, 1 pm to 3 pm, and 3 pm to 5 pm.
- There are rules for the designated area. Three times a day, it will be set within a range of one square diagonally forward or backward. Once a day, it will be randomly designated, and which point becomes the designated square is unknown.
(Random designation will not occur consecutively.)
- Groups that reach the designated area will receive points in the order of arrival: 10 points for 1st place, 5 points for 2nd place, and 3 points for 3rd place.
- Upon arriving at the designated area within each time frame, everyone will receive a bonus point for arrival.
- If a group has already arrived at the designated area when it is announced, they will receive one point, but the ranking rewards will be invalid.
- Skipping the designated area three times in a row will result in a penalty, with points deducted according to the number of times skipped.
(However, once you stop skipping, the cumulative value will return to zero.)
Following this, wristwatches will also be distributed.
Overview of Wristwatches:
- The school will monitor the wearer's health status for 24 hours through the wristwatch.
- If any abnormalities such as damage are detected, the wristwatch will become unavailable, so regular checks are necessary.
- Any abnormal health conditions of the wearer will be alerted. Warning alerts can be ignored, but in case of an emergency alert, the wearer must return to the starting point.
(There is a risk of retirement if the wearer does not arrive within 24 hours.)
- There are 12 tables on the wristwatch, each with a different sequence of designated areas.
- If the emergency alert continues for 5 minutes without being stopped, medical teams will rush to the scene.
Anyone can participate in gathering privileges by moving around the designated areas if they are healthy, but to earn high points, speed and stamina are crucial.
In other words, students lacking in physical abilities will have a slim chance of winning.
Assignment: "Math Test"
Conditions for Participation: Entry within 60 minutes of the assignment appearing
Number of Participants: 10 people; the deadline is when at least 10 people have entered
Victory Conditions: Competition among students gathered within the designated time frame
Rewards: 1st place - 5 points, 2nd place - 3 points, 3rd place - 1 point, and winners will also receive a day's worth of food.
Assignment: "Shot Put"
Conditions for Participation: Entry within 30 minutes of the assignment appearing
Number of Participants: Three groups or more
Victory Conditions: Competition based on the total distance thrown by three individuals
And so on. The abilities required for assignments consist of academic ability (40%), physical ability (30%), and other factors (30%).
There will always be staff or teachers waiting at the entry points for the assignments, and it seems entries are made through the wristwatches.
Overview of Assignments:
- Assignments appear randomly starting from 7 am and end at 5 pm.
- Assignments are classified into three types, with similar tasks appearing multiple times.
- The timing of assignment appearances cannot be predicted, and one needs to visit the location to know the status of implementation.
- Top performers will receive rewards such as points, food, and an increase in the maximum limit of group members.
Anyway, the content is quite simple. Just repeat the basic movements and assignments to accumulate points.
"Now, I would like to hand over to the Vice-Chairman of the Board, Tsukishiro, for some remarks."
With that, Mashima-sensei handed the mic to Tsukishiro.
This guy... seems to be one of Kiyotaka's enemies.
"Hello, this is Vice-Chairman Tsukishiro. Since this exam is going to be a large-scale one, please approach it with caution. I'd like to give you one piece of advice: if any sexual troubles occur, we will not hesitate to enforce strict penalties, and if deemed serious, we will also report to the police. Please don't forget about that."
Huh? Is this a warning directed at me? It's okay, it's okay, I won't do anything on the uninhabited island, probably...
"And one more thing, the longer your stay here, the more frustration will build up. Sometimes, it may escalate into small conflicts among students... Regarding that, I adopt a policy of acceptance."
Mashima-sensei whispered to Tsukishiro that arbitrary remarks were troublesome, but trouble was bound to happen, which I also thought. However, despite accepting it, it seemed they didn't endorse it, according to him.
With that, Tsukishiro's speech ended, and thick manuals were distributed. At the starting point, there were facilities like free-to-use toilets, shower rooms, and from the second day onwards, there would be places for replenishing water. It seemed essential living supplies would be distributed for free, so that should be okay. Tablets were also distributed, and I caught a glimpse of their overview.
Information about the Tablets:
- Small tablets provided to all students.
- Allows viewing of the map of the uninhabited island, with real-time confirmation of designated areas and one's current location.
- Enables viewing of assignment locations and detailed rewards.
- From the 4th to the 12th day of the exam, it's possible to check the top and bottom 10 groups (details of total points breakdown available only for one's own group and the top and bottom 10 groups).
- GPS search function, allowing viewing of all students' current locations from the 6th day onwards.
- In case of anything affecting the entire exam, messages may be received from the school.
- If the battery runs low, charging is possible at the starting point or specific locations.
I see, it would be wise to get a mobile charger. It seems backups will also be provided, but they're advised to be checked at the exhibition room. With that, the teacher's explanation ended.
…..
8:40 AM, the ship slowly began its docking operation. In other words, the exam on the uninhabited island was about to begin. The order of disembarking on the uninhabited island would start from the freshmen, with a total of 15 to 30 minutes for each class. It would be a race against time for moving, so D class would be at a disadvantage compared to A class.
"Good morning, both of you. Did you sleep well yesterday?"
"Yeah, kinda."
"Oh, by the way, are you feeling okay?"
"They're bringing up last year's stuff. They seem quite relaxed despite the important exam starting soon... especially you, Horagasaki-kum ? What are you doing?"
Feeling nostalgic upon seeing the sandbox, I inadvertently drew a dog with a stick on the ground. Sorry about that.
"Um... well, you see..."
""What's that about?""
Kiyotaka and Horikita harmonized in their teasing.
You guys are quite friendly.
It seemed most of the freshmen had completed their disembarking, and now it was the turn of the sophomores. Everyone began checking the details simultaneously. I was assigned to D5, heading north, and Kiyotaka seemed to be in the same direction, while Horikita appeared to be at F9. I decided to head to D5 first and began walking.
.....
The flat road soon came to an end, and dense, overgrown trees appeared. Unlike the artificial island from last year, this place clearly showed traces of past human habitation.
While heading towards my destination, I spotted some students discussing their next move towards the designated area.
"Oh, it's Keisei!"
"Hey, Jin. Which area are you heading to?"
"I'm going to D5. How about you?"
"We're at D8, and we're already done."
It seemed they had already managed to earn points early on. After a brief conversation, Haruka and the others bid me farewell, and I continued towards D5.
I searched for nearby tasks and found several options within the area, including an "English Test" and "Grip Strength Measurement" conducted separately for males and females. Among the 14 tasks, the furthest one seemed to be "Strength Training." It seemed interesting; one could choose various options based on their thinking.
Around noon, it was time for the second designated area, E6. After a 30-minute walk, I arrived and found several students gathered there, along with the second-year C-class homeroom teacher, Hoshinomiya-sensei, waiting under a tent to shield from the scorching sun.
"Oh! Hey there, Horagasaki-kun ! But unfortunately, the task closed about five minutes ago."
"Seriously? Then I'll head out."
"No need to rush; we have plenty of time."
"I'll go solo and do my best. Okay?"
I desperately tried to persuade Hoshinomiya-sensei to understand, but truth be told, I just wanted to move quickly.
"Aw, don't be so mean! I just wanted to chat a bit. Will you listen to my complaints? You will, right? You're so nice, Jin!"
Hoshinomiya-sensei started getting carried away with her own satisfaction. No good, she's such an airhead.
"Anyway, it's been a while since I talked to you alone, Horagasaki-kun."
"Yeah, it has."
"You've been quite on edge lately. Remember that flash mental arithmetic test at the end of the year? It's abnormal how you solved all the questions perfectly."
"It's nothing. Aren't there others who can do it?"
"Oh? Like Ayanokoji?"
Bringing up Kiyotaka's name, Hoshinomiya-sensei probed further. It seemed she was interested in Kiyotaka , perhaps due to the friction between them. It was an unpleasant turn of events; it seemed Hoshinomiya was also concerned about Kiyotaka, who scored 100 points on the last test.
"Yeah, maybe. He's smart, after all."
"Yeah, you're right. You know, Horagasaki-kun and Ayanokoji-kun, D class is a group of underachievers, to put it bluntly, but is it okay for such extraordinary kids like you and Ayanokoji to be mixed in there?"
It seemed she was pushing boundaries, gathering a lot of information in the process.
"I'm also feeling uneasy. It's the first time I've fallen to the C class, you know. Although there was always competition between A and B classes, and between C and D classes, it seems like there's been a change in the balance."
If Hoshinomiya's thoughts were correct, it meant the equilibrium had been disrupted. It was a clear expression of dissatisfaction towards Ichinose's class.
"That's the duty of the homeroom teacher, isn't it?"
"I don't want to hear that!"
Hoshinomiya-sensei covered her ears with both hands, acting all cute. She's hopeless.
"Oh, right! How about this revolutionary idea! What if you move to our class, just like Katsuragi-kun moved to the B class?"
Not revolutionary at all.
"Let's aim for A class together, okay?"
"Why not Ayanokoji?"
"I asked him the same thing earlier, but he turned me down subtly. So, what about you?"
"Well, I probably don't even have 20 million points at this stage, so who knows what will happen?"
"Oh, Ayanokoji-kun had the same opinion."
I personally didn't care about A class or anything like that. I just wanted to enjoy my time here without getting expelled from the school. In other words, if I collect 20 million points and move to another class, what will happen? I'll run out of money to play with. Don't you hate that? Especially when there's an air of having to accommodate everyone in C class, making group activities difficult for me, who dislikes group activities.
"Well then, I'll go."
"You're not swayed at all. Well, there are still two weeks left, so we might meet again! If you change your mind, let me know anytime!"
With that, Hoshinomiya-sensei saw me off, still in high spirits. Although I didn't change my mind, I decided to leave the scene.
