Chapter 1 - He Knows what he needs to...

They know his name; they have always known his name. No matter what they simple refuse to use it, he is tired of trying to get them to use it anyways, she pays that's all that matters. Anyways daydreaming now isn't a good idea I need to get my head in the game...

He stood over the mark with the gun to his head, a cigarette in his mouth and it was raining it always rained on jobs like this. "So hey, the boss says you owe money, I don't know the facts, but you need to pay with something or else"... he said trailing off as he caught a glimpse of movement in the alley toward the end of the pathway. "They're fucking liars' man! I paid what I owed! look, if you let me go, I can make it worth your time here, but I swear I paid it all" said the mark, he sat in the pile of trash I threw him into. "Last time man, I already said that I don't know about your deal, and I don't care. I need that grand, they don't send me on bullshit harassment jobs" at that moment the figure hiding behind that dumpster thought they had their opportunity. they charge him with a knife, he thinks they had a knife. It didn't matter after he put three shots into their chest, and then the stupid mark wanted to do stupid mark shit, he charged at the same time.

After putting down the newcomer he whipped his pistol back and across the cheek of the mark, hearing a solid crunch he guessed this was gonna get more annoying. "Dude please, just let me go ill pay, I swear ill pay!" the mark said as he was now his hands and knees, a sweaty visage over his pain riddle face. "Nope not buying it, guessing by it, that was your man there. yea and i can see the Rolex on your wrist now too, so how about this. give me the watch, the wallet, and whatever else is in your pockets", "I hate these jobs but I'm not leaving until its done man, make a choice". sitting back onto his rear the mark locked eyes with him, gone was any semblance of fear and instead was a mask of hatred. "Fine, I won't forget you though, I hope we cross paths again, I'll pay you back for this embarrassment" the mark declares as he finally complies with the demands. after that he left running off into the night.

"Yea I deserve to be called Mutt after jobs like this" He thought, gathering up the items he looted the marks buddy too, even the knife. you can't really waste in life not if you want to survive. He got the grand he needed from pawning off the watch to a local front, after that he went back to his flat and laid out the ill-gotten goods. He had a pretty high-class place in the city, that what the pay gets you, but he liked it for other reasons; it was a nicely wooded in region, reminding him of his hometown before the fire.

Wanting not to revisit memories like that he turned back to his spoils, the mark had a nice chunk of change on his, and he didn't kill this one too. Too many times they didn't realize that their lies where useless or tried to fight him, like the marks friend... Checking out the blade though he was impressed, must have been a guy that knew his stuff; it was a K-Bar type blade with a solid straight blade, but the dude had the top curve to the blade sharpened so it was a kind of one and a half edged blade, his favorite part was the hollow survival type handle, those were pretty cool. The rest of what he had on him was less as impressive as the knife was, but he did have cash too, and smokes, those are helpful sometimes.

"Mutt, I really hate it, but with the jobs she gives me. Sometimes I feel like I've earned it" "I'll bring them the cash tomorrow, not sure why they are paying so much for me to get so little. It must be a principal thing or something who knows with those types" she told me they asked for me to try not and kill him, so I guess I've earned some brownie points maybe. I think I'm going to try and get her to say my name. who knows maybe I'll get her to slip up.

Outside the weather had moved from rain into a strong lightning storm, the storm was just rolling in, it was gonna do some damage but it's not like he cared, in this city only the corporations had power and unless you could pay to live in the security sectors then you had to hope the gangs were going to try and keep violence down. The Southern Baja district burned when the controlling gangs mobilized against each other, same with the Great Lake district. Here in the "Garden District" peace was tenuous at best, someone needs to work to keep it that way, but it wasn't our line of work.

Waking up the next day he put on the news and sure enough, there was heavy flooding in the district. The west side of the district had it the worst and the local gang was trying its best with the emergency responders they had available, the west side was the worst off financially in the district here. Out of the three major gangs the west side controlled by the Black Sheep was essentially a massive slum, it was where the poor of the district ended up. Crippled by debt, previous injuries, or a variety of other possibilities the Black Sheep had to rule with a heavy hand, after all those with nothing only have their lives to lose and they hardly value those at times, just ask me how i know.

If I had to guess it was the Black Sheep that hired me, since the method to use had to be so heavy handed it does not suit the other two organizations. The Black Sheep started as a social program, taking roots from socialist type ideals; it was supposed to help the poor west side flourish by pooling the peoples wealth so to pay for the expensive community programs that they couldn't afford from the corporations, or to produce them their selves it has had some success but then their leaders developed into an oligarchy, now if they don't think something "deserves to be paid for then it doesn't happen. Don't let that convince you that you don't have to pay your peoples tax though, your gonna pay that.

With that I called my handler, "Madeline" not her real name obviously but she would never give me hers, not like I can force her like she did me. letting her know that I had the payment for the customer I arranged for us to meet, somewhere nice and public. she picked a coffee shop in the upper north side, she likes coffee, so do I. coffee is a nice commodity that only the nicer areas in the districts earn the right to sell from the corporations, like most things they upsell them to pad the profits on such a luxury item. She looked beautiful as always, probably because she takes more of our fee... wearing a white and orange sundress with one of them floppy kind of hats, I sat across from her.

"Good morning, Madeline" I said dripping with attitude. "Mutt" she rebuked. "The dude could have paid them more, everything about him said he had plenty. He even had straight teeth!" then I grabbed my coffee and enjoyed a sip. Madine leaned back and rolled her deep blue eyes "you can guess that it was not about the money Mutt, hell we don't do those kinds of jobs you know that. It would be a waste of your time".

"I only know what you care you tell me. Here I have the Items, I threw in his Identification, so they know that we did the job and not just paid the amount", leaning back myself I was already getting tired of her and her perfect teeth. "As always Mutt, I can expect you to produce results. They did not have any other contracts for us to take so you can take some time off, for now" Then she winked, and we exchange envelopes, The proof for my payment. "I don't want to take another job like this. They're too fucking messy" I said trying to make eye contact with Madeline. She met eye contact with equal intensity "a mutt will get what I give and be happy for it. Do you forget where I found you?" she said without breaking eye contact.

"No, I'll never forget that place Madeline. They're just too fucking messy, it's not good for our style" Anyway, just in case you care, even though you really fucking don't, the name is Adam....
