Chapter 31 - Chapter 31

Rio's heart quickened. The professor's messages were always carefully considered, and this request seemed more pressing than usual. Without a moment's hesitation, Rio made up his mind.

As night fell and the pursuit of Dr. Rega and the group intensified, Rio realized it was unwise to remain in the forest. They had no choice but to seek refuge in a nearby cave for the night.

Rio instructed Batho to rest first, assuring him that they would depart at first light.

Rio's body felt heavy with exhaustion as he settled into a makeshift watch position at the mouth of the cave. His mind, however, was far from restful, still reeling from the events of the day and the weight of the revelations Batho had shared. The cave was filled with the sounds of the night, the rustle of leaves, and the distant calls of nocturnal creatures.

Meanwhile, Batho seemed to have no trouble drifting off to sleep. His breathing was steady and deep, a stark contrast to Rio's restless state. Despite his fatigue, Rio's mind was sharp, his senses alert to any potential threats that might approach their sanctuary in the darkness.

As the night deepened, the cave enveloped Rio in darkness, broken only by the faint glow of the AD on his wrist. The sounds of the night surrounded him, a symphony of wildlife that seemed to echo the chaos of his thoughts. The distant howls of animals, the haunting hoots of owls, and the rhythmic chirping of insects filled the air, creating a cacophony of noise that both comforted and unsettled him.

In the midst of these sounds, Rio's mind wandered back to the events of the day. Just a few days ago, he had been a simple man, working in his basement, selling fake passes to make ends meet. Now, he found himself caught up in a web of conspiracy involving a mysterious company and a group of people displaced in time. Everything felt surreal, like a dream he couldn't wake up from.

But despite the strangeness of it all, Rio knew one thing for certain - he was determined to uncover the truth, no matter where it led him. And as he sat in the cave, surrounded by the sounds of the night, he braced himself for the challenges that lay ahead.

As the first light of dawn crept into the cave, it painted the rocky walls with a soft, golden hue. The shadows retreated, revealing the rugged beauty of the cave's interior.

He approached Batho, gently shaking him awake. Batho stirred, his eyes blinking open slowly. Rio whispered, "It's time to go. We need to leave before they find us."

Batho nodded, rubbing his eyes sleepily. He gathered his things quickly, and the two of them silently made their way out of the cave. The forest was alive with the sounds of morning, and Rio felt a sense of urgency pushing him forward.

They walked for what seemed like hours, following Batho's lead through the dense undergrowth. Rio couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that Dr. Rega's people were hot on their trail.

Batho led Rio to where his Hyperloop Pod was parked.

Without a word, Rio followed Batho onto the Hyperloop Pod. The sleek vehicle hummed to life, its engines thrumming with power.

As they neared Professor Landon's place, Rio's thoughts were consumed by the metallic object he had given to the professor for analysis. Batho's Hyperloop Pod sped through the landscape, the scenery blurring into streaks of color. Rio's eyes were fixed on the road ahead, but his mind was elsewhere.

He couldn't shake the feeling of unease. What was the significance of the object? What had Professor Landon discovered?

Rio parked his Hyperloop Pod and turned to Batho, contemplating whether to leave him in the safety of the vehicle while he went to meet Professor Landon. However, a sense of responsibility washed over him, and he decided it was safer for Batho to accompany him. Together, they made their way to Professor Landon's place.

When they arrived, Professor Landon opened the door, his expression one of surprise at the sight of Rio accompanied by a young boy.

Professor Landon jokingly remarked, "I didn't know you had a kid, Rio."

Rio returned the smile but didn't offer an explanation. The less Professor Landon knew, the better.

As they entered Professor Landon's house, Rio couldn't help but marvel at the advanced technology around him once again. Holographic displays flickered with information, and the room was filled with the soft hum of unseen machinery.

"What have you discovered?" Rio asked.

The professor remained silent, leading Rio into a dark room in his house.

Rio's heart raced with anticipation as he followed Professor Landon into the dark room. The air felt cool and musty, and Rio's footsteps echoed softly against the hard floor. The only light came from a few dim overhead lights, casting long shadows that danced around the edges of the room.

In the center of the room, on a pedestal, lay the metallic object Rio had given to Professor Landon. It gleamed softly in the dim light, its intricate markings and strange symbols catching the eye. Around it were display cases containing other mysterious objects, adding to the air of mystery and intrigue.

"What have you discovered?" Rio asked again, his voice barely above a whisper, as if afraid to break the silence that enveloped them.

Professor Landon turned to Rio, his expression serious. "I've been analyzing the object you brought me, and I've made some interesting discoveries," he said, leading Rio closer to the display.

"This piece of metallic object had cost me a fortune as I studied it," Professor Landon said, shaking his head and giving a wry laugh.

Rio stared at the object, unsure of what the professor meant. He watched as Professor Landon wheeled in a cart laden with various items—steer wrenches, copper wires, brass keys, iron nails, tin cans, and silver spoons.

Both Rio and Batho watched in confusion, wondering what the professor was going to do next.

The heavy door clicked shut with a finality that echoed in the dimly lit room. Professor Landon's movements were deliberate, almost ritualistic, as he checked and rechecked the door, ensuring no light or sound could escape. Rio watched, a knot of confusion tightening in his chest.

"Come, stand over here," the professor said, gesturing towards a corner of the room. Batho and Rio exchanged puzzled glances before complying.

With careful precision, the professor lifted the metallic object from its case, cradling it in his hands as if it were a fragile treasure. He turned it, adjusting its angles with a practiced hand, his movements fluid and purposeful.

As Professor Landon worked, the metallic object seemed to come alive in his hands, catching the faint light and casting intricate shadows across the room. Batho watched with wide eyes, his curiosity piqued by the mysterious device.

Finally, the professor stepped back, the object now positioned in a way that seemed to defy gravity. "This, my friends," he began, his voice tinged with excitement, "is no ordinary object. It is a key, a key to unlocking the mysteries of time and space."

Rio's heart skipped a beat. "Time and space? What do you mean?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

The professor's eyes gleamed with a mixture of awe and determination.

All the objects in the room were drawn towards the metallic device, their movements erratic and unpredictable. The magnetic force emanating from the device grew stronger by the second, causing even the sturdy steer wrenches to warp and change shape as they were pulled closer.

The room was filled with a cacophony of clanging metal and creaking wood as the objects collided and merged in mid-air. The once familiar items seemed to lose their solidity, their forms twisting and contorting under the powerful magnetic influence.

Rio, Batho, and Professor Landon watched in awe and horror as the scene unfolded before them. The sheer power of the device was unlike anything they had ever witnessed, and it filled the room with a sense of danger and uncertainty.

As the objects continued to be pulled towards the metallic device, the air itself seemed to crackle with energy, and Rio could feel his hair standing on end. He knew they were witnessing something extraordinary, something that could change everything they thought they knew about the world.

The metallic objects were now a twisted mass of unrecognizable metal, their original forms lost in the chaotic convergence. Despite this, the magnetic pull of the metallic device continued unabated, warping and reshaping the already distorted shapes into even more bizarre configurations.

The room was filled with the sound of metal grinding against metal, the cacophony growing louder with each passing moment.

It was a mesmerizing yet unsettling sight, as if the laws of physics themselves were being rewritten before their very eyes.

All the metallic objects had merged into one large piece, its shape continuously changing under the influence of the magnetic power. Professor Landon stepped back to the center of the room, holding the large, distorted metallic mass. He scanned the object for an opening in the metallic device, his finger tracing a path towards the core of the magnetic power.

With a swift motion, Professor Landon plunged the mass into the heart of the magnetic field. There was a moment of tense anticipation, and then, suddenly, the mass dropped from the device, clattering loudly onto the table.

Rio and Batho stared at the now motionless mass, their breaths caught in their throats. The room was filled with a heavy silence, broken only by the sound of their racing hearts.

"What... what just happened?" Rio finally managed to speak, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Rio, this device is more than just a data storage unit," Professor Landon exclaimed, gesturing to the metallic object. "It contains a powerful magnetic field, unlike any I've ever encountered."

Rio's eyes widened in surprise. "A magnetic field? What's its purpose?"

"It seems to have a unique ability to selectively attract certain types of metal," the professor explained. "The first time I activated it, every metal object in my lab was pulled towards it. It was quite a sight, but also quite costly."

Batho, who had been quietly observing, spoke up. "So, what does this mean? Why would someone create such a device?"

"That's what we need to find out," Rio said, his mind racing with possibilities. "There must be a reason why this device exists."

The professor nodded. "Indeed, and we must be cautious. This device could be incredibly valuable, but it could also be incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands."

Rio stood before the device, mesmerized by its intricate design and the mysteries it held. He couldn't help but wonder about the mind that had conceived such a creation. The implications of its existence were vast, hinting at a world of secrets and power struggles he had only glimpsed before.

"Thank you, Professor," Rio said, breaking the silence that had settled in the room. "You've shown me something truly remarkable."

Professor Landon nodded, a knowing smile playing on his lips. "It was my pleasure, Rio. Few get to witness such marvels."

As they prepared to leave, Professor Landon's gaze lingered on Batho, who had been unusually silent throughout their visit. Rio noticed the professor's glance.

Rio looked at Professor Landon, his expression grave. "Professor, there are things I cannot divulge. It's for your safety."

The professor's eyes narrowed slightly, but he nodded. "I understand, Rio. Sometimes, ignorance is a shield. Perhaps our paths will cross again in more auspicious times."

"Thank you for your understanding, Professor. Until next time," Rio said, turning to leave.

As he walked away, Rio's mind raced with the burden of his secrets, knowing that the truth he concealed could change everything.

As Rio exited the professor's abode, his senses heightened. The air seemed charged with an unseen tension.

Batho's pallid complexion caught his eye, a stark contrast against the dimly lit surroundings. Batho, usually full of youthful energy, appeared weakened, his breaths shallow and rapid. With a hesitant gesture, Batho exposed his torso, revealing a mosaic of discolored blotches, like alien constellations against his skin.

"Batho, what's happening to your body?" Rio's voice was filled with fear and concern as he examined Batho's condition. The red and blue blotches on his skin seemed to pulse ominously, and Batho's labored breathing only added to Rio's anxiety.
