They had been driving for over two hours now.
When Abel had asked where they were headed, Jake's answer had been short and precise: "Out of town."
And out of town it was.
By now, they were miles away from Kansas City, deep into the countryside. The tarmac road had disappeared close to thirty minutes ago, replaced by a bumpy, dirt path.
The road was a mess of dust and loose gravel, with potholes that made the sedan bounce and creak with every dip. Abel couldn't help but wonder how the car was still holding together. Each jolt felt like a final blow to the sedan's already worn suspension.
But Jake didn't seem bothered.
His hands were steady on the wheel, his gaze focused ahead like they were on a smooth highway.
