Chapter 1 - A normal day turned into a nightmare

I walk towards my class without any enthusiasm nor haste. The school bell that was ringing to announce the beginning of class sounded off in the distance.

While walking, I suddenly get bumped by a passing student in the crowded hallway. I turn around, with the intention to scold or punch him for his carelessness, but as I did so I saw a girl my age apologizing.

It was a girl. A cute blonde with her hair tied into a ponytail, though the green eyes that stared straight back at me had an irritated look to them. She was also dressed in school uniform. The girl was currently on the floor, trying to get up. She probably tripped or did not see me due to my large size.

The girl picked up her books and rose up. As she did so, she made a snide comment. "Oh? Are you just repeating a year again?" She was indirectly calling me an old man by asking such a question. She had to be referring to my huge stature, which made people believe I was older than I was.

I roll my eyes at her snide comment. I was only 17, but people thought I was much older due to my mature behavior. This was because I had lived on my own for the majority of my life, and I frequently trained for several hours a day. This had made me more mature than other boys my age. I cross my arms and look down at her "The kindergarten is not here, you are wrong in the building"

That made the blonde jaw drop "W-what?!? Oh shut up"

Her surprised face made me want to laugh. But I maintained my composure instead, letting out a small chuckle but not letting her know that I was smiling. "Oh? I should shut up? You're the one who ran into me. Did your mother not teach you to be more careful where you walk?" I say with a cocky look on my face and I look down at her.

She rolls her eyes and crosses her arms "It's not my problem that there was a wall in front of me that moves slower than a snail"

A wall. She referred to me as a wall. I was not bothered by her comment, if anything I found it amusing. It amused me to no end that she could be so rude without flinching. She had a rude tongue but a kind appearance. I then responded to her comment in a similar tone to hers "It's not my problem that you are too inattentive and can't pay attention to the people around you."

I let out a small laugh, a bit amused by her attitude. She scoffs at me and walks away, probably heading to her class, which we are apparently in the same class. It would be interesting to see how she would act now, having to see me nearly on a daily basis.

I stare at her as she does a quick scan of the classroom, and her eyes immediately go towards me, she is definitely annoyed at my presence. The girl is definitely not someone who gets along with others. I watch as the teacher makes her introduce herself to the class, and she seems annoyed that she has to do so.

The classroom goes silent as everyone listens to the girl introduce herself. I found her accent to be quite nice. Her introduction was concise and short. She seemed to be a bit unsure of what to say. But it was good enough. She introduced herself as Yi Han . She was 18, just a bit older than me. The people in the room were impressed that she had lived in China and had now come to live in Japan. As I stare at her, I let a small laugh escape the corner of my lips. She gives me a look after hearing my laugh. I can tell that she is furious that I laughed on her "I'm not sure why I should've cared to know your zodiac sign" I mutter under my breath.

She points at me "YOU SHUT UP"

My laugh turns into a small chuckle. She snaps at me and tells me to shut up. It was amusing to see her become so angry. Her anger could have been caused by the fact that she was trying to introduce herself to everyone and a laugh could be considered a insult. Either way, I decide to say something back to her. "Make me."

The teacher, annoyed by the bickering between me and the new girl, decides to assign us seats. The teacher points to a spot in the classroom, and when Yi Han looked towards the direction of where the teacher was pointing, she realized that she was going to sit next to me. She was clearly upset about this. I noticed her glaring at me even after she sat down. The teacher started lecturing the class about a few things, so we were quiet while he was speaking.

While the teacher was lecturing to the class, Yi Han sat down and crossed her arms and legs, ignoring me. It was a bit funny to see her try to ignore me even though we were sitting next to one another, but I couldn't blame her for it. Since we had the first interaction between us, she probably considered me annoying. I couldn't blame her, though, since I thought she was rude as well.

I was used to people despising me, especially since my high school's classes seemed to not like arrogant people. I was aware of the fact that my arrogant and condescending attitude made people dislike me. However, I wasn't very bothered by it since I wasn't interested in making friends. Perhaps this new girl was going to dislike me the least in this school. I didn't mind her rude attitude since it had a certain charm to it. She seemed to be someone who would act rudely to others, not just me.

My attention was then distracted from the teacher, as my friend Suky looked over towards Yi Han with a smug grin. He gave me a small, knowing glance and then turned to speak to her. "Hey blondie, you got snap?" He asked her, trying to flirt with her. He was most likely trying to tease me since he was well aware of my lack of interest towards romantic relationships.

Yi Han shows no interest in Suky and just silently ignores him completely, not giving him any attention. I couldn't help but notice how she did not even look his way. Her behavior was similar to mine, as she didn't mind being rude and ignore others in an uncaring manner. She seemed to be ignoring him completely. Suky looked over towards me with an expression that read, "she really isn't going to respond?"

Suky looks more intensely towards her after the fact she does not respond to his attempt at flirting. This annoyed Yi Han, as she lets out a small groan and looks at him back with a annoyed look. It seems like he was just trying to bother her as much as possible. I continued to stare at the interaction between them both, and I decided to join in as well. "Why don't you answer him? Are you too shy to talk?"

"Yeah"

She responds to me in a sarcastic tone, which was to be expected from her. She was rude in all cases. I couldn't blame her for it though, since it didn't seem like she was interested in speaking to anyone. However, we were going to be sitting right next to one another so maybe it was just best to get along. I continue to talk to her, but she continues to ignore me. It seems she doesn't even want to try to become friends with anyone, not just me.

"Why did you leave your home country?"

She then looks at the teacher as she says in a low voice "Why are you asking?" The teacher who was previously lecturing about a small topic had just noticed the whispering and decides to approach our desks. He is now leaning forwards and asking what we are talking about. Now it is up to us for how we handle the situation.

We both quickly pointed at Suky, making him the center of the cause for this interaction between us. Suky was obviously annoyed because he wasn't expecting to be blamed for the whole thing. He was just trying to poke us both and didn't actually care for a answer. The teacher looks over at Suky and his expression seems to show annoyance. "You three, Detention, now"

The teacher is clearly annoyed with the three of us. He doesn't seem to care that it was Suky's fault. He just saw us as three students who were being disruptive and distracting the class from their lesson. Yi Han gets annoyed at the teacher, and she lets out a annoyed sigh. "WhAT?!?? Oh cool, detention in my first hour in this high-school" she says in a sarcastic tone.

We all leave the class together, following us since we knew where detention class was. As we walked down the hallway, Yi Han mumbles something behind us which we both hear clear as day, "So this isn't the first time you've got detention..." She was referring to the fact that me and Suky get in detention more than few times. I could not help but laugh at her attempt to be subtle, since she said it loudly enough for us both to hear.

The three of us finally arrive at the detention class and are about to enter. However, Yi Han stops us all by standing in front of the door, blocking our entrance.

"Wait wait wait.."

I look over at her, curious as to why she was stopping us from entering. She was blocking the way, making her and I have to face each other. I then decide to ask her what she wants. "What is it?" I ask her.

She crosses her arms and smirks "Do we really have to get detention? Just of this stupid dude?" she points at Suky

She has a point. Maybe we should let the annoying Suky get the detention alone. He was the one who started this whole mess, so why should me and her have to get a detention with him? I also hated him for getting us all into this mess. I also found it a bit humorous that she called him annoying, since it is true. "Perhaps. Suky did start the whole thing.. why don't we let him get detention by himself like the annoying child he is?"

"Hey, I don't want to be alone! Bro, you know how scary Miss Kim is!"

While Suky complained about the fact that he's going to be alone, both Yi Han and I rolled our eyes. Suky was just being a bit of a coward. However, he did bring up a good point. The teacher that runs detention is quite infamous for her strict and mean personality.

"Oh please.. you're scared of Miss Kim? You're such a baby." I said, not able to help but laugh at the fact that Suky was complaining and feared the old teacher.

Suky follows after we both walk away, seeming like he was a bit annoyed at both of us. He didn't want to be alone and seemed to be quite scared of going into detention alone. The teacher that usually handles detention, Kim, was not someone he wanted to be around. She was quite scary and strict.

"Really? So you're not scared of Miss Kim?" I say in a joking tone, as we both laugh at him for claiming that he's not scared of her.

Yi Han looks at us surprised "Oh? Is this" Miss Kim " that scary?"

Miss Kim is known for being an intimidating and terrifying teacher, and she is known for handing out punishments such as "100 laps around the school." It is understandable why someone would be afraid of her, especially a kid like Suky. The fact that Yi Han didn't know who Miss Kim was, was shocking to both of us.

"How do you not who Miss Kim is? She's a very well-known teacher that runs a very strict detention class, where the punishments are quite extreme." I ask her, raising my eyebrow.

She scoffs and pokes myforehead "Are you dumb? I just moved here"

Her words make sense since she is a new student and has just moved here. I chuckle at her poking my forehead. "No one has told you about Miss Kim? You'd think that would be the first thing someone would warn you about when you move here." I ask her. As we continued to walk away from the detention room, Suky just pouted and followed silently behind us.

Yi Han looks around and says "Hmm I like this school better... So spacious"

The school we are currently walking in is quite large and spacious, to the point where it was difficult to get lost inside. The buildings were also quite large, so I believed the school was funded quite well. It was nice to see that Yi Han seemed to like the school. It was surprising to see that Suky didn't like it as much as she did.

"Trust me Yi Han... This school is the worst" he says, rolling his eyes and trying to convince her otherwise.

She laughs "Ah.. So now? What should we do"

Both Yi Han and I are now looking at one another, wondering what we should do. It wouldn't be wise for us to just skip detention, so we have to find a way to avoid it. It would be very bad to be caught skipping and having to face the consequences of it.

"Well, we can't really get out of it.. detention starts in about 10 minutes. We can sit somewhere and wait?" I suggest to her, wondering if she had any better of an idea.

"Maybe we should go to cafeteria and eat?"

"Eating doesn't seem like a bad idea. Maybe the teacher won't notice us if we're sitting in the cafeteria." I say to her, thinking that sitting in the cafeteria is better than sitting in detention. It's worth a shot, especially since we only have 10 minutes. It might be possible to avoid detention entirely thanks to this idea.

The two of us tip-toe towards the cafeteria, trying not to get noticed by anyone and make even more trouble. It would be nice to avoid detention all together and eat something delicious at the cafeteria. Suky, being annoyed at us both, just stayed behind quietly and followed us as he kept on pouting.

Once we arrived at the cafeteria, we took a seat at an empty table and tried to hide ourselves from any teacher that would pass by.

While we ate, I was thinking about how we immediately got a good vibe and understanding each other almost instantly once we met. She was quite rude and had a condescending attitude towards people, but she was also quite smart and funny. She would be someone who I'd enjoy being friends with. After a few moments of thinking, I turned towards her and asked her something.

"So what's your story? How come you moved to this country from China?"

"Well… my parents sent me here," she sipped her coffee, "I was a problem… Hehe"

It was quite interesting to hear that she was a bit of trouble in China, to the point where her parents had to send her to another country. It was very fitting for her attitude that she was a bit of trouble. I chuckle a bit upon hearing this.

"I guess that makes sense. You definitely give off the trouble maker vibes." I say to her, sipping on my coffee as well.

Suky was sitting in a seat close to us, and he looks quite sad and bored. He seemed to be very annoyed with us both, and wanted to just be left alone. However, he now has to sit and listen to both of us have a conversation and banter. I notice Yi Han poking his cheek and making him blush. It seems like she likes to mess with him as well. Suky seems to be quite offended by her poking of his cheek, and he decides to bury his face into his arms in response. I am slightly surprised by how Suky is acting, since he usually acts so brave.

The peaceful atmosphere of the cafeteria immediately gets disrupted. I can hear a yell coming from a distance, and I turn my head in the direction of where the yell is coming from. I see that a male teacher is running down the hallway, yelling out loud. I see that as he runs closer, he has this enraged look on his face. It's not a face I'd want to see while I'm eating lunch.

"Go to safety!"

The entire atmosphere changes quickly, as soon the teacher yells at us to go to safety. As he finishes his sentence, he gets bitten by a student zombie and gets infected and starts turning. I react quite quickly to this and grab Yi Han's hand while jumping out of our chairs. We quickly run away from the cafeteria and down the hallway, away from the infected teacher and the growing crowd of student zombies. "Suky, see you at the boys locker!" I yelled not looking back at him.

As the both of us quickly run down the hall, we can hear more student zombies and teachers getting infected and screaming. We have to keep running, as more zombies are appearing within the school. I keep on dragging Yi Han along as we continue to run. We run down multiple corridors and hallways, making many turns to get away from the horde of zombies that are chasing after us.

As we continue to run, the number of students and teachers turning into zombies increases, as well as the number of zombies chasing after us. It's getting quite tense for both of us, as we're trying hard to not get bitten or caught. We make sure to take any paths that are the opposite way of where the zombies are coming from. I don't even want to imagine what would happen if a zombie did bite and infect us…

"W-Where's is Suky?!"

I suddenly freeze when she looks around for Suky, realizing that the three of us got separated. I also look around and wonder where he went, because I definitely didn't see him anywhere close by. It looks like all of this chaos caused us to get separated from him, and he must've ran off on his own. I hope he doesn't get infected by any of the zombies and gets out alive.

"I don't see him here... I hope he's okay." I say to her.

I keep on looking around for Suky in the locker room, hoping he made it out fine. I hear some zombies coming towards the locker room, but they don't sound close. I look at Yi Han with a worried look on my face, wondering what we should do now.

"I think that we should stay here for now.. the zombies don't seem to know that we're in here." I say in a low voice and try to make it sound reassuring towards her as I speak.

The sound of the zombies outside suddenly breaks our concentration, as we hear them growing much louder than before. We seem to be stuck within the locker room, with no way out if the zombies break down the door.

The noise of the growing horde of zombies seems to be distracting enough that I can't even respond to her. It feels like we're running out of time, as the zombies continue to get louder outside.

"GOSH.. That brat"

I sigh in frustration. It seems like the only thing I can do is agree with her frustration.

"He must've ran off on his own. God, who knows where he's going right now or what kind of trouble he's getting into." I sigh in frustration, feeling a bit annoyed at the fact that he just abandoned the both of us.

"I shouldn't come to Japan... Pffft"

If she had not moved to Japan, she never would have had to have dealt with all of this chaos and stress. She would just be living freely back in China without the threat of a deadly zombie outbreak. I look at her with a slight smile on my face.

"I mean, you couldn't have known that this would've happened, so you're not really at fault. Just bad luck, I guess..."

"Aren't you scared for your family?"

She seems to be a very caring person, since she is concerned about my family. However, there is one problem. I don't have a family, at least not anymore.

"I don't have a family. I live alone." I say in a cold tone, although I feel a bit bad for disappointing her.

I can see it on her face that I completely caught her off guard. She was probably not expecting me to answer her question that way. I keep on just looking directly at her.

"I live by myself. My family died a long time ago. There's no one left..."

She looks away from my gaze "Oh... Sorry" she looks up at the ceiling "How long we will have to wait?..."

I was surprised by her apology and the fact that she was looking away from me. I was expecting her to just try to brush it off or ignore the entire situation.

"We will have to stay here until the school is sealed off by the military. We have to wait until they come and eliminate all of these zombies." I also lean back against the wall, as I feel my back becoming tired from standing still.

The smell of rotting corpses immediately hits our noses the moment the both of us lean against the wall. It's quite overwhelming, making me want to plug my mouth and nose to avoid smelling all of the dead bodies. The smell is a mixture of blood, decay, and rotten bodies. It's quite terrible, and the longer we stay in the room, the worse it gets.

I look up at the trap-door, wondering if we should even open it. It was a trap-door used to access the attic, but I was worried that it would attract more of the zombies. The smell is already bad enough, and last thing we need is to alert more of the zombie horde.

"This might sound like a bad idea, but we could try to access the attic through that trap door. We could stay there until someone comes and rescues us, as they're bound to clear things out above ground. But, we would risk attracting more attention..."

Yi Han nods and I reach my hands up towards the trap-door and start to carefully unlatch it. Once it finally opens, I am able to see the ladder for the attic, but it is a bit high. I have to lift Yi Han up so she can get up to it. Once I finally lift her up, she starts climbing the ladder quickly. The attic looks like it would be big enough for the both of us to fit in. It could definitely be our safe spot until anyone comes to find and rescue us.Â
