I sat on the couch, nervously fidgeting with the hem of my shirt as I waited for Chris to arrive. I knew I had to have this talk with him, to be completely honest about where I was in my life and what I needed. The doorbell rang, and my heart skipped a beat. Taking a deep breath, I stood up and walked to the door, forcing a smile as I opened it.
"Hey, Chris," I greeted him, my voice a little shaky. "Come on in."
"Hey, Shayla," he replied, his warm smile instantly putting me at ease. "What's up? You sounded serious on the phone."
We sat down on the couch, and I took his hand in mine, looking into his eyes. "Chris, I want to be honest with you about where I am right now. I care about you a lot, and I love the time we spend together. But after everything that's happened with Terrance and the divorce, I feel like I need some time to find myself again."
