Chereads / My Cheating Husband's Karma / Chapter 2 - Pretense of Normalcy

Chapter 2 - Pretense of Normalcy

As the days dragged on, I found myself trapped in a suffocating silence, my heart heavy with the weight of the secrets I carried. Every moment spent pretending to be blissfully unaware of Terrance's betrayal was like a knife twisting in my chest. But I knew that biding my time was the only way to execute my plan without raising suspicion.

I feigned illness whenever Terrance was home, using the excuse to retreat to the safety of my bedroom and avoid any intimacy with him. It wasn't a complete lie, the idea of him touching me turned my stomach, all sense of attraction gone. It was difficult to allow him to kiss me goodbye each morning. He seemed oblivious to my suffering, too preoccupied with his own affairs to notice the distance growing between us. then again he had another to give his affections to so i guess he didn't care anyway.

Then came the news of his impending business trip, a convenient excuse for him to spend the weekend away from home. I knew this was my chance to make my escape, to flee from the prison of lies and deceit that had become my marriage. Who knows if he was even really going on a business trip? I had trusted him so blindly and i was paying for it.

With a steely resolve, I began to make preparations, packing up mine and the kids belongings and making arrangements for our departure. The van's tire had been fixed, and the day before Terrance left i had maintenance done on the van as well to prepare for the long drive, and we were ready to hit the road.

I took stock of the cash in the house, surprised to find several stashes I had been unaware of. What else had that bastard been hiding from me? With a sense of grim satisfaction, I gathered up the money, along with any jewelry that held value, knowing that it would be our lifeline in the uncertain days ahead.

After pawning off our possessions, I counted nearly $8,000 in cash, enough to tide us over until I could find a job and get back on my feet. It was a small comfort in the face of the upheaval we were about to embark on.

Sunday afternoon arrived, and with it, the promise of a new beginning. As we hit the open road, the weight of the past week began to lift from my shoulders, replaced by a cautious optimism for the future.

I glanced in the rearview mirror at Ethan and Shawn, their faces filled with excitement at the adventure that lay ahead. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, I allowed myself to believe that maybe, just maybe, we could find happiness again. And as the miles stretched out before us, I vowed to do whatever it took to make that dream a reality.

As we pulled up to Tasha's house in Georgia, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over me. The long drive had been exhausting, but seeing the sight of Tasha's welcoming home filled me with a sense of hope for the future.

"Wow, Mom, this place is awesome!" Ethan exclaimed, his face pressed against the car window as he took in the sight of Tasha's house.

"Yeah, it's so cool!" Shawn chimed in from the back seat, his eyes wide with excitement.

I smiled at my boys, grateful for their resilience in the face of our recent upheaval.

"I'm glad you guys like it. Aunt Tasha's been looking forward to seeing you two."

As we stepped out of the car, the front door swung open, and Tasha emerged, her face breaking into a wide grin as she enveloped us in a warm hug.

"Welcome home, you guys!" she exclaimed, ruffling Ethan's hair and scooping Shawn up into her arms. "I've missed you guys so much."

"We missed you too, Aunt Tasha!" Ethan exclaimed, his eyes shining with excitement.

Tasha ushered us inside, and the boys immediately set off exploring their new surroundings, Ethan bounding up the stairs to claim his room while Shawn curled up on the loveseat for a nap.

Once the boys were occupied, Tasha and I settled into the living room, the weight of the past week hanging heavy in the air between us.

"How are you holding up, Shayla?" Tasha asked gently, her eyes filled with concern.

I sighed, sinking back into the cushions of the sofa. "Honestly, Tash, I feel like I've been living in a nightmare. I never imagined Terrance would betray me like this. I thought we had something real, you know?"

Tasha reached out, squeezing my hand in a gesture of comfort.

"I know, Shayla. It's devastating when someone we trust betrays us like that. But you're strong, and you have us to lean on."

I nodded, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes.

"I just don't know if I can ever trust anyone again, Tash. How am I supposed to believe in true love when it feels like it's all just a lie? Nine years of my life just destroyed." Tasha's expression softened, her gaze filled with empathy.

"I know it's hard to see right now, but not everyone isn't like Terrance. You'll find someone who deserves your love, I promise." I sighed, wiping away my tears with the back of my hand. "Now im looking back on every moment wondering did i miss the signs? was i a bad wife? Did i neglect him somehow? Did he ever really love me?" Most of all.....why?" She shook her head at me "it doesn't matter why. Nothing he could ever say or feel would justify it....cheaters cheat because thats what they wanted to do in that moment. It also isnt like he made one mistake, he kept seeing her, had a child with her, betrayed his wife, defiled his marriage. This was him and him alone, so fuck him." I giggled and nodded "yeah, fuck him" we both laughed again.

"I hope you're right, Tash. But for now, I just need to focus on rebuilding my life for me and the boys."Tasha nodded in agreement, a determined gleam in her eye.

"Speaking of which, I have an idea. Why don't we start our own landscaping business? You have a knack for gardening, and I have all the necessary tools to get started." I perked up at the suggestion, the glimmer of hope reigniting within me.

"That's a great idea, Tash! With your expertise and my green thumb, we could really make something of it."Tasha grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Exactly! And I have even more good news. There's a garden expo coming up this Friday, and I think you should go. It's the perfect opportunity to network and maybe even land some wealthy clients." I nodded, feeling a surge of determination coursing through me.

"You're right, Tash. This could be just what we need to get our business off the ground and have some steady income so im not living in your house forever."

With a plan in place and newfound hope in my heart, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, I had my best friend by my side, ready to face them head-on. I looked around at my boys things scattered about, already having made themselves at home in their new surroundings, I felt a glimmer of optimism for the future. We may have been broken, but together, we were ready to build something beautiful.

The Garden Expo was a grand affair, bustling with excitement and filled with the vibrant colors and fragrant scents of blooming flowers. As I stepped inside, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer variety of landscaping wonders on display. The organizers had spared no expense in showcasing the latest innovations in gardening and landscaping, from exotic plant varieties to state-of-the-art greenhouses. Everywhere I looked, there was something new and exciting to discover.

I smoothed down the fabric of my little black dress, feeling a surge of confidence as I mingled with the crowd. The ticket I had purchased had specified formal attire only, and I was glad I had splurged on something special for the occasion.

As I wandered through the rows of exhibits, my eyes were drawn to a particular booth demonstrating the benefits of greenhouse design. The man behind the display caught my attention, his neat locs tied back to give him a professional appearance.

I approached the booth, studying the design with a critical eye. Something about it seemed off, and I couldn't shake the feeling that there was room for improvement.

"Excuse me," I said, catching the man's attention.

"Do you happen to have a tape measure I could borrow?"

He quirked an eyebrow but nodded, handing me the requested tool.

"Sure, here you go. What do you need it for?"

I pointed to the greenhouse design, gesturing to certain areas.

"I couldn't help but notice that the ideal depth should be deeper in places that experience harsh freezes. It helps keep the area below the freeze line, ensuring better temperature control." The man's eyes widened in surprise, impressed by my observation.

"Wow, you really know your stuff. How do you know all this?" I offered him a smile.

"I just moved here from New York, and I have a bachelor's degree in landscape design."

He introduced himself as Chris, and soon we were engaged in effortless conversation about plants and gardening. It felt refreshing to connect with someone who shared my passion for landscaping.

Before I knew it, I had handed him my business card, feeling a pang of regret at the thought of parting ways. But duty called, and I forced myself to explore the rest of the expo, mingling with other attendees and handing out my business cards until they were all gone. As I made my way home, my mind was abuzz with possibilities. Despite the uncertainty of my situation, I couldn't help but feel a spark of excitement for the future. And as I glanced down at the cute bag of freebies in my hand, I knew that today was just the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
