The operation on Mrs. Chan was said to be successful, but she was in a coma when Hina and I arrived at the hospital and nobody could tell for sure when she'd come around - if ever.
When we entered the patient room where Hina's mother was recovering, Hina ran to her directly, collapsed onto her knees, and cried holding the motionless lady's hand. Tactfully, the room was kept clear and everybody waited outside and took turns to go see the late Chairman's wife so that Hina also got to have her alone time with her.
Which made it feel rather odd for me to stand in the room behind Hina in what was a very private family affair.
Not knowing what to say, I just stood there watching Hina cry, bringing her lips close to her mother's ears, whispering things I could not hear.
After about half an hour of intense silence in the room, Hina wiped her tears as we headed out to the corridor.
