Chapter 4 - Nova

This is something I have and never will talk to people about, not even with my kind. Thankfully Sophie had this skill with her, one I doubted she was even using but it may help her in the future. It doesn't even seem I will have a choice, considering how powerful it is. This memory will be recorded whether I want it to or not.

In the first place, the girl was strange. A human, a child, is no different from another. Black hair, brown eyes, tan skin. She looked no different from the people around, nothing significant.

That is until you sense her energy. It was hidden well, likely by a blessing or a skill, but because of my skills, I could see it. It was pure white, soft, and radiating off of her. The amount was enormous, far above anyone around her.

At first, I thought it was because of a blessing, like one from a god or spirit. Yet the energy was all her own, not bearing any connections from higher beings.

It was my curiosity towards the girl that got me caught by the townspeople. I spent hours trying to escape them and because of the stupid laws, I couldn't use magic to get away fully.

It wasn't that it wasn't natural, it is the nature of things. Humans chased us, caught us, pixies granted their wish, and then they were freed. It was a hassle in the end, and because of the number of people, I didn't want to be caught.

It was when I was running out of stamina did she come, the same girl that got me into this mess. She caught me before one of the men did, and hid me from them.

At first, I thought she would come back, so I left as soon as the cost was clear and my strength returned. That was when I felt the contract form, which made me furious. I was only to get in contact with a person and now I was bound to someone.

Fighting my fury, I searched for the girl's energy to return my debt. Finding it in a home nearby, I gathered magic berries and put them in her room. I waited for her to return to properly give thanks, but I grew hungry and started eating them.

Then she walked in on me doing so, and in my panic, I stupidly slammed into the window.

I don't remember much after that, I hit my head pretty hard so it was hard to focus. I think she picked me up, just as the pain began to amplify. Then the pain subsided and I felt like I was floating.

When I woke up the next morning, I found myself on a pillow wrapped gently in a blanket. I saw the girl curled up on her bed, breathing softly. I started to leave but then I felt her energy, but it wasn't just around me, it was inside of me.

I looked at my form and found small stripes of white energy mixed with my blue, slowly fading into it. It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't normal. Most humans wouldn't be able to lend energy to another let alone to a fae.

Getting closer to her, I touched her nose feeling the power running through her veins. "What are you…?"

****

"What is the real reason for staying with her, Novelia?" The guild master, this high elf disguised as a human, asked, her gray eyes narrowed.

"Why do you allow her to get closer to you, Theadoria," I asked in exchange. "Or why you haven't contacted the council about her existence."

To this, she glared at me before sighing. "She is still a child, one that doesn't know about the world or how things work."

I huffed. "So you take pity on her. You've grown soft."

She then slammed the desk making me amused. "Don't call me soft!' she exclaimed angrily, before sighing. "It's not like I can do anything, not with Mar on as her guardian."

I shiver, realizing who she was talking about. "That lady… she's a-"

"Don't say it." the elf said sternly, a slight smirk on her face. "If you anger her, you'll be wishing for death."

I nod, remembering that old woman's aura. How Sophie was oblivious to it, I don't know, but her energy may be able to counter it, rendering the bloodlust useless. I don't know whether to be impressed or extremely worried for the girl's safety.

"Mar took a liking to the girl since she wandered into town. Can't say why though. Even with her immense energy, Sophie is just a young child unable to fight." Theadora explained, fiddling with one of her braids.

"Maybe she wanted to play with her," I muttered, feeling uneasy about allowing that child to be with that witch.

The elf only chuckled, catching me off guard. "Mar wouldn't do anything she thought wouldn't be worth her time. She's not a conniving person, I doubt she has an evil bone in her body."

She then looked down, a dark mark on her hand. "No… Mar has another reason for raising that girl. Whether or not it is for a dark purpose is not my business. She already made that clear to me the moment she took Sophie under her care."

I stare at her in fear. "She didn't-"

Theadora chuckled again. "Mar didn't threaten me, but she did make it clear that I didn't have a choice in this matter." She smiles slightly. "Doubt Sophie knows about it. The girl isn't oblivious, but she is a kind soul. Not only that, but Mar tends to act more calmly."

She sighs looking out the window. "I was honestly suspicious of the girl for the longest time, but I've felt nothing wrong with her. As long as she isn't causing trouble I am fine with allowing her a quiet life. All I can do now is guide the kid on the right path."

I stare at her in disbelief before sighing. "So there is nothing to be done," I muttered angrily. I know there was no way to fight this woman and if we involved the council, it would only cause more trouble.

Theadora then looked back at me with a smirk. "Now back to my earlier question, other than her saving you, why do you wish to stay with her? I doubt you have found an interest in humanity."

I growled at her, giving her a death glare but calmed down. "Her energy… It isn't normal. I can't explain why but it isn't. I don't find it dangerous, unlike her caretakers."

The high elf hummed, a knowing smile on her face. "Had a feeling that it was something along those lines. That kid always had a strange air to her. But why is training her in magic equivalent to your rescue?"

I huffed in annoyance. "That is an exchange for living with her," I muttered before sighing. "I wish to teach her some more ways to communicate with people. The energy she has is impeding with her speech and needs to be managed. I hope to teach her a few techniques to deal with it."

I could feel this elf giving me an even bigger smile as I looked away in defiance. "Who's soft now?"

"Shut up!" I yell in embarrassment.

She chuckled before taking out a crystal orb. "Now then, let's get you registered. Can't have a pixie running around without protection."

****

Sophie had been waiting for me to get registered with the guild and had even expressed her curiosity about the procedure. I couldn't reveal what happened as each guild has its method of evaluation. That and it would reveal my skills to her and I wasn't ready to do that.

When we were to leave one of the men from yesterday noticed me. "Hey! There's the pixie!" he yelled, drawing everyone's attention.

People instantly started to gather to try and grab me. Sophie and I became tense but thankfully we had help.

"What's going on here!" approaching us was Theadora and the older male human from before.

Everyone stepped back out of respect but a few still tried to stand their ground. "That girl has a pixie. You know what they can do."

Everyone started to murmur but the guild master only smiled. "Oh, you're talking about our new adventure."

People looked at her and then back at us in confusion.

"She made a child an adventurer."

"Doesn't she need to be fourteen?"

"She's being exploited."

Theadora only chuckled, looking at me. "Mind showing your ID, Nova?"

I smirked at her and displayed my ID screen for all to see. Everyone gasped in surprise, and slowly that surprise turned into fear.

Though I am a D rank, I am now under the protection of the guild. Meaning if I were to be caught by the people for a wish, they would be going against the law. Even if they were to wish against it, it wouldn't matter if I was forced into it.

Everyone stepped away from me though I did sketch a few faces that were filled with anger. I did my best to memorize them while I smirked victoriously.

"Nove is the newest member of the guild, I wish you all to treat her with respect. Am I clear?"

No one ensured, opting for silence, a silent anger filling the room. No one was happy with this outcome but there wasn't much they could do. Some grumbled in frustration, others glared before walking away.

The guild master then walked up to us, smirking triumphantly. "Well now that that's taken care of you both should head home, alright." she looks at Sophie who still seemed a bit bothered by the situation.

"Is… she… safe…" Her slow words were filled with worry as the girl glanced between me and the elf.

Theadora only laughs. "No one will bother you guys now but you still should be careful. Is that understood?"

The girl only nods her head. "Understood…" She says, looking at me. "Should… go…?"

I nod and we set to leave again, though not before Theadora whispers to me in Fae. "You can have fun with them. Just don't get the girl involved."

I smirk at her words and nod. Sophie looks at us confused, while the man from before looks slightly unnerved.

"Something… wrong…" The kid asks as we exit the building.

I smirk, finding her worry misplaced. "Not to worry, just personal business. Fea stuff."

Her eyes narrow in concentration, as if trying to decipher my words. That is when I realized I spoke in Fae instead of Harmon, the human language. Though I hated the language with a passion Sophie only seemed to know some words of the Fae, making it difficult to speak with her.

Swallowing my pride, I spoke in Harmon. "It's nothing," I state simply surprising Sophie.

"You… speak… same… language…" how bright her eyes were was almost blinding

I shrugged my shoulders. "Not my favorite language but I can speak and understand it just fine. "

She just nodded, before scrunching her face in thought. She then looked up at me. "Speak… fae… better…?"

It took me a moment to understand but I eventually figured it out. "Unavoidable at the moment. No one knows the language well."

She nods before saying. "I'll… keep… trying…"

****

I waited for Sophie to go to sleep that day, keeping my promise to Theadora. Once I was sure she was out cold I snuck downstairs, searching for supplies.

I freeze when I feel an overwhelming blood lust coming from behind me.

"What do you think you're doing, Fae." an eerie cold voice spoke, chilling me to the core.

"Just going out for a drink ma'am," I say, doing my best to hide my fear. "Nothing to concern yourself with."

That woman hummed in response. "I know how your people work, Pixie. I know what you're about to do."

"If you know, are you going to stop me?" I asked, watching her reaction.

She just huffed. "What you do is none of my concern. Just don't get the kid involved." With that, she handed me a small pouch of coins. "Don't let it go to waste."

I stare at the pouch turning to leave. I then freeze and look at her. "Why do you support her?" The woman stopped what she was doing, listening to my words "What do you want from her."

She stood for a moment before turning around with a terrifying smile. "It is something I need to know and you don't need to worry about. Just teach her your magic and leave my involvement alone." with that she entered her room.

I couldn't have flown away faster.

****

The tavern was easy to slip into, being crowned with workers and adventures after a long weekday. It wasn't until I went to the bar did people notice my presence.

"Well if it isn't the new pixie adventure." one man growled from behind me. "Triking us to chase her."

"Do you know how much trouble we are in because of you?"

I only smirked at the growing crowd, already seeing their desires. "Oh, come on boys. I gave you a chance to catch me long before I became an adventurer. I think that is fair."

"A pain in the ass is more like it."

I chuckle before looking right at the group. "Well then how about this. In exchange for the inconvenience I caused you, I'll grant you one wish. Is that a better deal?"

This caused a few people to perk up at my words, desire brewing in their eyes. Yet more than a few people realize the truth of my words, turning away in fear. Through five men in particular, they didn't seem to catch on.

"A wish you say, now you're talking."

"We deserve a lot for the trouble you caused."

"Who knows fae could feel regret."

I smiled devilishly at them, about to take their requests, when the tavern owner came and gave me my drink. He looked at the men with a wary glance.

"I don't think it is a good idea to accept her offer," he said firmly, seeming to know the truth about what I am capable of. A smart man.

"Oh, piss off, you're just too afraid of superstition."

The man just sighed and walked away, tending to the other patriots.

"Now then," I say, taking a swig of my drink. "What is it that you desire?"
