Amelia swung open the door, her mind a storm of thoughts. The unpleasant meeting with her father-in-law still lingered with every step she took toward the house. Grabbing the doorknob, she remembered she had another problem she should be worried about.
Nick.
What was she gonna say to her husband when they finally faced each other? Amelia's face turned beet red. She closed her eyes for a second to calm down and muster the courage to step inside.
Turns out, the living room was empty. Nick's room light was still on. "Maybe he's still working overtime. Does he have a paper deadline tonight?" Amelia guessed. She checked her watch and realized it wasn't that late yet.
But maybe it'd be better if she put off talking for another day or two. Facing Nick that night felt like too much.
She tiptoed quickly to her room, making sure Nick didn't hear her. Relief washed over her as she shut the door behind her, leaning against the wooden frame and exhaling deeply.
