He inspected a few trees without staying too far from his bed.
When he touched the ants among the grass with his bare foot, the ants were scared of his foot and went around it, while a couple of them climbed onto his finger.
Seeing alien plants and trees among the oak tree made him believe that what the voice had said might be false. This single oak tree was giving him a small hope.
