Chapter 73 - Bonds

Despite the shock and fear coursing through me at the sight of the ominous vision, I forced myself to remain composed. I couldn't afford to show any weakness, especially not in front of my friends and sister.

With a practiced ease, I pushed the vision to the back of my mind, burying it beneath layers of forced calm and reassurance. "Everything alright, Magnus?" Alina's voice broke through the haze of my thoughts, her concern evident in her tone.

I offered her a reassuring smile, masking the turmoil raging within me. "Yes, everything's fine," I replied, my voice steady despite the unease gnawing at my insides. "I'm just a bit overwhelmed by all the revelations, that's all."

Alina studied me for a moment, her gaze searching mine for any hint of deception. Satisfied, she nodded, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Alright then," she said, her tone lightening with relief. "Just remember, we're all in this together."

As I was thinking about the future, I opened the gate to the royal palace of the Gloria Empire.

As we entered the grand halls of the royal palace, memories of Elijah's past flooded my mind. The opulent surroundings spoke of a life of luxury and privilege, a stark contrast to the trials and tribulations we had faced in our quest to save Rowan.

Alina and I found ourselves alone in one of the palace's lavish chambers, the air heavy with unspoken words and unresolved tension. Despite the warmth of the flickering torches that lined the walls, an icy chill seemed to settle between us, casting a shadow over our shared solitude.

Alina paced the room restlessly, her movements showing the turmoil that simmered beneath the surface. I watched her silently, unsure of how to bridge the growing distance that had formed between us in recent days.

"Alina," I called out softly, my voice breaking the heavy silence that hung over us like a suffocating cloak. "What's troubling you? You seem... distant."

She paused mid-stride, her brow furrowed in contemplation, as she turned to face me. "It's... it's nothing," she replied, her voice strained with the effort of masking her true emotions.

I shook my head, refusing to accept her evasive answer. "No, it's not nothing," I pressed, my tone gentle but firmly. "I can tell something's been bothering you. Please, Alina, you can tell me anything."

She hesitated for a moment, her gaze flickering with uncertainty, before she finally relented, her shoulders slumping in defeat. "I... I saw something," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "In the crystal orb. A vision of the future."

My heart skipped a beat at her words, a sense of unease settling over me like a dark cloud. "What did you see?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper as I braced myself for her response.

Alina took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to reveal. "I saw... I saw you, Magnus," she began, her voice trembling with emotion. "I saw you... dead. At the hands of Anna."

"Oh," I replied softly, the weight of her words sinking in like a heavy stone in the pit of my stomach. Despite the shock of hearing Alina's vision confirmed, there was a strange sense of resignation within me, as if I had already braced myself for the inevitable.

Alina's frustration boiled over; her eyes flashed with a fiery intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. Before I could react, she pushed me down onto the bed with surprising strength, her hands gripping my shoulders firmly as she pushed me, pinning me beneath her weight.

"Damn it, Magnus!" she exclaimed, her voice laced with a strong mix of anger and fear. "How can you be so calm about this? I saw a vision of your death, and you're just... accepting it?"

I met her gaze evenly, refusing to let her anger sway my resolve. "I'm not accepting it, Alina," I replied, my voice calm despite the turbulent emotions raging within me. "I'm just... trying to process it. To figure out what we can do to change our fate."

Her grip on my shoulders tightened, her frustration palpable as she leaned in closer, her breath hot against my skin. "But what if we can't change it, Magnus?" she demanded, her voice trembling with uncertainty. "What if this is our destiny, and we're powerless to stop it?"

I reached up, gently placing my hands on her arms to calm her restless energy. "We're not powerless, Alina," I reassured her, soft but resolute. "As long as we're together, we can face whatever comes our way. We just have to have faith in ourselves and each other."

Alina's anger momentarily subsided, revealing a hint of vulnerability that softened her facial features. "I'm scared, Magnus," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Scared of losing you, of losing everything we've fought for."

I reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her face, my heart aching at the sight of her vulnerability. "I know."

I felt a surge of tenderness wash over me, overwhelming the fear and uncertainty that had gripped us both. Without a word, I brought her closer, wrapping my arms around her in a gentle embrace and offering her the comfort and reassurance she wanted.

We held each other tightly amidst our turbulent emotions, our hearts beating in sync. In that moment, I felt a calm sense of security, knowing that we could face anything as long as we were together.

Finally, Alina pulled back slightly, her eyes searching mine for an answer to the question that lingered unspoken between us. "Magnus," she began, her voice soft with uncertainty, "what if... what if we ran away together? Left all of this behind and started anew?"

I sighed. "As much as I would love nothing more than to escape with you, Alina," I replied, my voice tinged with regret, "we can't run from our responsibilities. We still have a world to save."

Her expression fell, disappointment flashing in her eyes, before she nodded in reluctant understanding. "I know," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of our beating hearts. "But sometimes I wish we could just be together, without the weight of the world on our shoulders."

I leaned in closer, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, a silent promise of my unwavering devotion. "Someday, Alina," I murmured, my lips brushing against her skin with tender affection. "Someday we'll have our chance to be together, free from the burdens that bind us. But for now, let's focus on what we can do to make that future a reality."

As I held Alina close, she spoke to me about her feelings, leaving us both unsure of what to do. When she pulled back, she looked at me with hesitation, asking a question that demanded honesty.

"Magnus," she began, her voice soft but determined, "do you trust Anna? After what we saw in the visions, can you trust her to not... hurt you?"

I paused, considering her question carefully, before offering her a reassuring smile. "Yes, Alina," I replied, my voice steady despite the lingering doubts that grasped at my conscience. "I trust Anna. She's my sister, and despite everything, she's always been there for me. I have to believe that she had a reason for what she did, even if we don't understand it yet."

Alina's expression softened, a flicker of understanding passing between us as she nodded in silent acceptance. "Family is important," she conceded, her voice filled with a hint of melancholy. "I just hope that your trust in her isn't misplaced."

I reached out, gently pressing her cheek in my hand. My touch was a silent gesture of reassurance. "I understand your concerns, Alina," I murmured, my thumb brushing against her skin with tender affection, "but we can't let fear dictate our actions."

As the moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room, I found myself lost in a haze of memories, the lines between past and present blurring into an indistinct wave of emotion and longing.

Suddenly, I was no longer in the grand halls of the royal palace but rather in a small, humble cottage nestled in the heart of the countryside. The air was alive with the sweet scent of wildflowers and the soft murmur of a gentle breeze, carrying with it the promise of a new beginning.

As I stepped into the room, my heart swelled with a sense of wonder and anticipation, for nestled in the cradle before me lay the most precious gift of all—a tiny bundle wrapped in swaddling cloth, her eyes wide with innocence and curiosity.

"Magnus," my mother whispered, her voice filled with tender affection as she beckoned me closer, "come meet your baby sister."

I approached the cradle with a mixture of excitement and nervousness, my small hand reaching out to gently caress the soft curve of her cheek. "Hello, little one," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper as I marveled at the tiny miracle before me.

And as my baby sister stirred, her eyes meeting mine for the first time, I felt a bond form between us.

In that moment, the weight of responsibility fell upon me, not as a burden but as a privilege. I was no longer just a child; I was a protector, a guardian, entrusted with the care of this precious life.

As I gazed into Anna's eyes, I saw reflected in them the same sense of wonder and curiosity that stirred within my own heart. She reached out a tiny hand, fingers curling around my own as if to reassure me that we were in this together.

"Anna," I whispered, the name rolling off my tongue, "I promise to always be there for you. To protect you, to guide you, to love you with all that I am."

My mother smiled, a tear glistening in the corner of her eye, as she watched the bond between her children grow stronger with each passing moment. "You will be the best of friends," she said, her voice filled with a quiet certainty.
