Chapter 51 - The next problem

The child, looking up with wide eyes, tugged at my sleeve. "Thank you, mister. You're like a hero!"

I ruffled his hair and smiled. "I'm just doing what I can. Be safe, little one."

As Aelarion faded into the shadows, a sense of foreboding lingered. The meeting exposed the intricacy of our different journeys and prepared us for obstacles beyond the material world.

The child, still innocent and wide-eyed, held fast to his new hero, not realizing the storms that were building in worlds outside his comprehension. He had no idea that I was feeling the burden of upcoming difficulties and the obligation to manage the delicate balance between preserving innocence and confronting the harsh realities of our existence.

With the echoes of our clash resonating in my mind, I turned my attention to the child. His faith in me served as a reminder that, despite the cosmic battles, what really mattered was how our decisions affected each individual's life.

As the child and I stood in the aftermath of elemental turbulence, I couldn't shake the feeling that Aelarion's departure marked not the end but the beginning of a greater challenge—one that would test not only our strength in battle but also the resilience of our ideals in the face of inevitable conflict.

As the remnants of the battle's strain began to take their toll, a wave of dizziness swept over me. My legs wavered beneath the weight of exhaustion, threatening to give way. In that vulnerable moment, just as the world around me blurred, Elijah and Alina moved with swift precision.

Elijah's strong arms encircled me from one side, while Alina, with determination, supported me from the other. Their synchronized effort prevented the impending collapse, grounding me in their unwavering support.

"You did well, Magnus." Elijah's voice carried a sense of reassurance.

Alina added, "We've got you. Rest now."

With their help, I let the fatigue take a momentary hold and gave in to the approaching darkness.

In a different part of the agitated landscape, Rowan found a momentary respite from the family discord that still hung in the air. While Anna followed him. They settled under the shadow of a partially destroyed structure, engaging in a heartfelt conversation about the complexities of family ties.

With a determined yet vulnerable look on his face, Rowan told Anna about his tense connection with his father. Anna listened with empathy, offering words of encouragement.

But a growling rumble that reverberated through the emptiness cut short their discourse. The ground trembled beneath the force of an approaching menace, and Rowan instinctively placed himself between Anna and the source of the disturbance.

A monstrous creature, its twisted form a product of Nyx's corrupted influence, emerged from the shadows. Its eyes glowed with an ominous light as it fixed its attention on the two friends, hungering for chaos.

Rowan swiftly notched an arrow, his bowstring taut as he confronted the monstrous intruder. Anna, lacking magical prowess, scanned the surroundings for any makeshift weapons or traps they could employ.

With the creature lunging forward, Rowan shot a flurry of arrows, his natural affinity for the bow guiding each stroke. The arrows found their mark, striking the creature and momentarily slowing its advance. Yet, it was clear that brute force alone wouldn't be enough to defeat this corrupted behemoth.

Anna, who had knowledge of novel battles, noticed a pile of debris nearby. She quickly devised a plan and signaled to Rowan. "Use your arrows to distract it!" she called out. Rowan nodded in understanding, his trust in Anna evident.

As Rowan continued to rain arrows upon the creature, Anna gathered a stack of loose stones and metal fragments. With precise timing, she threw the debris in a way that created a makeshift barricade, momentarily obstructing the creature's path.

Seizing the opportunity, Rowan adjusted his strategy. He aimed for the creature's vulnerable spots, exposed by Anna's distraction. The combined efforts of bow skills and strategic thinking began to take a toll on the monster.

Their coordination reached a crescendo when Anna, noticing a flicker of weak spots in the creature's movements, urged Rowan, "Now, Rowan! Aim for its core!"

With unwavering focus, Rowan drew his bowstring to its limit and released a radiant arrow that pierced through the corrupted heart of the creature. A blinding burst of light followed as the monster convulsed and dissipated into astral particles.

Breathing heavily, Rowan lowered his bow, and Anna rushed to his side. The friends exchanged a triumphant yet relieved glance, their teamwork proving that courage and ingenuity could overcome even the most formidable adversaries.

After defeating the monster, Rowan and Anna took a moment to catch their breath. Rowan looked at Anna with admiration, grateful for her quick thinking and resourcefulness.

"Anna, you were amazing! I couldn't have defeated that monster without your help," Rowan exclaimed.

Anna smiled, a bit shy but pleased. "Well, teamwork is key, right? You have the magic, and I've got the brainpower."

They continued their journey, and the bond between them was stronger than ever. Rowan felt lucky to have a friend like Anna by his side, someone who not only admired his magical abilities but also brought her own unique strengths to the table.

As they walked, Rowan couldn't shake the lingering tension from his conversation with his father. Anna, sensing his inner turmoil, offered a comforting squeeze on his shoulder. "We'll face whatever comes our way together, Rowan. You're not alone in this."

As Rowan and Anna arrived at the scene where I lay unconscious, the shock on their faces was palpable. Elijah and Alina approached them, concern etched on their faces.

Rowan inquired, "What happened here? Is Magnus okay?"

Elijah explained the encounter with Aelarion and the ensuing battle against the corrupted mage. Alina added, "Magnus protected an innocent child, and it took a toll on him. He's strong, but even he has his limits."

Anna's eyes flared with anger, her protective instincts taking over. "No one has the right to harm my brother except me. I won't let this slide. We need to find a way to make things right."

Rowan, though worried, nodded in agreement. "We'll stand by Magnus, just like he stood by us. Let's figure out how to help him."

Determined to help, Anna turned to Elijah and Alina. "What can we do to heal him? There must be something!"

Elijah, thoughtful, replied, "Magnus possesses remarkable resilience, but he needs rest and time for his astral energies to replenish. We should find a safe place for him to recover."

Alina added, "Meanwhile, we need to gather more information about Nyx's activities. We can't afford to lose focus on our mission."

Rowan, feeling a sense of responsibility, offered, "I'll stay with Magnus. Anna, you can help gather information. We'll cover more ground that way."

Anna, torn between her protective instincts and the need for action, finally nodded. "Fine, but keep me updated. And don't you dare leave my brother's side."

After defining their roles, the group divided into smaller groups and began working toward the shared objective of conquering the obstacles that threatened the world.

As Rowan sat by my side, watching over me as I rested, a somber atmosphere lingered in the air. Aelarion's sudden appearance cut through the quiet hum of the surroundings. There was an urgency about his presence that suggested a revelation was about to happen.

"Who are you? What brings you here?" Rowan inquired with a note of caution in his voice.

Aelarion's gaze fixed on me, and he spoke with an air of formality, "Nyx wishes to see Magnus. She has questions that demand answers."

Rowan's eyes narrowed, suspicion evident. "Why does Nyx want to see Magnus? What does she hope to achieve?"

Aelarion's response carried a mysterious undertone: "The threads of fate intertwine in mysterious ways. Nyx wants to see the real Magnus. The one who disrupted her plans."

A tense silence followed Aelarion's unclear words. Rowan, sensing the underlying threat, took a defensive stance, ready to protect both me and the kid.

"If that's the case, you can reach Magnus over my dead body," Rowan challenged, his voice firm.

Aelarion, however, seemed unaffected by the skepticism. With a subtle gesture, he summoned the elements, a manifestation of his formidable power. The confrontation escalated into a brief but intense clash. Rowan fought valiantly, but Aelarion's mastery over the elements proved overwhelming.

In a blink, Aelarion moved with the fluidity of the wind, his elemental prowess evident in the seamless execution of each calculated move. Rowan, despite his formidable skills, found himself outmaneuvered by the sheer speed and precision of his adversary.

With a subtle twist of his wrist, Aelarion harnessed the elements to create a momentary whirlwind, disorienting Rowan. In that crucial instant, Aelarion's other hand darted forward, effortlessly lifting my unconscious body onto his shoulder.

Rowan was temporarily frozen, witnessing the incredible skill of his opponent's maneuver and its suddenness and grace. Aelarion, with me in tow, faded into the obscurity of the shadows, leaving only echoes of their encounter lingering in the air.
