Chapter 39 - Why does this always happens to me?

The Kraken, infused with newfound dark energy, lunged at us with enhanced speed. Its tentacles whipped through the air, aiming to strike us down. Alina gracefully dodged the first onslaught, her dual blades slicing through the air with deadly precision.

I conjured a protective astral shield, blocking a tentacle's strike. Lumina, who appeared out of nowhere in her dragon form, roared defiantly and unleashed a torrent of magical flames, attempting to sear the kraken's stony exterior.

Seizing the moment, I launched a barrage of astral projectiles at the kraken's eyes, hoping to blind it temporarily. Alina took advantage of the distraction, darting in with her blades to strike at its vulnerable spots. However, the kraken retaliated with a shockwave that sent Alina tumbling backward.

I rushed to her side, creating a healing barrier to mend her wounds. The kraken, sensing an opportunity, charged up a dark energy beam. Lumina, ever vigilant, shielded us with her wings, taking the brunt of the attack.

Alina, fueled by determination, leaped back into the battle. She executed a series of acrobatic maneuvers, slicing at the kraken's limbs. I channeled my astral magic into a concentrated beam, aiming for the heart of the creature's dark energy.

The battle raged on, each move a calculated dance of offense and defense. The kraken, however, seemed relentless, drawing power from the depths of the ruins.

In a pivotal moment, Alina and I synchronized our attacks once again. Combining her dual blades with my astral magic, we unleashed a cascade of energy that enveloped the kraken. The cavern echoed with the sound of our combined assault.

As the dust settled, the kraken's resilient form stood tall, an unsettling determination in its glowing eyes. Exhaustion weighed heavily on my shoulders as I turned to Alina, expressing my frustration: "No matter how many times we attack it, it always stands back. I have a plan."

Alina nodded in understanding, her gaze fixed on the relentless adversary before us. Lumina, though weary, remained ready for the next move.

Feeling a surge of determination, I focused my energy on a daring plan. Channeling the remnants of my astral power, I conjured a swirling vortex of spatial energy around the kraken. The creature thrashed against the spatial forces, resisting the confinement.

With gritted teeth, I strained to maintain the spatial realm's integrity. Alina and Lumina seized the opportunity to retreat to a safer distance, watching as the Kraken fought against the spatial constraints.

The kraken, filled with dark energy, tried to break free, and the struggle grew more fierce. I could feel the strain on my powers as I gradually reduced the size of the spatial realm, compressing it around the monstrous foe.

Sweat dripped down my forehead as I wrestled with the spatial forces. Lumina roared in support, sensing the impending victory within our grasp. Alina, her eyes reflecting a mix of concern and anticipation, urged me on, "Magnus, you've got this! Hold on!"

The kraken's roars echoed through the shrinking space, its resistance escalating. I poured every ounce of my remaining astral strength into maintaining the confinement, determined to subdue the relentless adversary once and for all.

The spatial realm reached its smallest size, with the Kraken trapped within its confines. The cavern, now eerily silent, awaited the outcome of this intense battle of wills.

The Kraken was dead. When I reopened the spatial realm, I saw the remnants of the Kraken and a glowing piece of the Eldorian shard. I looked at Alina proudly as I held the shard. She smiled back at me and gave a thumbs up.

I turned my eyes away from her gaze and saw everyone coming towards us. Rowan was carrying my body on his back, and Anna and Alex were sprinting behind him.

As Rowan gently placed my body down, I felt the pull of my physical form. With Alina's support, I transitioned back into my body. When I opened my eyes, worried but relieved faces met me as Lumina landed on my shoulder.

Anna exclaimed, "Magnus, you did it! You defeated the kraken!"

Rowan added, "You were like a boss in there, man."

I chuckled weakly, still catching my breath. "Team effort, everyone. We did it."

I stood up, holding the shard in my hand. I could see that Alex was enthralled with this sight.

Alina, standing beside me, said, "Indeed, quite impressive. Now, finally, we can head back home."

As we reveled in the aftermath of our victory, the ruins around us began to tremble. The once-sturdy structures now showed signs of instability, and the ground beneath our feet quivered with each passing moment.

Anna shouted, "Guys, we need to get out of here! The whole place is falling apart!"

Rowan hastily picked up my body, and with Alina and Lumina at my side, we sprinted through the deteriorating ruins. The air was thick with dust, and the path we had taken earlier was now filled with obstacles as the cavern collapsed around us.

Alex urged us, "Move quickly! We need to find a way back to the island."

As we ran, debris fell from above, and the once-majestic carvings have now turned into hazards. We maneuvered through the crumbling passages, the urgency of our escape intensifying with each passing second.

Finally, we reached the spot where the dark cavern where we had first appeared. The opening, however, seemed different now. Lumina guided us as we leaped through the portal, leaving behind the disintegrating ruins of Lemuria.

The transition through the portal was swift, and as we emerged on the other side, we found ourselves back on the island above Lemuria. The dark cavern disappeared behind us, leaving only echoes of the collapsing ruins.

Breathing heavily, we took a moment to catch our breaths. As we caught our breaths on the island above Lemuria, the tension of the recent battle began to dissipate. Lumina, perched on my shoulder, seemed to radiate a comforting energy. Rowan, still carrying my body, gave a sigh of relief. Alex, though visibly fatigued, wore a satisfied smile. Anna, however, was in a state of awe and excitement.

Anna couldn't contain her enthusiasm as she looked at Alina. "Oh, my stars! You're Alina Mapisto, the infamous villainess from the novel series! I can't believe I'm standing next to you!"

Alina, with a raised eyebrow and a smirk, responded, "Guilty as charged. But, you know, in person, I'm not as villainous as the novels portray me."

Anna's eyes widened, and she gushed, "You're even more captivating in real life! The way you handle those dual blades and your strategic mind, it's legendary! Can I, like, be your apprentice or something?"

Alina chuckled, finding Anna's admiration amusing. "Apprentice, huh? Well, I suppose having a fangirl could be entertaining. But, I warn you, it's not all glamorous. Violence comes with its own set of challenges."

Anna waved her hand dismissively. "Challenge accepted! Besides, learning from the infamous Alina Mapisto? That's a dream come true!"

I rolled my eyes playfully and said, "Anna, we're not here to enroll in a villainy training program. We have serious matters to attend to."

Alina interjected, "He's right. We've just finished our quest to find the Eldorian shard. Not exactly your typical novel adventure."

Anna's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Oh, I'm so in for this quest! Imagine the plot twists we could uncover!"

Rowan, who had been listening quietly, finally spoke, "Just don't forget, we're dealing with ancient magic, forgotten civilizations, and potential world-altering artifacts. It's not all fun and games."

Anna nodded, her excitement undeterred. "I get it, Rowan. But imagine the drama! The unexpected alliances, the betrayals, the revelations! Lemuria is like the ultimate stage for a novel plot."

I was listening to the banter and chimed in, "Well, let's not jinx it. I don't want any betrayals for once."

I glanced at Alina and continued, "We need to learn more about Lemuria and how it connects to my dad's disappearance. Alina, do you have any insights?"

Alina looked at me curiously. "Your dad, huh? Don't worry, we will find him." She gave a huge smile. I smiled back.

Just when I thought everything was going fine, I could feel someone gazing at me with murderous intent. I was too tired, so I ignored it.

As we discussed our next steps, I felt a sudden, sharp pain in my stomach. The world around me blurred, and I staggered backward. Confusion and disbelief filled my eyes as I looked down to see Alex withdrawing a dagger from my abdomen. He stole the shard from me.

Anna screamed, Rowan shouted in disbelief, and Lumina let out a small gasp. Alina's eyes widened with shock. The betrayal was swift and unexpected.

Alex's face twisted into a sinister grin. "You fools. Did you really think I was on your side?" he sneered.

I stammered as I gripped my wound. "You, Bastard, don't tell me it was you who betrayed my dad." He whispered, "Your dad was as naive as you."

Anger was boiling inside me as the pain intensified and my vision darkened. As I fell to the ground, my consciousness slipping away, I realized that not everything was as it seemed. Alex had betrayed me. The last thing I heard was the echo of Alina's enraged voice before everything went silent, and I succumbed to unconsciousness.
