Chapter 144 - Starting the Evacuation

While it probably hadn't taken that long, Jonas couldn't help but feel moving through these corridors was taking longer than it really should. Not only that, but he was starting to smell smoke. It could be a good thing or a bad thing. Until he could see the source he wouldn't be able to say for sure.

Of course it could be neither good nor bad, just that he was smelling something smoking. He'd never been able to differentiate the different smells from different smokes, like he'd known a few people who could. Though, one thing he was sure of was that whoever was behind the assassination plan had started torching the building.

As he felt like he was getting closer, he heard sounds. At first it was too distant to make anything out, other than general noises, but as he got closer, he could tell a fight was going on. He could only hope that it was between someone trying to escape the party rather than a rescuer trying to break through the would-be assassins.

Following the sound of combat, Jonas quickly found himself watching Kim fight three men. While he wanted to jump in to help, it was clear Kim had them outmatched, as she was wielding a sword while the other three had daggers at best. Aside from the fact that he was still at least fifty feet away and the fact he knew that Kim wouldn't be happy with him if he decided to help her out when she had the situation under control.

As Jonas watched the fight while he approached, he couldn't help but think that all the strength in the world wouldn't help you if you couldn't reach your opponent to attack but they could reach you. The three men were on the defensive and doing their best to block Kim's sword swings, but their mobility was hindered by the hallway.

Jonas watched as Kim shifted her tactic from attacking the men themselves and instead started working on attacking their arms. While it would take a little longer to eliminate the threat that they posed, limiting their ability to block Kim's sword would help even more.

By the time he reached Kim, she'd dispatched the three men, their bodies laying on the floor. Jonas couldn't help but think that they'd need to move them or when the people who attended the party might trip over them as they came out this way. He couldn't help but assume that this was the only way out from the party, since Kim was there.

As he approached, Kim turned to face him, her sword at the ready. At first Jonas was confused then realized she probably was reacting to the sound and that she couldn't see because it was so dark in the corridor while he could see clearly because of his abilities.

"Kim, it's me," he said calmly.

"About time you showed up," Kim snapped, earning a smile from Jonas, though he knew she couldn't see it.

"I got here as quickly as I could," Jonas replied. "Though, we should start evacuating people. I can't say how many there are, but I get the feeling their ready to burn this building down."

"What're you suggesting?" Kim asked, sounding skeptical.

"I'll go through this building and find a path for you to take while you start escorting people out," Jonas said.

Kim instead shook her head. "Do you even know the quickest route to the main entrance?" Kim asked.

"No, I can only guess where it would be," Jonas admitted, after a minute of silence. Mostly because he could tell what point Kim was going to make and he didn't like what he knew was coming.

"Then in that case, you head back there and help anyone who needs it while I clear the path out of here for everyone," Kim said, jerking her head behind her.

Jonas sighed. He couldn't see how he had any option this time. The only positive he could think of at the moment was that he'd been able to make it in time. Which meant that he could still do something, even if it was just a simple escort job.

"Alright," he agreed, pausing only long enough to collect the daggers the men who had been fighting Kim had while also pushing their bodies to one side of the hallway.

"I get the feeling that they were only ready to fight from a distance and didn't expect any armed resistance," Kim commented as Jonas passed her by.

"Then that means we got lucky," Jonas replied.

"Yeah, but who knows how long that'll last," Kim said, as she started making her way down the corridor Jonas had just come from.

Jonas kept focused on the path ahead of him, not letting anything that tried catching his eye distract him. Such as an expensive-looking vase that held a bouquet of flowers or a decorative sword hung on the wall. Mostly he was able to ignore those simply because we weren't what was important at that moment.

While he knew Kim was okay, he couldn't be sure the rest of his group was as well. Too much could have happened that he wouldn't know about, but he was confident that they hadn't died. At least not yet. He would expect that the guests would be more likely to get killed than anyone in his group.

However, what was likely wasn't always what happened. Especially if they were attacked by someone who was actually intelligent. As that type of person would go for the biggest threats first rather than the guests who would probably be more of an annoyance than a threat.

Soon, Jonas could see light ahead of him, letting him know that he was nearing the room where the party had been held. Though, what was left of the doors to the room were just hanging on their hinges, with the rest of them in splinters and different sized chunks along the floor. He couldn't help but hope that if it wasn't magical that he wouldn't find out who or what smashed those doors apart like that.

As he entered the room, he was surprised to see Elin holding the arrow sticking out of the chest of a young girl and talking softly to her, whose face was pale and sweating. Not that Jonas could blame her under those circumstances.

He didn't say anything to Elin, but rather looked around to see if there were anyone who looked like they could start helping move the guests out of the building. Bodily if they had to.

Seeing Guy battling some flames on the other side of the room, Jonas nodded to himself. He had a feeling that trying to put out the fires by beating them with… well anything really, wasn't going to put them out. The best way to do that would be to smother then, such as putting dirt on them, but he could tell by a brief glance around the room that there wasn't going to be anything useful like that in the first place.

Jonas quickly made his way to Guy and pulled him away from the fire while he was in mid-swing of having used his coat to attack the flames. As Guy was pulled away, he swung at Jonas, but he could tell it was more of a reflexive action than a hostile one.

"We need to get people out of here," Jonas told him flatly. "These flames aren't going to be so easy to burn out. We need to get the guests to safety first."

"What? Where can we escape? All the exits are blocked," Guy protested.

"Someone got that door open," Jonas replied, pointing towards the door he'd entered the room through. "I can't say how long we have, but we need to start getting people moving,"

Guy looked at Jonas for a minute, the wheels turning in his brain slowly. Jonas couldn't help but wonder how much in shock Guy still was over what was happening. How his entire world was being turned upside down in a way that he couldn't have prepared for.

Finally Guy nodded. "Alright. I'll start getting people out," he said. "Just make sure you don't end up needing to be saved yourself."

"I'll keep that in mind," Jonas answered with a grin.

As Guy started recruiting people to help in his efforts, Jonas looked around and noticed someone slumped on the ground in a dark corner. He walked over and saw Tristan unconscious, a little bit of blood coming down from his head. Jonas couldn't tell if he'd fallen there and hit his head or if something had hit him and he'd fallen there.

The third option was that someone had hit him and put him there. Which was an option Jonas hoped wasn't true. Yet, at the moment, it was just as possible in his mind as any of the others, since he didn't have any evidence one way or the other about it.

However, as long as he could get Tristan out alive, then he'd be able to see what Tristan had to say about it when he came to. It was possible that this might be the most promising lead as to stopping the assassination attempt. Though, it could also be just another dead end that would waste their time.

Still, Jonas lifted up Tristan over his shoulder and started carefully carrying him back towards where everyone else was. Regardless of if it helped them figure things out, Tristan still deserved a chance to continue living. He was still young and shouldn't have his life end this soon. Especially like this.
