Chapter 122 - How Did You Know?

Jonas knocked on the doorframe as his contact was talking with the guy that Elmo identified as the person who had spoken to him. And threatened him. Which Jonas was willing to let go if this could get resolved peacefully with assurances that it wouldn't happen again. At all.

"Hold on," the contact said to the other man before turning to Jonas. "What do you need now?"

"I just thought I'd let you know, you don't need to look for the person I asked you about a minute ago," Jonas said pleasantly.

"Oh? Here I thought it was important to you. Why the change of heart?"

"Because the man you're talking to in here is who I had been asking you to look for," Jonas answered just as friendly, despite the undertones of hostility behind the subject he'd used when he'd discussed the subject previously.

Jonas' contact blinked. It was clear he hadn't expected this turn of events. Although, Jonas thought he should have at least been prepared for this possibility, as this man certainly wouldn't have acted without orders, and he had entered this office just as Jonas and his group were leaving it.

It shouldn't take much brain power to recognize the possibility that there could be some recognition there. Although, Jonas had to admit, his contact did seem a little out of sorts from how he usually was. Which meant he was likely distracted by one thing or another. Which was partly why he was willing to let this go if the reason behind what was done would be freely shared and assurances were made that it wouldn't happen again.

After all, Jonas hadn't come here for a fight. He just wanted this matter resolved so they could not have this happen in the future. This was purely a move to reduce future headaches than anything else at the moment.

After a minute of a surprised expression, Jonas' contact shifted to looking puzzled. "I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean," he said, clearly trying to sound like he really didn't know what was going on, but Jonas was able to detect a slight twitch of his face before it moved to looking surprised to looking puzzled.

Jonas was sure his contact was playing dumb. However, he had to admit, this guy was a good actor. If he didn't have the Keen Eyes skill, he was sure he'd have missed the twitch.

"Look, we're not here to pick a fight. We just want to know what it was about. What is it that I'm supposed to know that has you so concerned?" Jonas pressed, making it clear that he wasn't leaving.

The man's eyes narrowed, but still continued looking puzzled. He turned to the other man and said, "Go outside and wait. We can talk after this."

The other man nodded and quickly left the room, squeezing by Kim on his way out. Kim didn't seem bothered by him, although Jonas suspected that it was Elin he had to squeeze by, then that would be a different story.

Once the other man was gone, Jonas' contact motioned for them to close the door and Jonas nodded to Elmo, who immediately went to lose the door. Whatever his contact had to say, it was clear he'd rather not be widely known.

After a minute of silence, his contact sighed. "How did you learn about someone planning on killing the king?" was all he asked.

"It's not that I don't want to tell you," Jonas replied. "It's more that I really can't say what my source is exactly. I just merely learned about it from my source, in the exact same way I learned about the goblins. I'm afraid I can't say more about it because my information on my source is rather limited and I really don't expect others to believe what little details I really could share."

Jonas wasn't bothered when his contact stayed silent. If his contact had an immediate response, then he would have been more worried. This indicated that he was actually thinking about Jonas' response. If there wasn't anything to think about, then either they'd have to fight their way out or watch out for knifes coming for their backs.

Jonas stayed quiet himself, not wanting to deal with the wait, but resigning himself to it, given the fact he really had no option and it wasn't wise to rush someone in that kind of a position. If he tried, then they'd probably have to fight their way out.

Finally, the man took a breath. "I'm not sure I understand, but I can't argue with how you knew the goblins were coming when there shouldn't have been a reason for you to know anyway," the man said calmly. "So, what I can tell you is that when I made inquires as to about plans to assassinate the king, I got pulled in for a discussion from my boss. He wasn't happy that I was asking about that. So, I told him everything. About how you'd asked me for information on that in exchange for some work. While he wasn't happy about that, he then told me to find out how you knew about it in the first place. I was to use whatever methods to get you to talk."

Jonas waited a minute when his contact had stopped talking before giving his response. "Alright, so what do you plan to do now? Will your boss be fine with you just letting me go like this?"

"It's not that simple. My boss won't mind it if I don't do anything to you. He was wanting to know just how you learned about it. I guess that information is rather sensitive."

"Would your boss be happy if we paid him a visit like this?" Kim asked, much to Jonas' annoyance.

The man looked at Kim in surprise, clearly not having expected Kim to say anything. "Of course he wouldn't," came the reply. "That would mean that more information about him is out there than he'd like. Which would mean that you'd probably be in actual danger then. He can be… uh, I guess the term for it would be over enthusiastic when it comes to things like this. So, I wouldn't recommend trying to speak with him directly. You'll just either end up killing him or having him kill you and your friends here."

"So, what's your part in all of this?" Jonas asked, wanting to make sure that his contact wasn't planning on making a move against him quickly or not.

"I'm merely just a manager for this warehouse. They let me know what do to in here and it'll only small things. Occasionally something a little bigger, but we're not really set up to deal with anything that much bigger than what we usually deal with."

Jonas felt like he should have taken a nap earlier with how tired he was feeling just from listening to his contact's spiel, but at this point, there wasn't any use in worrying about it. It wouldn't help him at this moment anyway. Right now he had to figure out not only what he should do with this knowledge, but also if he should make sure his contact couldn't do anything to him. Permanently.

It was a bit of a conundrum, but he wasn't too worried about it. Soon enough they'd be leaving to stop this assassination attempt, so as long as his contact didn't do anything to him or the others in his group, he was willing to let everything be as water under the bridge. Especially since then he wouldn't have to deal with how much of a defense his contact might have. Everything would just be much simpler to not have to deal with that situation as well.

At least if he could avoid it at all possible. Yet, as he glanced at the others in his group, he couldn't help but wonder if maybe dealing with these people would give them some experience in fighting other people. After all, from what he was able to learn, it was likely that he'd merely stumbled on people who worked for whoever was planning on killing the king. Assuming it wasn't bigger than just that.

"Well, what I want to know is what you plan on doing about me knowing," Jonas merely replied. "I mean, if you plan on continuing to harass those I'm with, then it'd be better for me to deal with this now. However, if you're willing to let us just sever out ties here and not bother each other again, if we can help it, then I'm willing to let this go and you can let your boss know everything you know about us."

Jonas could see the wheels turning in his contact's eyes. To Jonas this was a straightforward proposition, but at the same time, other people could do some pretty stupid things at times, no matter how smart they actually were. He knew he'd done plenty of that himself in his life.

His contact eventually nodded. "Alright. I'll give my people notice to leave you and those around you alone. However, if you stay in where you are for too long, my boss won't share the same sentiment. So, if you don't move on soon, then you're going to have to worry about what he's going to do."

Jonas nodded. "Of course. We were planning on moving around anyway, even before this," Jonas said. "Take care."
