Chapter 88 - Separated

When Jonas suggested they stop to rest, Kim wasn't going to argue. She wouldn't mind some sleep, but at the same time, wasn't sure if she'd be able to get any with knowing how good of a chance it was for the goblins to come through here. Especially with how she seriously doubted that all the goblins had left the dungeon. Not with the portal still open and able to let more into here.

However, it was completely dark, so it wasn't like they'd be able to adequately make their way through the corridors without potentially hurting themselves from bumping into the walls, if not walking into them when a turn came up. Although, she couldn't say how well Jonas could see, since it seemed like he was able to see just as well, not that she really knew how.

Kim shook those thoughts out of her head. Thinking about that wasn't going to help their current situation and didn't do anything productive. All it did was waste time. Especially since it wasn't like she really cared about that. If Jonas could see perfectly in this darkness, then that was his business as well as if he shared it with them.

Right now she just wanted Elin in her arms. Someone soft and huggable. As well as maybe someone to sneak a touch or two in this concealing darkenss.

"Elin?" Kim called softly.

Kim waited a few minutes for a response that didn't come. The longer she waited, the more uneasy she became. She didn't think that they'd passed anywhere a goblin could have been waiting in ambush, but at the same time, she couldn't say they hadn't. Especially since it was already getting dark when they'd even passed through the room they'd fought the troll in.

The only sounds that she could make out was the regular breathing from Jonas and Elmo in addition to her own heartbeat. She wasn't surprised that Elmo sounded like he'd already fallen asleep, his breathing even and deep, given she was sure he didn't have much stamina, being a mage. Though she wasn't sure if Jonas planned on keeping watch, since that hadn't been discussed earlier.

"Jonas?" Kim asked, feeling helpless with not being able to see.

"Yeah?" Jonas asked, sounding like he'd been starting to fall asleep.

"Do you know where Elin is?" Kim asked, suddenly hoping that Elin had just fallen asleep and so couldn't have even heard Kim call for her.

Jonas sighed and Kim could hear the rustling of his clothing as he moved. A moment after he said, "No, doesn't look like she's with us right now."

Kim wasn't sure how to take this. She worried that Elin had been captured by the goblins and treated the same way that Heather and Sonya had been. Though, not only that, but she couldn't be sure that if Elin got the same status effect that those two had, that she'd be able to be healed of it. Especially since they didn't know exactly how they'd been inflicted with it.

Kim debated trying to head back to try and get Elin, ,but couldn't say if that would be a good idea or if it would be something that might put herself at risk, seeing as how she could potentially end up outnumbered or even caught off guard in the darkness. Which could possibly end up with her captured by the goblins, leaving her as a plaything for them.

Kim shook that thought from her head. No matter what, she'd kill herself before she let that happen. Yet at the same time, if Elin had ended up like that, she wasn't sure if she'd be able to justify ending her own life since that would mean leaving Elin in that position without anyone she could count on to save the girl.

Kim felt herself starting to get a headache over this. She knew she should go make sure that Elin was okay, but at the same time, couldn't be sure that she wouldn't be creating more problems by going to search for her in the darkness. Especially since it wasn't like she had any source of light to bring with her. She was merely at the mercy of the light the dungeon would provide for them when it became daytime.

Kim heard Jonas groan softly and stand up. "If you're that worried, I'll go look her her myself," Jonas said grumpily. "I'll be back in a few minutes once I find her. Just stay awake and keep an eye out for any torches or anything like that. If you do see any torchlight coming, keep in mind what likely would have torches."

Kim wanted to thank him, but felt the words close up in her throat the moment she wanted to say them. For one thing, it almost felt like if she did, she'd be jeopardizing Elin's life somehow. Then there was how she couldn't quite place whether Jonas was being condescending towards her or if he was doing it because he either was worried about Elin or because he could tell that Kim was.

However, she knew that the window for that was gone by the time she heard Jonas' echoing footsteps fade in the distance.

Jonas rubbed his eyes. He'd been about to fall asleep, which he had to assume was a good thing, though as he thought about it, he realized that doing that here would probably be a bad idea. Especially since he hadn't spoken to Kim about who should take which watch.

After all, they didn't seem to get much sleep the previous night because of the goblin attack. As such, he knew that Elin and Elmo wouldn't be a good candidate to take a watch. Yet, maybe it was him being so tired that kept him from thinking about that. All he knew was that his find was feeling a little foggy at the moment.

As it is, he would have been fne where he was, but he was worried that Kim would leave to go look for Elin and then other goblins would come on where he and Elmo would be.

Whether or not Kim and Elin would be captured by goblins was irrelevant. Jonas was sure that they wouldn't spare him or Elmo and if that happened, it was possible that Kim would be eitehr captured or killed as well. In short, the entire group he was with could be eliminated.

The best option he could think of was that he needed to go look for Elin and help get her to Kim. Besides, he could see very well with his Shadow Sight, so he was't going to be hampered by the darkness. Then there was the fact that he knew he wasn't likely to get any sleep with Kim worrying like she had been doing.

Although, maybe being tired was affecting his thoughts. He could at least be certain that his thought processes were slowing down. He wasn't sure how well he'd be able to search for Elin, but didn't expect to have to go too far. With how he remembered Elin being with them when they entered the dungeon at least and how they hadn't travelled that far into the dungeon before they had stopped.

The question was, though, did Elin just get separated from them or did something happen to her? Jonas wasn't sure which was more likely, but knew that even if they hadn't passed any hidden groups of goblins, there was still the chance one of the goblins that had already left the dungeon could return, maybe with a message to other goblins to something, and happen on Elin. Which would likely end up with Elin being captured by the goblins and Jonas was sure Kim wouldn't be happy with that.

Especially with how Kim was at the moment. Then there was the fact that the passage they'd stopped on was the only one they knew to get to the room with the portal, and so, if the goblins that had captured Elin passed through there, then while they'd be able to save Elin then, there wasn't any reason that the goblin wouldn't have done anything.

Though, thinking about that wouldn't help anyone, so Jonas pushed that out of his mind as he tried to focus his thoughts and hope that he wasn't going to make things worse by doing this while his mind was trying to shut down.

He moved on, but was pretty sure that he was moving slower than they had first travelled through this corridor, during this trip, and he wondered if he did find Elin alive and well, if he'd be able to either escort her back here or if he'd need to sleep before he could start back.

Regardless, he was starting to feel like he should sleep right there, and let what would happen, happen. After all, if he was too tired to stay awake, then he could be too tired to fight, and even so, he'd have to remain awake if he was to bring Elin back.

He was starting to find his vision was becoming blurry as he noticed the stairs ahead. It took him a moment to realized there was someone sitting on the steps.

Given what little he knew about goblins, he still suspected that goblins wouldn't just rest on the steps like that. Which meant that he'd found Elin. Though, that was the last thought he had before the floor fell out beneath him and he fell to the floor, completely unconscious before he'd even finished falling to the floor.
