Chapter 3 - Wish Granted

"Katherine, did you try to commit suicide because you did not want to marry Eric?"

Katherine woke up to that voice. She sat up before turning her gaze to her father, who had just asked her the same question he had asked her a day before she died.

She slowly blinked her eyes in awe, trying to comprehend what was happening to her. Was she dreaming or was she in the afterlife because she vividly remembered being stabbed by Asher and succumbing to death.

"Can't you talk?" Her father questioned again, making her snap out of her thoughts.

"Me? Suicide? Why would i?" Feigning ignorance, she inquired with her eyes widened.

Even though she wasn't aware of how this happened, she was sure heaven granted her wish– she was given the second chance she desperately requested.

Mr. Maxwell, who was angered by Katherine's behavior, stood up angrily before he asked, "Katherine, are you trying to provoke me? Or is your brain malfunctioning?"

She remained silent to hear what he would say next. If she was truly living her second life, repeating a day before the day she died, then, her father's words would definitely rhyme with what he said last time.

"Since you want to remain silent, and prefer death over marrying Jaylen family's youngest son, fine," he paused and studied Katherine's facial expression before he continued. "I will never lose any family because of my greed. Instead, you will lose what is important to you because of your greed."

Her lips parted in amusement as she listened to her father, who repeated the exact words he said to her that day, though there was a slight change caused by her silence.

'If I am truly given a second chance, in this life, I will never live the way I lived. I will make sure not to make the same mistake I made,' she reassured herself before she glanced at her father once more.

Mr. Maxwell, who was about to walk out, paused upon his daughter's words.

"Dad, fine, I will get married to Jaylen Eric."

Maybe he misheard her. He turned to face her, "What did you just say? You won't marry your lover, who makes you happy?"

She chuckled at her father's questions before she replied, "Lover? Happy? Those words are the two words I despised the most. I also want to get married to Eric tomorrow."

Seeing the desperation, and sincerity in her, Mr. Maxwell became convinced that she wasn't playing a prank on him.

"Okay. I will discuss that with Mr. Davis. Also, make sure you take your drugs, and don't you dare have a change of mind overnight," he teased before he headed out of her ward.

She exhaled deeply with a smile formed on the corner of her lip at how she replied to her father.

'Asher, you are next. In this life, I won't allow you have the chance to kill me again,' she said inwardly with a sly smile.

"Kathe, what are you thinking? Don't tell me it is about our wedding?"

Lost in her thoughts, Asher's voice brought her back to reality. She raised her gaze to stare at him with a smirk on the corner of her lips, "Kathe, what are you thinking? Don't tell me it is about our wedding– was that the question you just asked me?"

To be sure if he was really going to kill her tomorrow in their wedding hall, she questioned calmly, trying her best to play along.

"Oh, wedding? I can't believe tomorrow is the d-day," she replied pretentiously. 'The day you will kill me,' she thought inwardly, holding back her tears at the fact that this was the man who killed her.

"I thought you were lost in your thoughts, haha. I didn't know you heard me," Asher chuckled before he said calmly.

"Anyway, is your father still adamant about our marriage? Should we try persuading him, maybe he might give us his blessing, and financial help?"

As expected, he uttered the words she expected. She smiled faintly before she took his hands into hers, reminding her of how she foolishly acted towards her killer.

This time, she was going to use that foolishness to act wisely.

"I am sorry. I don't think our wedding will be held tomorrow. My father is adamant and already severed ties with me," she paused, pretending to be sad. "Recently, I was scammed, and had no money. I am so sorry that this is happening."

Asher took his hands away from hers before he ruffled his hair. He stared at her in disappointment before he began. "Katherine, why are you telling me this now? Why? I can't believe you aren't as brilliant as I thought."

'I shouldn't have been brilliant. I should have informed you earlier before I died. I should have known that you were after my wealth and not my love,' more tears clustered in her eyes as she thought about her past mistake.

Katherine sighed deeply before she expressed how sad she felt. "I am so sorry. I don't know what to do, and I can't think straight," she allowed the tears clustered in her eyes to stream down at her words.

Asher stared at her with sympathy in his hazel eyes before he sat beside her. "Don't feel bad. We are going to get married tomorrow."

"Since you are a well-known lady in the business world, taking a loan of fifty thousand dollars shouldn't be a problem, right? You can pay it off with two months' salaries of yours," he suggested with a bright smile which he always used to deceive her.

If she didn't know his true intention, she would have fallen for his lies as she always did.

Katherine bit her lips before she replied. "Hmmm… I already took out a loan when I was scammed. Why not take out the loan, while I pay it off when I get a good job because it is obvious my father will disown me, and make me give up everything I acquired from Dayton family."

"Who will give me a loan? I am a nobody from no background, and you know that, or you don't want us to get married?" He asked with anger, sadness and disappointment laced in his voice.

Almost swayed by his cajoling voice, an idea came into her mind.

She wrapped her hands around his neck. "Do anything to get the loan from your end. I badly want this wedding to happen. If you take the loan, I will double the payment."

Asher's eyes widened at her words, finding it difficult to believe, but he knew she would never lie to him. "Really?" his brow raised, his lips parted.

'Marry me? Take out the loan and marry poverty. I will never make the same mistake I made twice!' she vowed silently, ready to rewrite her story.
