Unshed tears clouded my vision, but I could still see my brother over my shoulder. Disheveled and panting. His blonde hair thrown about—his jacket missing and the buttons of his tunic undone. His chest rose and fell with erratic breaths like he'd raced over here for me after first going through war.
Ellis' eyes slid over to Hael beside me, and they stiffened while holding each other's gazes.
My brother seemed wary of Hael—Nathan to him. He kept his eyes trained on Hael as he opened his hand to me from the distance. "Let's go, Reyin. The hall was attacked. We're leaving."
I felt Hael move. A nearly imperceptible lunge forward that I would not have caught had I not stood so close to him. I knew that dangerous look in his eyes. The threatening and possessive gleam conveying he would not let anyone, especially my brother, get in the way of me leaving with him.
