Chapter 2 - Addition to the age, subtracting from the lifespan

Twenty years later~~~

" You would be twenty years old this year. How do you plan to celebrate it?"  A middle-aged handsome man spoke lovingly as he stared at his daughter across the table.

The female in question, Carrissa smiled. She was glad that her father remembered it this year but at the same time, she felt like she was growing too fast. It seemed like yesterday when she celebrated her eighteenth birthday and now...

Another reason why she doesn't want to grow is the fact that growing up meant she would get married and marriage also meant she would move away from her father and the house.

The mansion in which they stayed meant so much to her that she wouldn't be willing to exchange anything for it. She shared valuable memories with her father and late mother here and nothing could equal its worth in her eyes.

"A simple dinner between you and me would make me happy,"  Carrissa responded with a shrug. She hated those who showed off their wealth and also hated extravagant things.

In her view, things are not to be forced since the simplest of things could prove your feelings.

Albert shook his head and closed the book in front of him. " Your eighteenth birthday was simple, too simple for a woman of your status and I cannot do the same on your twentieth birthday. I must show the world that I have birthed a beautiful and smart girl."

Albert ended his sentence with a proud look on his face. Well, he had the right to be proud since his daughter was indeed beautiful. When she was eighteen, the Grand Duke gave her the title of the most beautiful woman.

Carrissa looked on helplessly as her father kept on rejecting her idea of a simple birthday party and in the end, she gave up.

She was always helpless when her father decided to do something. He was as stubborn as her.

Her blue eyes twinkled as she left her father's study room.

She started at the vast expanse of land which were owned by her father. She didn't fear leaving this wealth one day. What she feared was her father dying and leaving her alone in this world.

She was introduced to the concept of death when her mother died when she was at the tender age of five, and ever since then she put on her good behaviour to not speed up her father's death but she was not able to stop one thing and that was to stop her self from growing.

She knew that the addition of a number to her age meant she was getting closer to her grave and painfully that also applied to her father.

She sighed and turned her gaze towards the maids who were busily working under the guidance of the strict butler.

She had known him since her infant days and now his head was full of grey hair.

Why couldn't we be created as immortals? Why must we die? Or even see our loved ones die?

These questions ran through her mind endlessly as she sought out an answer but got none.

She walked towards her room in short, elegant strides. She stood in front of a large portrait which was hung opposite her bed.

It was a portrait of a beautiful woman who bore a striking resemblance to Carrissa but looked way more mature.

"Mother, I hope you are happy wherever you are."

Carrissa muttered. She picked up her quill and began writing.
