Chapter 49 - Information Gathering

We arrived to the first town that has been attacked by the undead. The first thing I noticed was that there wasn't many people outside besides the guards that have been commissioned by the army and the paladins and priests from the churches that have volunteered to help the devastated towns. There were five towns in total and we need information on where they came from to locate the necromancer.

Town 1, Dein.....

The town was fairly small and even smaller after the first wave of undead attacked. Me and Alexandra agreed to split up to gather information since it would be easier. She went to the paladins to see what they know and I went to the guards that were stationed here. In total there were an old 10 paladins and roughly 30 guards. This was a very small number but since undead are appearing all over the place they have to split up their forces to protect enough people.

I went up to a lone guard on watchout duty and asked, "May I ask you some questions?" in the most polite voice I can manage.

The guard looked towards me and said, "As long as you help me keep an eye out for those damn undead." I smiled at his response.

"How many times did the undead attack this place and where did they come from?"

The guard looked at me suspiciously and said, "What's that to you?"

"The head priest of the church of Thor asked me and my companion to investigate these events."

The man scratched his chin and said, "I see" with understanding.

He continued his sentence with, "The undead attack three times. This was the first town to be attacked and each time they came from the east when the set. The first time we were....caught off guard and half the townsfolk died that night. The following day the King sent reinforcement along with some priests and paladins. Back then there were at least 50 of them in total but as the attacks continued further and further away from the town most of them left to defend other places. Then the second attack occurred. This time we were prepared for the fight but at the same time wasn't"

The man had a sad look on his face.

"What happened in the second wave?" I asked wanting to know more about the circumstances.

The man sighed and said, "The undead that attacked us that night was the townsfolk that died that previous night. They were all buried and purified by the priests....but they still came back. I heard that the other towns attacked faced something similar as well....what evil could do this?"

"That's what I'm trying to find out."

The man looked at me and said with a small smile, "Thank you traveller."

I sighed this time and said, "Don't thank me. Thank my companion that forced me to do this. Anyway what about the third wave? I presume there was something different as well."

"Aye. Besides those who died in the previous wave, the ones from the first wave came back as well. I don't know what kind of dark magic could cause this but even the ancestors of this land were brought back as undead. Many of the remaining townsfolk said that they recognise some of them when they were children....other than the fact that they arrive at night away from the sun where they're strongest, I have not other information for you."

"Thank you. I hope for the best." I said bowing in thanks to the guard.

"I hope for the best for your investigation. I pray that the Gods guide you to this evil."

With that I left the guard alone to continue his duty.

[That's strange. This isn't like you to have...compassion]

Shut it llyfr! The best way to gather information is to make them believe that you sympathise with them. All I did was manipulate him a bit to give me what I want to know.

[You truly deserve to have my power. Hahahahahahahhahaha. You are exactly the kind of person the Gods hate!]

Really so I'm similar to you?

[Pretty much]

That's nice to know. Anyway we should meet up with Alexandra now and then question some of the residents of this town.

[Hopefully she gains some other important information from the paladins and priests]

I went over to where Alexandra was to see that she joined the paladins and priests along side with the remaining residents of this place in prayer. Should I disturb them?

[Don't else you may ruin any chance of getting information off of them]

But Alexandra still might.

[If they learn your her companion then they might give every last detail to her]

Right so I have to wait. I walked to one of the buildings nearby and leaned by back to it waiting for the group to finish praying.

A couple of minutes later....

"Hey Eden why are you slacking off?" said Alexandra rudely to me. I frowned and replied, "I finished on my end and waited for you and the others to finish with your submission." Alexandra smiled when most religious people would be insulted.

"So what did you find?" I asked.

"Well I believe you should've found out that purifying the dead doesn't prevent them from being revived as undead. I talked to a paladin and priest that was sent here after the first wave of undead attacked this town. According to them the bodies of those who were revived did not move."

"What does that mean?" I asked. Don't you usually need the bodies of the dead to make undead. Isn't that a basic concept of necromancy?

"Well the undead don't come from the cemetery but always from the same place. From the east. This either means the undead are disguised in some way using illusions or there's some artefact that makes the exact same undead while adding more in. This is frustrating you know."

Agreed. Either way its going to be a pain to clean up.

"Did you get information off from the villagers?" I asked.

"Nope. There's no need. Most of them are to frightened to talk about it. Lets head to the next place." replied Alexandra.

Town 2, Ledin....

"They came from the East! A whole lot of them! I never seen so many undead in my life!" said the very energetic young man. He was kinda annoying but to get information I have to endure...

"So were there some similarity between the attacks?" I asked hoping he gives me something important.

"Well besides the weird feeling that I know some of them, they gave a weird aura form their body when they go near light. Besides that the last 2 attacks were pretty much the same."

Yes! That's what I want to know, the small details are always the best! I quickly thanked the person for their time and went to Alexandra to report what I found out.

After I said what I needed Alexandra said, "That's interesting. The possibility that the undead are at least part illusion increases. I found out that the undead were much stronger after the first wave. Its like the necromancer making them is improving or doing some experiment."

Town 3, Mube....

I went over to a young girl not because I'm a pedo or anything...I need some information and everyone else was kinda useless in that aspect.

The girl looked at me and innocently said, "Do you need something lady?"

Ack! Lady...damn even children....

[Calm down! This was your fault in the first place you know]

Don't remind me llyfr. I have to ask this....girl a question....damn my consciousness is....

[Shit you have to stay awake! If you faint now.....damnit are you listening to me?!]

"Lady are you all right? Are you hurt?" asked the young girl. Man being pitied like that...tears came out of my eyes. Why? WHY? Why the fuck did I make my character look like a girl?!

After a few moments of being pitied I finally got my emotions back to normal. Alexandra must never find out of this.

"Eden what are you doing?"

Shit! Why now?!

"The lady over their was crying" said the young girl. In that moment I saw Alexandra's face turn into a evil smile.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Town 4, Yedi....

This place was the most run down place of all. It was attacked the most time after all with 5 waves of undead attacking this place. Because of this there are a large amounts of guards and paladins on standby just in case as the residents are moved to a safer place. The evacuation was half way done so we could still gather some information off the residents. Me and Alexandra split up again to do what we did in the previous 3 towns.

I went up to a guard and said, "May I ask you a question?"

The guard turned and looked at me and said, "Sure." He was blunt and he could have some crucial information I need.

"Have you noticed any kind of similarity or change in the undead in the attacks?"

"Hmm.....I believe many now know that the undead seem to be the same no matter what attack they come from and that they consist of our dead ancestors. One thing I noticed was that the undead seemed to have become stronger after the fourth wave. They looked the same to their strength and speed were significantly higher than before. The fifth wave was the same but to a lesser extent. Its as if the dark power that controls them was getting stronger."

Town 5, Medina.....with a time skip!

"Well I think that's all the information we can gather on these attacks." I said.

"I think so too. We should have enough information to track this necromancer down!" said Alexandra in enthusiasm. We were together with a couple of paladins on standby. They were nice enough to let us stay with them for the night since Alexandra convinced them...

The sun was setting and I had a very bad feeling about this again. Whenever the sun sets I feel an abnormal energy coming from somewhere. I questioned llyfr about this and he said it was most likely due to the power of the necromancer increasing.

"Hey llyfr were there any necromancers in that world of yours?" I asked letting Alexandra into the conversation as well. It seems Alexandra was interested as well.

[Hmm...there were necromancers. Several times they almost took over the world but were stopped by heroes]

"I see what was the worse undead attack?" I asked again. This could be interesting for me.

[Lets see...a necromancer did not lead that particular battle. A doom knight. An undead knight of great power invaded a certain town that was the base of the heroes. There were 19 million waves of undead in that war]

19 million?! Holy Shit! That's overkill!

"When you say 19 million waves you mean 19 million undead right?" said Alexandra hoping that llyfr made some sort of mistake.

[No it was definitely 19 million waves in total. Each wave was about 5 undead so there was about 83 million undead in total some were pretty big as well. You have to consider that the place that was attacked was the main hub for heroes around the world. There were at least several tens of thousands of heroes facing the undead]

"Will you tell us how the war went?" I asked. Man facing that many undead would be hell!

[Well everyone thought it would be the usual 4 million wave war. That's the standard]

So facing 20 million enemies was standard? I'll hate to live in that world.

[After defeating the 4 million waves one way or another the doom knight taunted the heroes and sent out the remainder of his army. This battle continued over a month but the heroes numerous in numbers and strengths eventually won. The doom knight himself came out to fight]

"So I guessing the heroes defeated him and won?" asked Alexandra. These kinds of stories usually end with the heroes defeating the enemy general and saving the world.

[Nope. Everyone lost. The doom knight spared the heroes to give them the despair of having no power when their towns, loved ones and the world was destroyed in front of them. The doom knights also collected the 8 elemental orbs before the battle and was preparing to absorb their power to become the ultimate being]

"Wait elemental orbs?" said Alexandra in confusion.

"Think of it was a orb that lets you dominate an element when you use it. I heard its very powerful" I said the Alexandra explaining how powerful and dangerous these orbs were.

[Anyway when the doom knight was about to absorb the power of the ultimate orb the 8 elemental orbs combined, his useless subordinate betrayed him and took the power for himself. He turned into a dragon and the heroes and the doom knight were forced to team up to take down this new dragon of darkness and eventually succeeded]

"So was that how the war ended?" I asked. This was getting kinda long.

[Not at all. The dragon of darkness was absorbed by the mastermind itself. The mastermind a powerful spirit of darkness needed a vessel to wield its mighty power in the world. It collected countless darkness spirits from the world and became even more powerful. The heroes fought it and the darkness spirits that attacked it but they were losing. The dragon of darkness even swallowed the sun to rid of all hope]

"Wait swallowed the sun? Just how powerful was this being?" I exclaimed in shock.

[Most likely the most powerful being that existed in the world at that time. Warlic exhausted himself during this battle by maintaining the barrier that protected the town from the darkness with the help of countless other mages and engineers and the heroes set off quickly to save as many as possible from the darkness. Eventually a solution was found with the help of Crysero to defeat the dragon of darkness. You must understand how powerful creatures of darkness are without light to support you. Be careful when facing the necromancer]

"Wait a minute THAT Crysero came up with a solution to this?!" I exclaimed again. Man things gets more shocking every second.

[Don't ask me what happened. I couldn't see anything after the darkness spread all over the world and I heard second handedly that Crysero and the most powerful Hero and his dragon used some power to defeat the Dragon of Darkness and the mastermind]

I see....so we may never know what will happen unless I ask Warlic and Crysero....

Hmm? What was that feeling? It felt like the weird energy was becoming bigger. Shit was there going to be an attack tonight?! Wait it is night!

"ALEXANDRA UNDEAD!"

Rubble Rubble Rubble Rubble Rubble Rubble Rubble Rubble

I ran to the edge of the town to see countless undead coming out of the ground to attack. Their eyes glowed a bright yellow despite being creatures of the night.
