Chapter 15 - The fourth phase

Warlic finally checked in. I wondered where he was and what he was doing. He looked exhausted but seemed fine other than that.

"So how did your training go. How many light balls can you create and control now?"

I'm surprised that he didn't spy on me like before. But that's my own opinion on him.

"I can create 4 balls and can control 3 at once."

Warlic seemed shocked but regained his calm expression again.

He asked, "Can you show me then."

So I did. I focused on create one light ball at a time and then tried to move them. My progress on moving the fourth once didn't go any further but 3 light balls flew around freely.

"Are you perhaps a genius or something? Doing this much in days is almost unheard of. It takes months if not years of practise to do this much."

Wow...it really takes that long to get to this stage. Now how long did he take....

"Warlic how long did it take you to do this?" I said putting up a grin of superiority.

"I could do this much to begin with. I took me...around a day to create around a hundred of them and manipulate them freely. I did this when I was 5 I think."

Well that killed my confidence. I was kinda depressed now.

"Well I'm different form most people anyway. Those who trained in the arcane ways take a while to make the first step or two. Don't worry. Your progressing faster than I expected."

Now my confidence went up a bit.

"Well, you passed the third phrase. Now the fourth phrase is a lot easier than the third."

"Why?"

"Because the third is used to test your limit. The fourth is simply learning spells to use. As you may realised yesterday, me and Crysero finished the adjustments on the monsters you'll face. Now you need an offensive spell to kill them."

YAY! FINALLY!

"But you need to learn the basic of magic combat."

….....fuck.

"I'll start now. Also you can continue with the third phrase as long as it doesn't distract you from my lecture."

"Wait I thought I had to focus to use the magic."

"Try making a light ball without think much."

Wait how does someone do that? Its not like a light ball can magically appear out of nowhere in my hand.....HOLY SHIT! It did appear. My god! How the fuck did I do that.

In my hand there was a single light ball floating around and not doing much.

"See. The training also served to help you cast spells without thinking too much. It won't help if you are trying to cast a spell and a goblin starts beating you to death mid way."

"True."

I rather not die in such a way.

"Now let my lecture start! First of all what do you know about the elements?"

This was kinda easy.

"Each elements have different properties and they each have individual strengths and weaknesses."

"Correct but did you know that if used in certain ways the weaknesses can be neglected and bypassed altogether?"

Yeah kind of...I suppose someone stronger can cast a bigger spell to counter another spell. Also a smaller spell may be the same strength as a large one but the smaler one will win.

"Yeah. An attack to a single point will be more powerful than an attack that reaches to a long range."

"Correct. But you haven't considered the actual strengths of the mages using the spells. Even if you throw a ice bolt to a fireball, it'll still melt completely if the ice is too weak or the fire is too strong."

"Yeah I know that."

This is an explanation of the simple stuff.

"Now what happens if you have a ice bolt that is so powerful that the fireball cannot stop it at all and cannot melt it."

"Umm...you dodge the attack?"

"Yeah but what if you manipulate your fireball to condense when the ice bolt is in it? What will happen next?"

"The ice spike will be affected in some way."

"How much will it be affected and why?"

"It depends on how much the fireball is condensed because it depends on umm.....the amount of fire blocking it." I answered. I wasn't too sure about this part.

"No! The reason why you condense it is to increase the heat. Fire is made from vibrations in the air. So the more vibrations the larger and hotter the fire. If you condense the amount of space the fire can spread, it'll increase the temperature in the space because the vibrations have nowhere to go. Ice on the other hand is the opposite. The air is frozen and the same vibrations cease to be."

I see....but what does this have to do with the elements.

"This shows that it doesn't matter what element you use if you know how to use it. But if you change the properties then it'll be affected by the other elements differently as well."

"So...will you get to the point?"

"Ah yes...There are 5 main elements of this world. Fire, wind, lightning, earth and water."

"What about ice?"

"That is the polar opposite of fire and they affect each other at the same rate as it is made of water and wind magic. Anyway the elements are strong against the other in the same order. Fire>Wind>Lightning>Earth>Water>Fire. There are a couple other elements made from the five main ones. Ice is combination of water and wind. Lava is made from fire and earth. There are also the elements of light and dark which are polar opposites and are unaffected by the other elements in terms of strengths and weaknesses."

"What about healing spells? Are they considered light element? And are curses considered dark element."

"Yes and no. They are part of the series but are not directly part of it. There are other factors as well such as life. Necromancy is a combination of dark elements and the life factor. Healing is a combination of light element and the life factor. Besides the life factor there is also the death factor, wild factor, berserk factor, dragon factor, demonic factor and so on..."

"So what are these factors?"

They seem more interesting then how some elements are stronger than others.

"There are twelve main ones that are commonly used. Each one is an opposite to another in a circle format."

Warlic drew a circle and wrote down the names of these factors.

- Life and Death

- Demonic and Divine

- Push and Pull

- Berserk and Dragon

- Bluff and Curse

- Create and Consume

"Most magic fall under the Create factor. Of course there's a lot more that don't and some that are a combination of others but these 12 are the most commonly seen and used, at least where I came from. Now lets continue..."
